This tools are amazing. My issue is I work on small lawnmower engines. And there are several different sizes of pistons. And it doesn't seem like you are anyone else have these tools in the smaller sizes.

You could probably have a local machine shop turn some out for you.

I just had to rebuild a few hinda engines. Piston size 2.95. I took a 3 inch pvc, a saw, and a hose clamp, made one of these ring compresses for basically free. I'm sure 4 inch pvc would also work for other size of pistons. Example: 4 inch pvc inside diameter is 3.99 ish, Chevy 350 piston diameter is 4.00

But the old type of method is much more variable, as you can use it on any type of engine. Of course, when you are only working on Mini engines, the new tool may be better - but if you have to deal with different engines the old method is much cheaper.

It's a good investment alongside a new set of A-Series pistons, as the rings are more than three times the price of the tool for a new set.

Do you have any advise on using the old style tool that should minimise the chance of braking rings?

Take your time and be very careful. It's easy to break rings with the old tool.
