I've been watching so many of your videos, and it's nice to have a break from you holding the camera! You're doing awesome and have so much to say that is very interesting, but sometimes can get a bit difficult to watch with all the movement and close perspective. Nice to see you in action! Keep up the great work ;)

The greens harvester seems a great piece of kit. I'm Definitely going to get one for our farm, the only negative I can see, is I wish it was a bit wider. I am thinking of trying to fix 2 together in width then mount them on an adjustable height lightweight frame on small bicycle wheels which would straddle the beds in the walkways. A similar if a bit cruder adhoc version of a commercial machine I have seen for harvesting watercress which uses a conveyor belt to load the greens up into a hopper and tote.

So now I feel like I need to ask....."How are the other farmers using it?"
@milkandhoneyfarms8658 жыл бұрын
Hey man, your channel has been so helpful! So I bought the greens harvester early this season, and used it for our first several harvests. It works pretty well for the first cutting, but using it seems to give a shitty second or third cutting - the blade nicks and mars some younger leaves, leading them to grow up deformed, or with janky edges. This ends up making my QC process take way longer on subsequent cuttings to try and get rid of the crap leaves. AND, I feel like I lose out on a lot of product - even when I utilize the 4 ways you've shown to use the harvester, it seems like a lot of leaves lay down. Is there any way to avoid having to re-harvest the next day? I've ended up reverting to just hand cutting. Also, could you go into more detail about your Salanova? You mentioned getting more than one cutting - I thought those babies were once-and-done. Do you use the greens harvester for Salanova too? Have you had any germination issues? Thanks so much for all your excellent knowledge - you really give us newer farmers a big boost of confidence!

This is a good question, but a big one. I will try to do a video on it because there are quite a few nuances here. In short, timing and cut height will help with reducing the appearance of the second cut. Also, take a plastic leaf rake and rake the bed after you cut. This will remove all of the leftover debris, which will give you a cleaner 2nd cut. I have a video on Salanova. I address that question in there.

Love the ingenuity but my back aches just watching you. Need to figure out a more ergonomic design for the harvester-- longer handle or on thin, adjustable wheels to roll it. Something!

I have a pretty bad back and this isa huge life saver for me. Sure, it could be better, but it's light years ahead of harvesting by hand.

Do you find that having the irrigation lines underneath allows you to use it like a guide? or does it cut to low and hinder the plants ability to cut and come again? Do you do different heights for different crops or is it the same for most?
@numbereight8868 жыл бұрын
I've always thought you need some sort of adjustable skids under the greens harvester so you get even height cut and you can run it along the surface more generally. But I haven't used the device...
@offgridcurtisstone8 жыл бұрын
The first model had them. They were a pain in the ass.
@numbereight8868 жыл бұрын
Urban Farmer Curtis Stone Ok, On a scaled up operation I'd envision concrete strips along the outside of the beds with a lot of attention paid to even height & levelling of the soil. Then harvesting could run along the strips (wheels) and you'd be able to get precise height cuts. Anyway, that would only be useful in things like 500 ft beds etc I'd say..

Hey Chris thanks for all the valuable information! Can you let everyone know where you get the attachment for the greens harvester? I can find the harvester but not the parts that attach to the drill.

such a badass tool.

This tool is very high on my tools list. Curtis, do you always rake out the remaining parts that fall down onto the bed? Plastic leaf rake maybe?

If you cut the top of the greens, do they produce leaves again? How many times can you harvest greens like that?

The greens harvester was a bit out of my price range so I tried a shop vac and a katana. Can't recommend it. The stitches alone cost me more than the harvester would have.
@offgridcurtisstone8 жыл бұрын
If you can't afford the greens harvester for $500, you'll have a hard time getting off the ground. You're going to need at least $5000 to start a farm.
