I'm a mother of growing kids and I bought this piece because I was tired of doing hems and darts by hand. I've had it for months, not even knowing how to thread it. Thanks to your tutorial I now know how to thread the machine and create a nice stitch! Thanks Peg!

Thank you for all of your videos. I've never held any type of sewing anything...but I did learn how to stitch on a mean button in 7th grade home eq! Now, 20+ years later, I got this little handy device due to all the seams & hems lately unraveling before a few washes to fix my "issues". You're right...it's not easy! However, you have shed a lot of light and I appreciate you giving your time to those of us that need help! Sew on! Thanks!! :-)

Thank you so much! The directions didn't say there would be that "little loop" when you get to the point where you have to tie it off. I was so confused as to what piece of the thread I was supposed to be working with- and what side of the fabric. Thanks to you I FINALLY figured out how to get the stitches to stay. I knew it was a user error but I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong!

I have been remiss in not posting a glowing comment about your handystitch tutorials. I got the handystitch in a shopgoodwill.com auction box. It was broken and the Handy Husband fixed it I am no seamstress & don't know how to use a sewing machine, but I am cheap, therefore I wanted to get some use out of my purchase. I started making crochet purses, and wanted to insert a liner so items didn't fall out of the stitches. Enter the handy stitch and your tutorials. I would have NEVER figured this out without your detailed well shot videos. The handystitch is the perfect tool for simple brief sewing like these liners--and sooooo much faster than hand stitching. Thanks so much!!!

Hi Peg, Thanks for the wonderful video series. I found one of these handy stitch machines when I was cleaning out my mom's possessions after she'd passed away. Held onto it very fondly even though I'd never stitched before in my life! After 7 years, I dug it out yesterday only to be completely lost as to how to use it! Followed a couple of other videos and the thread kept slipping out while stitching. After I'd watched yours, I realised I hadn't threaded it through the second guide under the needle arm. You've got a wonderful set of videos. I am going to try and hem my shower curtains now. :) Thanks from Germany. Anu

Same here. I believe I may have purchased mine from a yard sale. No manual. It was threaded I thought, but didn’t work. I changed the batteries and tried again. It worked, but didn’t sew. I messed with it. Ended up losing the spring for the top tension. Gave up. Next day I figured there should be something on KZbin. Yes there is. Gotta say, Peg...your voice is very soothing and very easy to listen to. The previous video, I couldn’t listen to the young lady. Her voice was like nails on a chalkboard. Lol. Anyway, your video helped me get this thing sewing. You talked in a precise, and intelligent way, that is easy understood. Like a good school teacher. Thanks so much. I was ready to pitch it.

Thanks so much for your videos Peg. I was cleaning out a drawer and found an old "handheld smart stitch." It didn't come with instructions and i had never got around to figuring it out. After watching your instructions it is stitching right along. A couple of things that i noticed that may help others; sometimes it will stop moving and just go up and down in one spot. I found that if i stop, then start again on the slowest speed it will start stitching properly and can go full speed again. My unit i can't pull the fabric at all or it will start skipping stitches, it has to advance on it's own. It's also important to pinch the fabric smooth as it goes under the 'foot' so that it doesn't catch. I used clothes pins since i had them hanging around and they are easy to take off as i go but i will probably pick up a box of straight pins.

What does that even mean?? :) Now that I know how to not unravel everything, I should be able to get pretty crafty. :) Thank you again!!!!

Hi Peg! Thanks for your most helpful videos on the "Handy Stitch". I've viewed a number of them and yours is by far the best and most descript. In some of the others, I was having trouble getting past some of the technical terms like, "thingy" and "wonky". :) I didn't see any mention of "tension setting". I'm guessing that's not an issue on the "Handy Stitch"? Like one of your other commenters, I was having trouble with the fabric pulling back through the foot with the needle. As well as bunching thread and puckering. So I was thinking it had to do with tension or needle size? I have no experience with machine sewing and for lack of understanding of the "Handy Stitch"; I bought a "LIL Sew and Sew #202". That was an even more exasperating experience, for all of the same reasons. I'm back to trying the "Handy Stitch", because of your instruction. And now thanks to you, I feel like I can make it work. :) Thanks so much, Ken

Peg, when I finish sewing I look on the side where the loops are and I discover parts, where I had sewed there, are no loops then the loops start again. How do I keep that from happening?
@PegBakerSlipcovers6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the stitches are skipping. Is your machine new? If so, the skipping could be due to a defect or incorrect threading. If your machine is used, it may just be broken somewhere. Let me know what you are dealing with. If convenient, send a photo of the stitches to me at littlebug903@yahoo.com. Thanks, Peg
@PegBakerSlipcovers11 жыл бұрын
Hi Haayylee, When you say the fabric is a mess underneath, it sounds like your describing the stitching on the bobbin side. If it is tangled and then breaks, it is probably because the tension needs adjusting. Another cause could be the bobbin being inserted backwards. Many times, the problem can be solved on your own. Give it a try and let me know what happens. Sincerely, Peg

Thank you! I've never sewn much and was going crazy trying to figure out how to end! The instructions told me nothing. Glad I watched this! One question, is it the same with a real sewing machine? I always worried that i would have to tie some kind of knot somewhere.

Thank you for writing. I'm happy to hear my little tutorials were helpful! The Handy Stitch is a chain stitch machine which uses only one thread, rather than the two thread sources on standard sewing machines. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm here for you. Peg

Hi Eva, I can understand your frustration! My demonstration is made using a crisp muslin fabric. Even though the fabric is smooth and relatively light weight, I still have to pull the fabric as I sew. I suggest you practice the steps in Part 4 again using a similar fabric to make sure your machine isn't defective. Please get back to me and let me know how things are going. Good Luck! Peg

Peg Baker yeah but half hour ago doesn't work anymore... I think I'ts something with the needle... because it makes the holes in the cloth but do not pass the thread... so sad. but thanks a lot to you

Dear Delfy LP, How frustrating! Your machine might be slightly different than the one in my tutorial (made 6 years ago), or you may have a defective machine. If your machine is new, I recommend getting a full refund. Please stay in touch: I'd love to hear how this turns out for you. Sincerely, Peg littlebugslipcovers.com

Hi Peg. I am very happy I found your tutorial. I just purchased this used, and have no idea how to sew! This seems quite easy! My question, is, can I use this handy stitch to sew larger fabrics, such as a quilt?

Hi Christopher, Thanks for writing and for your your kind comments. Should you change your mind about sewing, try using a standard machine. You may get the results you were hoping for. I'd love to hear about it. Sincerely, Peg

I love this video. I've got it did all you showed.i need to hem my work pants but I don't want to see the stitches .I will hem inside out. My question is will you be able to see the hem once I turn right side out.Thank you for all your help.

Dear Althea, Thank you for writing; I am happy to hear my little tutorials were helpful! You will find that stitches do show on both sides, however, you'll want the "chain" stitch on the wrong side since it is more apparent that the straight stitch side. It really helps to practice on a remnant. Let me know if this helps. Sincerely, Peg. www.littlebugslipcovers.com

Hi Karl, Thanks for writing. I don't the answer, but with any new material, it's best to practice on a small piece first. Please give it a try and let me know the results. Thanks again, Peg

I'm new to sewing in general. I can hand sew but that's it. I wanted to make a few zipper bag/pouches. Easy. Could you give me some tips or even do a tutorial on how to use the Handy Stitch sewing machine for this? This is the only "sewing machine" I have. Thanks and love your videos :)
@PegBakerSlipcovers10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, Having hand sewing skills is a plus; I congratulate you on that! I actually don't own the machine I demonstrated so I don't know if a zipper could be sewn with it. However, it's quite possible you could use it to sew the sides and bottom of the pouches. Check out this video on making a basic zippered pouch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWXIfn-Mp8uXjrs Do the zipper application by hand using a closely sewn running stitch or a reinforced stitch. Press as you sew. Please let me know how this works for you. If you'd like to share photos of your project, send them to my email address: littlebug903@yahoo.com. Thanks so much for writing! Peg

Hi Peg, I tried to use the handy stitch to shorten the length of my gym top which is made of a stretchy material consisting of polyester and spandex. It would not work. The material does not move under the clamp. Do you have any advice for this? Is there anyway to loosen the grip of the clamp ontop of the material to allow the sticher to travel along the fabric? Thanks for your help!

I can understand how frustrating this must be for you! The TV ads make sewing with the Handy Stitch look easy and simple, when indeed it is not. As for your machine, be sure to read the instructions included with your machine carefully. It may be different than the model that I used in the video. If you are unable to get it to work properly, consider returning it for a refund. Unfortunately, I do not represent the manufacturer nor do I benefit in any way from the tutorial. Please let me know how this works out. Sincerely, Peg

@PegBakerSlipcovers10 жыл бұрын
Myriam Diakhite Hi Myriam, A standard universal needed #14 (try Schmetz brand) should work. Install the needle with the flat side toward the front of the Handy Stitch. Let me know if this helps! Sincerely, Peg

Thanks for this video. I was ready to take this back because I couldn't figure out how to get the thread to stay
@PegBakerSlipcovers11 жыл бұрын
You're right about that: the instructions are sadly lacking. As for the needle: there is a screw that holds it in place. Look for something like a "Phillips Head" screw or it could be a hand screw head (they seem to be different on many models). Carefully unscrew it so that it doesn't fall out or get lost (there's no replacement parts). Remove the old needle and replace it, making sure the flat side of the needle is in the same direction as the original. Let me know how this works. Peg

Hi Kraedi, Thank you for writing. The knotting process is done correctly in the video. However, it's still can be problematic. One of the reasons I do not encourage the purchase of the Singer Handy Stitch is that these difficulties of threading, sewing and securing are not intuitive. Setting up the machine is very time-consuming and the stitching it produces has very limited applications. It's definitely NOT handy.
