I’ve tested a $6 handheld sewing machine here • Cheapest Sewing Machin... but it was complete trash. This one is still a cheap option and has many pros, but I have a couple important warnings for you.

I've had this exact machine for years and only used it twice because I was getting irritated with it. Mine didn't come with a bunch of bobbins or even thorough directions. Thank you so much for doing this review because you explained a lot of things I didnt even know. Now I can use it again instead of hand stitching all of my donated masks! 💯❤

I bought the same model branded for Sunbeam at the 99 cents store for 5 bucks today. I have been using the handy stitch for ten years. When you end your stitch, pull thread (about 3 inches) from the bobbin, then through the tension disks, then through the needle. It makes it much easier to have the extra thread at the end. Also I believe there is someone called The Seamster who gives a great youtube demonstration on how to tie off the knot. I wish he was around when I first learned!!! Any way,I really enjoy using it, especially when I travel and cannot bring my full sized machine. I have even made what I call 'in a pinch' masks with it.

I'll have to go check out that video...this handy-stitcher is so frustrating to try to use. I can't keep it going in a straight line and when I get to the end it pulls the stitches out. I'm thinking it's easier to do this by hand with a locking stitch and just take a month. Least there won't be holes in the walls...

My mother purchased this years ago when my son was 6 (he's 21 now) and he ripped his pants from the groin area to his rear end😑. I didn't sew (my mom & sister did), but she gave me her hand-held sewer by Singer. I was able to stitch-up my son's pants including another pair and I was happy with the results. The only downside to the hand-held was it's not left-hand friendly but, I made it work for me😊. Thank you for sharing and look forward to seeing more of your fabulous videos!

This is actually a helpful review. Thanks! I want to get something to help me sew, but I don't want anything fancy, since I don't make clothes, just little stuff for my guinea pigs like pillows and beds, so nothing super complicated. And man, sewing machines are expensive! I was worried that a handheld one like this wouldn't be able to handle felt or thicker materials, but if it can do that do denim, it's good enough for a guinea pig pillow!

Hello, nice review. I got my handheld machine, having never known about it before, from Goodwill as a used item & when I took it home to test out, the stitching was intermittent, iirc. It was missing stitches, not looping into itself consistently as a chainstitch. That might be why the machine got donated by its previous owner because it wasn't sewing correctly. I checked out some repairs on KZbin & there's a hook mechanism inside, where the needle goes in, that sometimes goes out of alignment. So I opened the case of the machine to get to it, found the hook/catch part & bent it a bit around. After doing some tests, I managed to get a consistent chainstitch, but it's still not right, as it's not looping into itself, so the thread will unravel off the cloth if you pull on it. Being that this was a used machine, I found that the needle it came with may not be the original needle, so now I will have to go to the store to try to find one. Apparently these portable machines needs a DHX1 (or 24x1) size #14 general purpose needle. These needles are shorter than the common ones for regular sewing machines. Anyway, I'm getting close to hopefully repairing it. I found that these machines are the same machine design seen around the world as different brands. Mine happens to be a Sunbeam brand, while the one you tested is a Liumy, even though they look physically exactly the same. They are cheap & the hook mechanism is not foolproof, which can get bent out of position, so hopefully I will get mine to fully work properly soon. I will also look for a voltage adapter for it (6 volts, 600-800 milliamps) & I might have one laying around somewhere already.

The little flat piece with the small wire protruding is for threading the needle. The one that came with mine is a threader. Yours does seem to have a hook. If it fits through the needle eye, it's also a threader. Otherwise, I don't know. Also, there is a small, metal hook/loop just behind the needle the thread also needs to go through. Happily, I've stumbled across several good machines over the years second-hand at thrift stores for less than $50. For some items that will not easily lay on a machine bed, I think this will be useful. My mom gave it to me years ago and only now, am I checking it out. Plan to use it in a car seat upholstery project. Quilting thread is stronger, but thin and will be my choice. Your choice of denim is helpful in showing its strength. Nice energy.

I just bought one of these tonight. I am very short so have to take the hem up on nearly every pair of trousers (pants - I'm in the UK) that I buy. I have a new pair that are narrow at the ankle and I doubt my big sewing machine will handle them where this little gadget will. Not only that, saves me getting out and setting up the big machine. When I was a child back in the 1960s I had a little sewing machine - still remember it was called a Vulcan. I learned to dressmake with that until I progressed to my mother's Singer treadle. The little Vulcan also used a chain stitch. It was also battery operated. I have happy memories of the Vulcan. I'm sure this JML machine (called Magic Stitch here in the UK) will come in useful.

I could not thread it for life of me. Mine did not come with any instructions. It took a second to thread with the "hook." I had the thread going the wrong way, too. The only thing now is tying it off after i am finished and keeping a straight line. I guess that is just confidence to pull it with more tension/getting used to it. Have to watch to the end later to figure out how to complete it after I am done so that it doesn't just ravel loose.

Thank you so much for this video. For me it’s a space thing. I’m already a creative with a whole lot of other tools that take up space. I wanted something I could use on the go or not being forced to sit in one place.

Really funny I bought this thing about a year ago because its cheap and have still not used it!! (Tells you just how often I sew! Lol) I have fixed stuff and sewed by hand thinking "I really should take out tgat handheld thing I bought" but I guess old habits die hard haha. BUT NOW, seeing its so EASY (had imagined a couple of hours to figure it out) I will DEFINETLY go look for it!! Thanks!! Xxx

I found one of those at the thrift store and I haven’t tried it yet. I’m scared. It’s brand new and has never been used. I’m pulling it out now. P.S. mine is a Singer sew quick. It has all the attachments but does not come with DC adapter but have a place for one. I tried and it works like a charm. I didn’t forget to lock it. Thanks for the motivation. By the way it cost $6.00 at Good Willie’s.

Hey 👋 the reason why it’s still going when you run it is because when you push up the plate you are not supposed to push down on the top part that’s why it is still running. Hope that helps

OK so this one does actually work but seriously, I would always advise anyone who asked me that you would be better of going for a second hand or basic machine that does more than just chain stitch.
@TheNancy5000

This is probably more for people who could use one where a machine might not work as easily. Or if you're traveling. Or if you're not ready for a normal machine. I'm glad it works. I always wondered.

@@TheNancy5000 Correctamundo!!! I'm looking at options to use on my 48' catamaran for simple repair work. I have a Sailrite heavy duty machine for sewing canvas but it's heavy, and it's a hassle to lift out of its home deep in one of the hulls just to fix a busted seam in my jocks. Great vid!

Just found you for the first time tonight. I laughed all through your presentation. Big quest Tion did you ever see any thing with this? I have fallen for picking these up twice then donating because I couldn't figure out how you would ever sew anything that wasn't miniature size. This opens like the size of a stapler. There wasn't room to move much of the item being sewed through that opening I love to see someone actually show some projects they were able to make or mend with this thing.

I LOVED this video Demo!!! You are so sweet and down to earth, easy to follow, and funny. I am trying to figure out how to use this and just came across your video. I watched the manufacturers video for my stitch machine ( It wasn’t great) but Then I found your video! Thank you. Your machine isn’t the exact brand I have. But it works the same. Except my hand sewing machine doesn’t have a lock as far as i I can tell. 😮 It has an on/off button and if you barely touch the power button by mistake it starts stitching. I’m so glad I found you on here. I will watch your other videos too. ❤
