@@eclipse_pvp-gamez5428 I teach my students how to use it that way. I also teach my students how to find the answer on the table or graph. I am not sure about the SAT, but in the ACT you only have 1 min to answer each question and most students take too long to come up with the equation and take too long to type it in the calculator.

It is a good idea to try a positive guess and a negative guess, but sometimes the equation will have two positive answers or two negative answers. If your calculator gives you "Err: iterations", it means that are no answers with the sign you've entered. Try a guess with the other sign to get your first answer. Then try another guess with that sign (either closer to zero or closer to (+/-) infinity) to get your second answer. For instance, if 1 was an answer, but there are no neg answers, the -1 will yield the iterations error. Then try .00001 (which is much closer to 0); if that still gives x=1, you have not yet found your second answer. In that case try 100000 (much closer to infinity), and you will get your 2nd answer. Using very large and very small 2nd guesses will eliminate too much guesswork.

I am so confused, but what if I get an equation that I have no idea what to guess? Maybe 1 answer is around 5 and the other is around 300?
@jesse5783 ай бұрын
well its a guess, you can realistically put any number. I just tried putting -1239014524 where the answer was .5 and it got the right answer in about 1s. Guessing is to slightly speed up the calculation time by having it start guessing possible x values close to your guessed value and then expanding from that point. It's useful since the processor isn't that great so it wants all the help it can get to be as fast as possible.

Thank you for the explanation: The solver is nsolve. That means, it usually stops at the first solution. To get another solution, you must get another range. The first guess was 1 and the solution was 0.721..., so the second guess I set to -1 and got -0.479. So the equation has 2 zero points. Another way is to graph the function to receive a hint for the solutions

for some reason scientific calculators are almost always better than graphing calculators when it comes to solving problems. many even have built in quadratic and polynomial function solvers. the only reasonably fast way to solve a function on a graphing calculator is to graph it out and see where the lines intersect.
