Also, the light tap on the stalk end brings up the next level of wiper settings on the screen (speeds and auto buttons) so you can manually adjust by one screen touch instead of two.

Got to say, this decluttering and putting more and more through the touchscreen is stupid. Don’t’ care if it looks sleak and minimalist its not what you need in a car. Yeah there are voice controls and activating wipers can be done in different ways with touch buttons for one swipe but the point is you want to be able to activate basic controls quickly without looking when driving, by feel if necessary. Voice control is slower,, touch screen is more distracting . With buttons and knobs you can quickly learn to use the controls with out looking away from the road, with touch screens that’s impossible. We will see more accidents in cars due to these issues. Stay safe everyone.
@oorcinus3 жыл бұрын
@SydneyEV It’s not “same for the touchscreen”. You can use a physical control by touch or using your perhipheral vision only. And your finger won’t slip off it while cornering or from a bump in the road. Touchscreen is the inferior solution, always was, always will be. It’s not there because it’s better for the driver, it’s there because it’s cheaper and simpler to manufacture.

What about that wipers and that back ?
@oorcinus3 жыл бұрын
They should’ve implemented the stalk tap so that one tap = auto wipers, two taps = manual speed 1, three = manual speed 2. There’s no need for a single wipe without wash, i don’t think i’ve ever used a single wipe without a wash in my life. This would allow almost complete control without looking at the screen.
@oorcinus3 жыл бұрын
@@SydneyEV My bad then, didn’t know people use single wipe that much. Here’s another idea - single tap for single wipe, like it is now, but then the left (volume) scroll wheel scrolls through the wiper settings on the screen for the next, say, 5 seconds. There’s very little chance you’ll be adjusting volume while messing with the wipers, so there’s no real tradeoff, and it saves you poking around the screen with your fingers.
@oorcinus3 жыл бұрын
@@SydneyEV Or that, yeah (although the new wheels reportedly slip more easily under the finger when keeping them depressed). In general, i feel like the wheels are underused - they’re locked into two sets of functions (media and cruise control / autopilot) except in a couple of special cases (mirrors, steering wheel), and have been like that since day one. They could be way more contextual and reduce the need to reach for the screen in a lot of the cases. Not just for wipers - why not make it so that you can “scroll” through lights options too when you push left stalk forward, for example? Pull - flash high beams. Push - open lighting menu. Long push - high beams on auto. I’m sure there’s a way the right wheel could be used to contextually operate the quick-access cards too, for example. Far less need to muck about with the screen, although you’d still need to glance at it. Now, i realize contextual controls increase cognitive load (that’s why they’re usually avoided on cars as much as possible) - but it’s still less cognitive load and hands-off-wheel-time than the current setup.
@oorcinus3 жыл бұрын
@@SydneyEV Hah! They did exactly that in the S Plaid! Took a look at the manual, and it works as i suggested in the last comment - after tapping or pressing the wiper button, the left wheel scrolls through the wiper speeds. Unfortunately, i doubt they’ll migrate that to 3, as wiper options show up on the instrument cluster display on the S/X.

I am a RainX fan - but the Model 3 wiper alternatives are fine. I'm didn't think of using the voice commands, or the double tap for auto. Good work!

Question?? Do your wipers go all the way to home position when you have them on? We just picked up our model3 and went for a drive in the rain. When the wipers are operational they tend to go to full home position and make a clunk sound every time, it’s quite annoying!! It would be better to go to bottom of windshield only, not full home?? Is this common?

And for our next trick, where can you go to buy replacement blades? I can get them from the service centre at Beard, but what about if I’m on the road and they’re not working properly? SuperCheap haven’t got a clue. Also one reason why they do weird things could be there’s wax or polish build up on the glass or the blades. Find some alcohol wipes. Wipe down the blades, and also any areas of the windscreen that give you grief, especially in front of the camera pod. Mine has been way less grief since I tried that.
@PCLoadLetter4 жыл бұрын
Alas I’m not an expert on wiper blades. My main concern is merely that nobody sells them. But since I cut down on using various laser wash car wash & waxes, and other automatic car wash & waxes, I’ve had less smear when it rains. Doesn’t help when you’re on the road all weekend and you know surprisingly little about keeping cars clean.
@PCLoadLetter4 жыл бұрын
If I was sufficiently motivated I’d go get a proper hydrophobic coating for the glass. It looks awful up close. But so long as it looks sweet from a distance, I’m not too fussed.

Peter Cook I have used RAINEX for well over 30 years I think, usually with a fresh application if there’s significant rain forecast. However, it does tend to make the Tesla wipers a bit inclined to judder or skip occasionally. If I am doing a long highway drive though, I’ll still apply it and just leave the wipers turned off as it’s really that good at higher speed.
@yggdrasil90394 жыл бұрын
As long as you can adjust the speed of intermittent wipe. On my Prius I have a dial around the wiper stalk so when it's set to intermittent I just adjust the dial to speed up or slow down the intermittency (length of intervals between wipes). I use this all the time when it's raining. Can you do this on a Tesla M3?

This is a good explanation of how the Tesla works, but I can't agree with letting tesla off the hook for such a terrible design. My wipers are almost never going at a useful speed. They are often not going at all in the rain, despite being set to auto. So I either have to look at the center console (which caused the other fellow's wreck, which you so cavalierly blame on him) or I have to pause, tell everyone in my car to stop talking, argue with the voice controls, and I have to do this EVERY TIME the rain changes. Of course this causes wrecks! Every other car has an easy to grasp stalk control that takes 1 second and doesn't require 3 passengers, including toddlers, to stop talking.
@vjhicks85333 жыл бұрын
But none of the options here are as fast as a simple knob/lever to adjust the speed. And when a surprise thunderstorm comes up what if you stumbled with your words with voice command? In the end the “reaction time” for all of these methods is slower than a tap of a lever or turn of a knob attached to the steering column. What Tesla has is fine for “predictable” rain. But I’ve driven in situations like being 100% clear and shiny to torrential downpour in seconds. And how does it handle a situation where a truck kicks up a huge puddle of water suddenly on a wet road right at you?
@FutureSystem7384 жыл бұрын
Great video Rob, however my question is: WAS he really playing with the wipers? My guess is that he was doing something else, and used that as an excuse. The guy absolutely deserved to lose his licence.
