Our recent experience with using the Trenitalia app is that for nonregional trains (with NO reserved seats) is that you have to check in using the app before you board to validate the e tickets, but for the high-speed trains (with reserved seating) there is no need to validate the e tickets before your trip since they can't be reused by someone.

It seems that the checkin was dropped, no longer had it in June 2024. Better than the Trenitalia app is the "trainline" phone app and site, it covers all the train providers, as well as inter-country travel. It is easy to pick less expensive, faster and, best times. If you have an assigned seat look for the active platform signs that show where the number of your car will stop and walk to the designated area. The train door may be closed, in that case press the green button to open it. Note that in many stations there can be multiple platforms with the same number, mostly 1, 2, 3, etc), they will have an additional suffix such as "EST" (East) or "OVEST" (West). Beware that Friday and Sunday afternoons as well as Monday mornings may be sold out early on trains with reserved seats such as the high speed trains.
