Of course the original sites offer these tickets for far less than scalpers like suggested. Book early to avoid scalper ticket sites
@Romewise

@@paulgerrard9227 I think of booking sites more like agencies. They do charge a small markup because they are providing a service, including, sometimes, making it easier to book and compare prices. But of course it's usually less expensive to book on the official sites.

One thing I'd like to mention is that at Roma Termini they do not show your train platform number until about 10 minutes before the train departure time. Being used to the train stations in Japan where it can take 10 minutes just to get to your train platform (the dreaded Shinjuku station!) I was freaking out the 1st time thinking I would miss my train. Luckily the platforms in Italy are not that far from the entrance gates. Wish I had known about that underground shopping shortcut in Florence!
@Romewise
@Romewise Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent point! I am very used to the fact that they don't announce the track until right before the train arrives in the station. But I can see where it would be stressful if you are used to a much more organized or at least more timely system like what you have experienced in Japan. Yes, here, at most train stations, you can make your way to the tracks area and then once the track is announced, you just have to get to that platform. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

Hi Elyssa, we took Trenitalia in July from Rome to Florence (third time we have done this now) and we booked very early in advance with train line so got a very good price for first class, really comfortable, plenty of leg room, a packed snack box and was very quiet. Negotiating both stations in Rome and Florence was so easy. Everyone should follow your advice for a smooth trip.

Sounds like you went about it perfectly! Glad you had such a smooth experience. This is why I like to plan my train travel in advance, so I can get just the kind of car service I want. Granted, between Rome and Florence, it's a short trip, but I'd still like to enjoy it! Thanks for your tips and for your kind support as always!

Thanks for making me "Rome sick"... good advice and I loved seeing these sights again. I agree about getting tickets on line ahead of time. Also, if you get them at the station find a manned booth. If you do use a ticket machine, ALWAYS be wary of "helpful locals", unfortunately they are likely to be scammers. This applies to getting bus and Metro tickets as well.

WOW! It has been a long time since I visited Florence! I think it might be 20 years ago now!!! Back in the day, there was a ticket counter where the ticket agents spoke several different languages. You had to look up and see where the "English" line was (I think they showed flags to demonstrate the various languages). EEEKS! Kiosks always befuddle me. I, myself, would probably arrive a few hours early and struggle with it all. This new system does intimidate me, BUT I would still go!!!! Thank you, Elyssa!
@Romewise
@Romewise Жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember having to buy tickets from the people in the booths - and they are still there, which is great. But the kiosks have made it even easier. I use the kiosks for things like regional trains. For anything where a fast-train is involved, like going to Florence, Naples, Venice, etc, or where a more complicated journey is involved, like getting to Cinque Terre, I love booking this calmly in advance, so I have time to research the different options. Glad you found the video helpful!

Hi Elyssa, Thanks for your channel. I just found out about it this past week. I have already watched quite a few videos of yours on this channel. It has been a while since we visited Rome - 2013 to be exact. I learned a lot about some of the hidden places in Rome after watching your videos this past week. Thanks to this video of yours about Italo. When I visited back in 2013, Italo had just got started and the only way to Florence from Rome was from the Tiburtina station nearby. Since I had ample time, I visited the exact spot where to board the train a day earlier so that there is no rush for our very early morning train to Florence. Based on your video I see that probably you may not have to go to Tiburnita for to take the train - straight from Termini. I will be referencing your videos for my future plans to Rome and Florence. It is very satisfying to see an American living in Rome and making videos in English for the wider audience - feels right at home.

Everyone stands waiting for the platform number then its off to the races to get on the train. Just stay hyper vigilant to discourage the pick pockets. The trains themselves are super fast. Scenery not bad either when not in a tunnel.

Elyssa, thank you. your video is the compressive How To train video i have found on YT. You very clearly explained things and made this worrier at ease for my first trip out of Termini to Florence in May. I am going with my slightly disabled mom (she would kill me if she know i called her that 😆) With her it is so much easier if I know where to go and what to do while traveling. You have given me confidence not just traveling in Italy but the rest of my train travel throughout Germany and France too. I enjoy your videos of Italy. I got back yesterday from a three-week travel there, and your videos gave me ideas. It is very possible to find places in Milan, Rome, Florence that have zero other people on the street. It depends a lot on your tolerance for anonymity and quiet, and your ability to walk away from crowds whatever the cost of missing a tourist attraction. I actually found the Trevi Fountain by accident while walking -wherever-, and quickly ditched the place. And I happened on the Spanish Steps from the top, quite be accident on a wonderful solitary walk. Thanks

@Romewise
@Romewise Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Going from Rome to Assisi is a little different as there is no non-stop fast-train option. All the trains to Assisi from Rome are regional trains. The journey takes a little over 2 hours. You can find some tickets that are non-stop, and more tickets that include one or more stops. So Italo is not an option for this, and you should look on Trenitalia (or Trainline). Or are you asking for a video about what to see and do in Assisi?

That church Santa Maria Novella is one of the most beautiful in Italy and you might as well start trip right! Also, beware, we bought a train from Tropea to Salerno. The train came and before first stop they checked our ticket and we were on the competitor train. He wanted a 200 euro fine each. We got off at first stop to buy ticket thru them and lady explained if we waited an hour the train we had already ticketed was coming. Moral: be careful which train cause they are not interchangeable.
@Romewise

I love Santa Maria Novella so much and it's a shame more people don't visit it. I think with a short visit to Florence, it would be easy to miss. But it's so full of masterpieces! I don't know if you can visit any time soon but right now as I write this to you, they are renovating Masaccio's "Holy Trinity" and for 1.50€ you can climb the scaffolding and get right up close to it! You can actually look at the holy trinity straight on (as opposed to looking up at it from the floor.) It is AMAZING!! Sorry to hear of your icky experience with getting on the wrong train! And how exactly to validate your online ticket if you travel by a regional train(the one that you can’t book seats and can’t choose the coach number)? You showed us at the 8:11 that there is a certain machine there but you introduced a physical tickets in it. So do I need to have my online train ticket priorly printed when I’m using the regional trains?

If you purchase a ticket with your smart device, you need to create a login and password, and they also encourage you to download their app. So if you need to validate your electronic ticket because it's a regional or Intercity train, you just use the app to do it.

One question: I need to go to the Piazzale Michalangelo as soon as I arrive to catch the sunset. My idea is to go to my Airbnb, leave my luggage and take a taxi. I would need to go back to the smn train station to take it there, right? Uber is very expensive 😢 Thanks again

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you found it helpful! First of all, if you want to catch the sunset, give yourself more time than you think. Remember that the "sunset time" is the time the sun is already below the horizon. You'll want to get there at least 20 minutes prior to sunset time to enjoy whatever clouds and colors there may be. If you are going to your AirB&B to check in, ask them to call a taxi for you. Or, you could walk, depending on where the AirB&B is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3SnpWp7nap_g5Y

Italian trains are great but it can be stressful at Rome as they often do not put which platform until a few minutes before it's leaving, leading to looking for it and joining a rush of passengers.
@Romewise
@Romewise 10 ай бұрын
You are so right! What we do is check to make sure the train is not delayed, and then around 10 minutes before departure time, we go ahead through security and make our way to the general platform area. Then from there we can monitor the boards for the track number.

Thanks for watching! I'm glad if my video reassured you. I also tend to suffer a bit from over-heating. In all the years I've taken these high-speed trains in Italy, I've never once felt uncomfortable due to the air temperature inside the car. March is a funny month and it can be really cold so if they need to, they will have the heat on but it won't be overwhelming.

Great video! My daughter and I are travelling from Rome Airport to Florence in August. We have not taken trains before. Do you suggest buying 1 ticket or purchasing separately as I believe we need to go to Rome to get the train to Florence. Definitely a bit nervous!
@Romewise
@Romewise 3 ай бұрын
I understand you are nervous but please try not to be. It is easier than you might think. If you want to take the train from Rome airport to Florence, then when you land at Fiumicino, go buy your ticket to Termini station. Once you arrive at Termini station, go to a kiosk and buy your Florence tickets. I don't suggest buying your Florence tickets in advance as you just never know if your flight might be delayed or if you might have to content with lost luggage. Since you really can't time it perfect, I suggest you simply get your tickets on the fly. In August you won't have any trouble finding tickets from Roma Termini to Florence. These trains run often throughout the day. Have a great visit!

Hello, I have having a hard time finding tickets from Cinque Terre to Venice. We go in April 2024 so it may be a bit early but I just want the fastest possible time to get there? Most are saying around 5-6 hours which is long but doable. I also see trains for Italo that say 2 hours but no details on it? Would that be true that it is so fast?
@Romewise
@Romewise Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching my video. First of all, while I understand wanting to plan ahead, I do think you are a bit too early for April 2024. I would look now at options that are closer, so you can at least get an idea of the itinerary and pricing. Then, keep checking for April 2024. I'd probably start looking for those tickets from January 2024 on. This is something of a complex journey, as Cinque terra is somewhat remote with limited transportation options. So the first thing you have to do is get to the main transport hub of Cinque Terre, La Spezia. From there, it looks to me like the best and fastest options involve going to Pisa, then Florence, then Venice. There are a FEW options that take you from Monterosso - Milan and then from Milan to Venice only with regional trains, but this combo is not offered that often and it's actually slower than the above options because it's done with regional (slower) trains. No matter what, the journey is going to be fairly well all day (5-7 hours.) I still suggest using Trainline to check the schedules and see all your options.

Hi..fabulous guide...just one query..I will be taking the trenitalia fast train from Roma termini to smn, Florence and from there take the regional train of the same company to pisa central. So do we have to get out through exit and then get in at smn? We have 1 HR time between the two trains. Thanks .
@Romewise
@Romewise 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! You don't need to leave the station to catch your regional train to Pisa. Make sure that the train leaves from SMN as Florence does have other smaller train stations. But if your Florence - Pisa train leaves from SMN, it will be from one of the tracks there. There is not much to do in the station itself but you can shop on the lower levels as I showed in my video, or stop for something to eat or drink.

Thanks for watching! You will see at minute 11:02 in the video that there is a pretty big opening for the escalator down, There are these entrances at about 4 different points in the station and they are easy to spot since the station is just not very big. The shopping gallery does not have a name per se, but it's evident once you head down as it's shop after shop, plus of course, a bunch of places to eat. To exit the way I did, once you come down the escalator, make a left and keep moving towards the left hand side. You will see signs all along the floor that tell you where you are going. The goal to get out where I did, whether with the stairs I showed you or the ramp, is to go towards the exit for the "Piazza dell'Unità Italiana". You will definitely see those signs along the floor and they are really easy to follow.

This was the video I was looking for! Most of my travels throughout Italy will be done with ItaliaRail, precisely because I preferred the price, sacrificing travel duration. In this video, I managed to see a bit of the places to leave large suitcases inside the carriage. This is a major concern of mine (not being able to see these locations from where I'll be seated). Are the places to leave large suitcases safe, in your opinion? Could you tell me what size of suitcase fits in the compartment above the seats on ItaliaRail trains? Thanks a lot for this video!
@Romewise
@Romewise 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed my video and found it helpful! Yes, we often leave our luggage in those luggage storage areas. I suggest having a luggage lock on it, just in case. But nothing has ever happened to us when we've left our luggage in those racks. The overhead area is also fairly large and can fit a normal or even slightly large sized suitcase. Sometimes it can be a matter of finding available space if the train is really full.

ItaliaRail does not run any train, it's an US-based agency. Why are Americans always obsessed with safety? Is that because of the big numbers of armed homeless people in US who are so desperate that they steal even used clothes? Anyway, Thieves can't jump off running trains whereas all stations are camera controlled: so the foreign minors forced to steal by their parents living in Eastern Europe target things that can be easily hidden and quickly sold. Not your underwear that, believe it or not, has no market outside the US.
@Romewise

I thought I'd answered you but it seems my response was not saved. Yes, the places to leave luggage are safe. We do it all the time. And the overhead space can usually fit a normal sized piece of luggage but then you might also find that space full if the train is really full.

Many people prefer an easy to use third party platform like ItaliaRail or Trainline because it groups all the options from both Trenitalia and Italo in one place. I think Americans are concerned about safety when they are not familiar with European (or other) travel. It may seem a bit scary if they don't know what to expect. @@darioa.5381

If you buy your ticket through a third party then you will be unable to change your seat unless you call company download the app, open an account and give them your booking info and then they will add your ticket to your account so you can update your ticket seating. I was just there it is very very very safe. They have private security and military police and regular police. I would also tell you to make sure to buy a flexible ticket you will thank me later. Also go for the business class with Italo. Buy your tickets early and bring food and drinks you get very little to nothing with business except a cup of soda and peanuts. Business is better than standard. Standard has everyone in it.

One thing that I found inconvenient when attempting to purchase tickets from the kiosks using a credit card is that they asked for a “pin” number. Credit Cards don’t have pin numbers; or do they? Because of this I had to go to the ticket counter and the clerk had to input all of our information and print the tickets. We needed 6 tickets and this took around 15 minutes.
@Romewise

Hmm that0s a shame - the kiosks ask for a pin if you insert a "bancomat" which is basically an ATM card, as opposed to a credit card. If you insert a credit card, it should not ask for a pin. It's unfortunate you had some difficulty with these machines but I'm glad you were able to resolve it.
