How to Use the Tri-Bead Roller™

It took me a while to make nearly perfect round beads. This bead roller is great but it is not perfect. I weigh my clay before I use the roller. The circle on the bead roller makes a 7/16th inch diameter bead. That's a fairly large bead. The weight for my clay is .840 on my scale. After rolling out the beads, I put them in the freezer for about 4 hours. This hardens them. I pull them out of the freezer, pop in to roller again and re-round the bead. I push a metal 2mm rod through the bead to create the hole for staining, and then hang em up for baking. The roller collects clay on it's surface and it was a booga boo to clean. I tried everything, hot water, soap, alcohol, cold water and detergent and they never worked. One day just by accident, I dropped a few drops of cooking oil on the surface and cleaned it off with a paper towel. It cleaned up real nice and it makes them slide a little better the next time I use it.

They are all the same size. This tool creates consistent 7/16 inch round, 5/16 x 5/8 inch oval and 1/2 inch bicone beads.

Hi Nancy. As you can see when Christi uses the needle tool in the video, using that tapered needle tool doesn't distort the created bead. There isn't much distortion if the hole is created gently as shown. Thanks!

You can also put them into the freezer. They will harden enough to be able to get the needle tool in without much distortion. Or you can drill it after you bake them .

Can you vary the bead size by the amount of clay? What is the largest bead size?

Great question, Lou. This particular tool makes consistently sized shapes. If there was less clay the shape wouldn't be as crisp or uniform. The sizes you can make in the Tri-Bead Roller are: 7/16 inch round, 5/16 x 5/8 inch oval and 1/2 inch bicone.

If it is the plug you lost from the tri-bead package, the inside diameter of the measuring plug is 9.8mm and the depth is 9.2mm. Hopefully that will help as well!

You don't need to seal polymer clay. If you add a coating after the clay is baked, you may want to also add a sealant to keep the after-baking coat on. But the beads themselves don't require it.

I just got mine. Nice, but.... It is made out of plastic that doesn't like polymer clay. This type of plastic gets eaten by polymer clay. Even if I clean it after every use, the surface will be mared and slowly will leave markings on the clay
