For tourist I might also add, that in Vienna ticket gets considerably cheaper for longer periods of time - 4ex a 24h costs as much as 3 one-way tickets. Therefore depending on your stay think about buying 24h, 48h, 72h or even weeklies. In the bigger stations you also have info points you can get information about the public transport system from and buy tickets - if you dont feel confortable with the mashine.

For sure! I just wanted to make a quick simple video for the folks who first arrive to Vienna and don't know how the system works at all. (That was me in 2010! I was so confused the first time I rode the Ubahn! One of my local friends had to introduce me to it that first time in Vienna. Once you stay somewhere longer, or live there for a time, you of course get to know more things about how the system works and what it has to offer.)
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 5 жыл бұрын
There are some caveats though: the weekly and monthly tickets are valid for a *calendar* week/month, so if you arrive e.g. on saturday do *not* buy a week ticket, as it will only be valid for two days. An interesting option might be the "8 day ticket" which comes as a strip of 8 separate validation fields (fold the paper at the lines before inserting it into the validator). The nice thing about this ticket: the fields can be validated independently. You don't have to use it on 8 consecutive days (if you stay in Vienna for e.g. 10 days but plan to do a couple of day trips to other cities you could just omit those days where you dont need public transport in Vienna). The ticket can also be used by more than one person simultaneously (just validate one strip for each person).
@squirrelwood8008
@squirrelwood8008 4 жыл бұрын
It is important to note that you need to validate the strips in ascending order starting from the strip labelled "1". If you start with the "8" you basically validate all 8 strips at once. You can do that if you have seven more people tagging along with you.

Regarding the direction of trains: some trains don't go the full length of the line (e.g. on the U1 some trains terminate at "Alaudagasse", on the U2 some at "Aspernstraße" and on the U6 some in "Alt Erlaa"; also trains might terminate early in case of a service interruption), but you don't really need to know all potential termini: there are signs on the platform entrances that list all stations, with an arrow pointing towards the correct platform. Another notice: the tickets are valid for *all* public transport within the city boundaries. I have seen tourists buy a new ticket when they change to bus/tram/train - this is *not* necessary.

@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 4 жыл бұрын
@@mariangelesvaldezezcurra6327 depends on the ticket :-) A single trip ticket is valid for a single trip (including changing lines) in one direction without interruption. They don't have a fixed duration, but the validator machines print location and date/time, so ticket inspectors will notice if you try to bend the rules :-) But there are also tickets for 24/48/72-hours (from validation), day/week/month passes (calendar-days/weeks/months), etc. Also there are tickets targeted at tourists which include rebates at museums etc. Another good option for tourists is the 8-day ticket which consists of 8 strips which can be validated individually, each valid for 1 person on 1 day (i.e. you can share the ticket and also use it on non-consecutive days). For more information just go to www.wienerlinien.at

The old doors with the mechanical lever are easier to open when you already pull the lever *before* the driver releases the doors (they open pneumatically, and the old door locks tend to jam up with pressure applied).

there are security personnel but they are not fix stationed they hop from station to station..there are incognito ticket controllers who randomly make ticket checks during the day you won´t notice them until they show their badge. Also all stations are video monitored... the inside of trains are video monitored as well..in a case of emergency police or ambulance depending which kind of emergency will be there in a couple of few minutes. Bigger stations where different U bahn lines are crossing have an info stand and have even an own police station..

@@JenTheSingingTraveler sorry if I've offended you. It's just that this reminds me of that famous Wonko the same quote: “It seemed to me,' said Wonko the Sane, 'that any civilization that had so far lost its head as to need to include a set of detailed instructions for use in a package of toothpicks, was no longer a civilization in which I could live and stay sane.”

1) You buy a ticket 2) get in 3) get out at your destination. It's actually not that hard.
