Merino wool base layer and socks (over 90% wool, 250 g/sq m or above). It's expensive yes but it's incredible. Thin and light, warm, breathable, has a good range of temperatures, keeps warm even when wet and it doesn't stink. I was very skeptical about the praises until I bought some and now I am a believer :)

I live in rural Bavaria and commute to work and home all year round on my Versys 650. This winter I had -6° a couple days and I highly recommend heated gloves together with the heated grips. I also wear a thick woollen balaclava because at those temperatures the Pinlock doesn't do much and I sometimes need to crack open the visor to defog. Mostly I just want to say don't be afraid of riding in sub zero temperatures - ride slower and senseably and even getting caught in the occasional snow storm is manageable.

What I learned in the last 35 years of driving in cold weather Canada 🇨🇦, I learned that layers help but only if you layer that is touching your body is not cotton that all that layering will make you sweat and get wet. No matter how tight your gear is cold air will get in. So polyester that does not retain sweat, is the best for first layer that is touching your body. The sweat goes threw it and to the outer layer. No matter how good your gear is, the first layer is most important to cold weather. Keep warm brothers !

Handlebar Mittens make the most comfort for winter. I have abnormal permanently cold hands and with heated grips, the thickest gloves and protectors is not enough even around 2-3° C.. With Mittens even -20° is not a problem. One more point to say from my experience - The biggest problem is not to over dress because you can get wet from sweat and then cold from that. Everything must be dry and worm as possible

Another great video Pavlin ! - I ride all year round and I agree with everything you say, especially with gear - I find it is better to have a waterproof and windproof shell then layers for warmth underneath, just because gear manufacturers make something it doesn't mean it is always the best solution ! - The best advice I was ever given about riding in bad weatherconditions was from a Police motorcyclist, he said 'If the conditions are bad don't expect to carry on as normal, you must do ABC (Accelerating, Braking, Cornering) VERY GENTLY if you want to keep your tyres on the tarmac' !!

I’ve been riding throughout the winter here in the UK, down to zero and slightly below for short trips. Heated grips are the best! And I completely agree with you about the gear. Especially the bit about the lining. All my gear is unlined, and I do fine with an extra jumper and some good underwear. In my boots I use falke ski boot socks, which are really thin and maintain a small air gap at the toe end of the boot - much better for keeping your toes warm than a thicker sock with no air gap. My weak point at the moment is the helmet, which was a terrible last minute buy - no pin lock, but it was summer when I bought it, and if I didn’t buy it, I wouldn’t have been allowed to do the cbt course, which is what we need to start riding here in the UK. Don’t worry - I’ve already watched your video on helmets!

If you know how to use a string and needle or maybe a sewing machine (actually very easy) I think you might be able to make something like this out of long socks. I feel like compression socks might be best suited for this. You won't be able to zip them to your jacket but since they're very tight they shouldn't slide around.

Many riders put their bikes away for the winter but now is the ideal time to practice those low speed riding skills on less-than-ideal road surfaces. You don't need to go far and you certainly shouldn't go fast but you do need to get out and practice on ice, snow, and flooded roads. Even if you stay in your neighbourhood or local area you will quickly learn what works and what doesn't. Good news! If you find you need to buy motorcycle clothing and accessories January and February are the best times to negotiate favourable prices from dealers because sales are low :-) If the temperature is below freezing and the road ahead looks wet assume it is ice. Patches of ice typically form under bridges or where trees and buildings cast a shadow on the road. Stopping at traffic lights can be particularly hazardous because stationary traffic melts ice/snow which then refreezes into a very slick surface. The skills you acquire riding through winter will serve you well when summer eventually comes along ;-)

For 25 years i did not own a car. I had an extra lighter bike for the winter. In the Netherlands we call that bike a " Pekelfiets ". Because it will rot away due to the salt on the road. Although we use all kinds of stuff to protect the bike as much as possible. I have no problem with the cold. I even loved it. Once had to drive at minus 28 degrees Celsius. Ok, i admit. Sometimes i felt miserable from the cold. But my experience was that it is much more dangerous to ride in winter. Not alone it can be much more slippy. You can adjust to that. But people in cars are much less aware of motorbikes on the road. You are less espected. So you need to ride much more on a defensive mode. And i used newspapers unders my clothing as an extra windbreaker. Somewhere at 1975 started to also ride the complete winter. For commuting to my job. 240 km'ters every day. It was awfull when i had to do overtime because then i needed to ride at somewhere around 21.00 or even later. Facing minus 20 degrees Celsius. A lot more snow back in those days. Somewhere around 1985 i bought my first electric. I still own the Gerbing jacket and trousers. It was so fucking heavy. But man, i was so happy with that i still remember. With my buddies who also were poor we experimented at thr beginning of 1980 with making our own electrical heated gear. We used the wiring of an old electrical heated underblanket and sewed into a shirt. Damn, the second time i used it it got almost on fire. Had a beautifull zigzag pattern burned into my skin. On the highway it took me a minute to stop alongside the road and getting it of. 🙈 The fuse did not do its job.😁 Nowadays we have come such a long way with electric heated clothing. Even with bluetooth so you can adjust every piece seperatly. I wished i had that back then. Winters were far more worse then today. Snow and strong winds. I wish the climate change was the other way around. That it would get colder instead of hotter. If someone gets into winterriding more for whatever reason then they have to protect themselfs as good as possible. Your reaction gets much slower while at the same time it really is more dangerous cause cars will not espect you being on the road. Also make adjustments to your lighting. So you have a much better view on a cold and dark winter evening. And cars can see you much better. Hold much more space between cars. Do not keep riding just in front of a truck but make morr speed to be atleast 150 meter in front of it. You really need to adapt to a much more defensive and also a preventive style of riding. And although it is freezing you can really enjoy it when you have a clear blue sky. Also when starting to ride and you feel that somewhere your clothing has a weak spot. Stop somewhere and fix that as soon as possible. Do not keep on riding without fixing it. It is almost impossible to warm up again while riding. And you have to maintain the speeds of the other traffic.
