Thanks, for getting m,e out of a jam. Dangling atop a 10 ft ladder trying one handed to get a piece of metal roofing cut off with right handed tin snips. Wasn't working. I was making relief cuts, but at angles. Your instruction to make the relief cuts parallel saved me.

Bless you for making this. I'd be butchering a lot of sheet metal and probably bleeding a lot in the process of learning what you just taught me in a few minutes. Whatever effort it took, please know it's appreciated.

That is correct Jon, they are made with a "land" on them. The point I was trying to make is not to lean them past that land on the snips or otherwise you end up with rounded edges. Thank you for your input and clarifying my miss communication.

I just started in the HVAC trade and was having issues with which way to hold the snips. I constantly over-think it and confused myself. So I stumbled across this here video and actually learned a lot more than I came for! Not cutting all the way down, proper use of green snips, the waste edge. I should really take more time to actually learn my tools. Thanks, sheet metal kid :D You've just earned yourself a subscriber! (And maybe more after I tell my class about this)

I have a question. I'm new to sheet metal working and metalsmithing in general. I want to make a gong from scratch. It would be out of 18 guage nickel silver sheet metal. Its 0.04" thick. I found a distributor who sells nickel silver up in up to 24" wide sheets, they don't cut shapes and I'd need it to be a circle (preferably a 24" circle). Several tin snips on Home Depot state to rated at 18 guage steel sheet, do you think i should be fine cutting the silver nickel? If I'm just cutting a circle, do you recommend one the red or green? Or both? I'm righty.

That was probably 24 and its a task but i can cut through 20 and 18 gauge if its a straight thin line

I appreciate you posting this, but according to a Wiss training video I saw they ARE supposed to be used on an angle. Keeping the blades straight up-and-down is not correct. There is a flat part of the blade that should lay parallel to the metal. In my experience they cut much better by following that tip. (Personally I prefer the Milwaukee snips, and it's true there as well.) Of course going any further than that flat part, or even slightly past vertical in the wrong direction is an issue.
