Definitely this. This is true for other forms of collecting and/or hoarding too. For me, it's worry about ruining my stuff through accidents or inattention, or for stickers, finding something to stick them to that's worthwhile. My little generator is so plastered in stickers because I know I plan to keep it for a long time, heheh. I live an annoyingly fast-paced, active, rough-and-tumble life, and I know it's only a matter of time before I drop my Twsbi Eco, spill on my Jibun Techo, or get my Doughnut Macaroon rained and sweated on. I've already gotten my Maruman Mnemosyne 196 rained on when I left it in my bike bags!

Also just throwing this out there, that scrapbooking, journaling, and sketchbooks don't have to look neat, and you can follow all this advice very messily in ways that can still look good. In my case, the reason why I have so many unused stationery, is because my country has this thing about giving free stationery for students every year, most of them I don't use because I already have better ones, so it just keeps accumulating... 1) Make note cards with paper, washi, stamps and stickers. Larger paper sheets can be made into envelopes for the cards. Use or package with a pen as gifts. 2) I have baskets or other small containers throughout house with pens, sticky pads or note pads and scissors so that I can jot things down wherever I am. 3) Keep a notebook and pen in your travel bag for recording trip experiences, and same in car glove compartment. 4) I make mini art kits with sketchbook or heavier weight paper note books (or cut larger paper into 4x5” pieces and use binder clip), pens, colored pencils, eraser, markers and put in a small pouch. Great to toss in bag for travel or when waiting (like for medical appointments, etc) 5) for partially used notebooks or paper pads, cut unused sheets out of note book, then trim down to index card size pieces to use as scrap paper or shopping lists. 6) when my kids were in school I would write love notes and tuck in their lunch boxes 7) use sticky notes torn into strips as book marks 8) make a recipe notebook - my mom did this when she went back to work and I would prepare dinner from her instructions, these notebooks are treasured heirlooms!

Some great ideas. I'd like to add, if you have kids or grandkids (old or young), write out a book with memories etc from your life or from when you were young, they don't even have to be special things. Just say one day a song reminds you of something that you did...a trip to the seaside, your first time at a night club, your first boy/girlfriend, how you met your best friend, etc. You can tie in things you've learned through your life, silly little things or important things, favourite food/drink/places, etc. But also you can have an important section for health things in the family too. We take for granted that we will be arounds to be able to pass things on, none of us like to consider out own mortality until something happens that forces us too. Or we assume that it's just things your kids/grandkids will never be interested in, but you never know what will bring you closer. Sadly, we never know when you might not be able to pass on that information: my grandmother died when I was still too young to be curious about things like her life during the war, or as a nurse; my mum had a health incident in her 50s and lost so much of her memories from when she was young, it was like someone just went in and plucked this and that out (she can't remember who gave her away at her wedding and anyone else who would have known has passed, my dad including), lots of information I was hoping she would fill me in on of family stuff and her life; and, now I have a friend diagnosed with cancer who has younger kids, afraid she won't be around to see them grow up.

If the reason you don't use stationery is to "save it for important things" or think you'll waste things otherwise. My suggestion would be to decide to keep the notebooks after using them. Put it in an attic or something, so you know you can always go back and look at that beautiful washi tape that's no longer in circulation. Also having designated roles for pen and paper will take off some of the hesitation. Like A book and X pen for quotebook or to do list book or thought journal etc.

I ended up putting all of my old planner pages that were discbound into a binder in page protectors and in chronological order so that I can look through them whenever and reuse what's able to be reused, like the discs or covers. I put all the blank pages I didn't use together so I can use them as I find uses for them, and I saved my favorite month dividers so I have the artwork available to me to reuse as well :)

Several years ago, while I was grocery shopping, I saw a yellow sticky note on a box of hot cocoa. It read, "If you're feeling stressed, just remember to breathe." Very simple, but I had been going through a rough time during that period of my life, so the timing was kismet. I took a picture of the note with my phone, and left it there on the hot cocoa box for someone else to find. Speaking of LFLs...apparently people get upset if you take an armful of books, especially if you don't put any in to replace them. I'm sorry, where does it say you can only take one, single, solitary book? Where does it say you have to take and replace at the same time? I've taken plenty and I've given plenty, almost never at the same time. But apparently I'm "greedy" for taking a bunch at once without simultaneously replacing them. So many people are so quick to jump to conclusions...

Drawing and doing note taking with pens is a good way to use them up. Covering mistakes with notes is cute. 5-6. Dream journaling (or any journaling: sketch a day, gratitude, bullet journal, quotes or scriptures) you can hang them too 7. Write notes for others. When I worked, now retired, I would put ‘girlie’ or other distinctive Washi tape on my pens and pencils or the bound edge of glue bound notepads. I did this to discourage co-workers and customers from helping themselves to my things. If things did go missing they were much easier to identify. Worked great on my personal stapler. A co-worker from my end of the building saw another co-work from the other end of the building with my stapler. He told her to put it back. I use Washi tape to hold sticky notes and paint sample cards that I use as labels on end of shoeboxes that I keep my extensive paperback book collection in. I can write the author or the genre of the box contents on the label for easy identification. I keep a disc bound notebook to keep track of books. I dedicate a page or two to each author and write the book titles in order of publication or story timeline. I then mark each title with the format for each book as I read them Eg: paperback, hardcover, e-book (Nook, Kindle etc) or was it a library book that I read. I even give it a rating. Was it a good, okay or bad storyline and do I want to re-read it or did I donate it. Then when I go to the bookstore I put a reusable paper tag or one made from Washi tape on the page that has a title that I want to look for in the store.

I’ve just started journaling properly and it’s been 11 days. I prefer writing one whole page per day of what happened word to word. I write a whole page as I like to write my problems happiness in paragraphs. It really helps a lot! Previously before started my current journal/blog I used to do scrap journaling at the very start for a few days n then I gave up I just thought it was a waste of my paper but everyone has their own opinions but this was mine! I tried bullet journaling but that seemed very excessive to me as I had to do a lot of work n I didn’t have the time to fill out everything everyday, so once I just stopped journaling for months. I started watching your videos of journaling tips n it encouraged me to journal but in a minimalist way n I tell you your videos have encouraged me so much that now my mom keeps telling my relatives that I spend some time of my day writing in my blog n everyone is proud! It’s like meditation but with a book n a pen. By the way your voice is very calming like heaven! ✨Love your videos!✨

I love the Kanban board idea a lot. I especially like the idea of the DONE column, where the notes moved there would be a nice visual of an accomplished task. But then I tried to make one and was reminded why I almost never touch the washi tape, it just doesn't stick well to much of anything. Sure, it's not bad in a journal, because when the book is closed the tape is kept in place... but on a wall, or on a paper on the wall, it pulls away as if gravity is increasing on it. Even many decorative sticky notes lack staying power. Back to using them for bookmarks. Sigh, so now it'll have to be in a journal.

I think you can do it without the washi tape border - just put up the post it notes by themselves! I put mine on a mini whiteboard

Are you familiar w/the sheets & rolls of vinyls that craft stores sell? It’s made to be cut in die-cutting machines, but you also can cut strips of it by hand or w/a paper cutter, & adhere it to a surface. I made an “in-out” board using vinyl on a ~12 x 12” witeboard.

This exact thing has happened to me with both ideas so now I use a large notebook for some Kanban style needs. My boards are still traditional with pins and magnets but now I’m thinking I can use a sheet of paper with a washi frame and that can go in the board. Loosing a fallen sticky note from an important board is something I don’t want to experience again. Or loosing time trying to tape those long lines of washi straight.

Pen-paling is also a great way to use up your stationary. Sending memo samples and stickers to my pen pals is my way of lending my stationary to friends. Obviously for this to work you have to have a penpal, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find one. It’s nice exchanging letters and decorating the letter and envelope. It’s really fun, you just need time. ❤

Loved the advice! Especially the kanban. I actually use up my pens and have a going rotation because I'm a teacher. When I check my student's HW & notebooks, I usually try to use fun ink 💮. But, I still have so many notebooks, sticky notes, and washi tape lying around! I think I may start a rental system at my school, since my students sometimes forget their notebook or writing utensils. Also, for using washi tape and sticky notes, sometimes when I feel like something is too precious to use, I remind myself "You bought this to use, not to take space in a drawer." and that usually motivates me to part ways with it 😄

Ever since I was in grade school I would have to have a bag/case full of pens (all types and colors), markers (all colors and thin and broad lines). Calligraphy instructions and pens. Notebooks, sketch pads, rulers, erasers, pencils. 45 years later I still have to have all that and a kindle, light, readers.

Love the ideas in this video, especially the storyboarding idea --- I will have to try that one! :) Here are a few things I do when my stationary collection starts to outgrow its confines or reasonable uses: 1. Donate extra pens and pencils to my local library or school drive for students in need. I'm sure there are other local businesses, like soup kitchens or animal shelters, that also would be happy to accept stationary too. 2. Pick one pen, one pencil, and one or two highlighters and use them until they are completely used up. I've found this helps lessen the number of "half-used up" pens or highlighters in my pencil case, while also letting me discover and focus more on the refillable pens that I enjoy using. Eventually, I hope to reduce my collection to just my easily refillable pens (like my Pentel Energels and Tradios) and a handful of pencils. :) 3. Made a book review notebook. The way I use mine is this: Write down name, author, and a thumbs up, 'eh'-symbol, or thumbs down (you could definitely color code with highlighers, stickers, and washi tape too!), then write a short summary/review of your thoughts about the book. This layout could work for tv shows and movies too.

I've seen this kind of thing before, but yours is especially good!! And your con-board gave me an idea for another way to use up sticky notes. I was just working on my 3 month goals and projects list for the summer and I erased and re-wrote a lot. If I had used any of the hundreds of sticky notes I have around, I could have made the process easier and neater and prettier by covering mistakes or drafting the ideas on sticky notes before writing up the final list. Gonna re-watch this a couple times I think. THANKS!!!

I got a sticker book (the kind you fill with stickers that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s, from a Japanese subscription box a couple of years ago. I never got one as a kid (so many of my childhood stickers ended up on my bedroom door, lol). I like being able to keep favorite stickers and small bits of washi tape in the sticker book and then use the rest for crafts, letters, etc. Of course I still end up getting more stickers before I use them up but that’s another story, haha. I do wish that blank sticker books would be easier to find again. I do create collages in sketchbooks as well. Also, the Scotch brand wall tape is good for hanging up light items on a wall without ruining the wall. I use this tape for some holiday/seasonal decorations as well as adding small paper decor to my doll rooms.

Giveaways are how I cull my collection. I choose what I want to pass along, wrap them collage-style with tape, sticky notes, stickers and markers (including the mailing boxes and envelopes), include homemade cards and mail/hand them off. These surprise packages are fun to do and well-received. I've made quite a few new stationery fiends with my giveaways. More customers for you, JetPens! The several college kids in my life get enough goodies to share with their friends. They do so much digitally, I didn't think they'd get excited about analog stationery care packages, but they love them.

I prefer the think of my predominantly vintage fountain pens as a collection instead of the hoard of reality. And I delusionally tell myself my growing number of bottles of ink (45 and counting) I can use in my lifetime. Vintage pens mostly because I love my vintage Esterbrook pens, and am working on an example of each model and color of Esterbrook from the standard 6 colors and 3 models of the "Dollar" through the CH. The only way I'd reduce the number I have would be if I sold some. Inks? Hmmm... I'm trying to see what modern counterparts there are to vintage inks. I discovered that, if you stop focusing on chasing the latest fad, even then it can be difficult to find a modern ink that plays nice with the variety of paper vintage inks worked well with. And special properties like super saturated, shimmer, chromashading? Not important to those I write with, in most cases, so standard inks for me.😉 Though I currently have enough royal blue ink to float an aircraft carrier because it was the easiest to get examples from most companies in vintage. Have yet to find one that is perfectly behaved with the super cheap quality school paper (generally better behaved writing on Charmin than Mead, in my experience😂) but still readable. Notebooks, journals? I have a couple that get used regularly. Not for journaling, but things I want to remember (my memory is like swiss cheese wrapped in Teflon. Full of holes, and nothing sticks to it.) And I keep enough paper for letters and greeting cards to tide me over until I need to get more. And generally enough stamps to last 2 months. (2 books. I write about 20 letters or cards a month on average.)
