Great video. Would love to see you use upward comp w/ pro mb & C1 specifically on a rap style vocal. Plenty of vids showing this with mv2 but don’t love how it sounds on my vox & also not a huge fan of how parl comp sounds on my voice either so curious how pro mb or C1 could be used to bring up quiet aspects of a vocal 🙏🏼

When you were talking about when NOT to use upward compression, I was thinking about drums. If you have some light hits between the main kick & snare, you wouldn't want to push those low hits up. Anyway, great video! I love watching videos like this, to see how others may differ from the way I do things. It could be helpful to learn something new.

You’re definitely right! It’s still compression at the end of the day, so using it sparingly (or not at all) on things you want to be dynamic (like drums) is a prudent move. 👊🏼 Thank you for watching !!

Is upward compression and expanding (using expanders), the same thing?

similar but different

If you didn't get an answer to this already - no they are opposite. An upwards compressor reduces dynamic range by bringing the level of a signal below a threshold closer to it, and an expander pushes signals above/below a threshold away from it, therefor increasing dynamic range.
