How to Use VLR to Remove Heat Transfer Vinyl from Shirts

Have you ever created a shirt with heat transfer vinyl that you then needed to remove? VLR makes it simple to remove heat transfer vinyl, also known as iron on vinyl and HTV. Maybe you created it for a one time event or you made a mistake on something.
Do you have VLR in your craft room or in your Amazon shopping cart but afraid to get started. Let me show you how to use it.
What is it? VLR is a product on Amazon from AlbaChem. It’s full name is Heat Transfer Vinyl Letter Remover. It works on a variety of different types of vinyl. We’ll walk through two shirts taking off Cricut brand Everyday Iron On, Siser Easyweed and metallic vinyls, including layers.
-Safety
There is some odor but not overpowering. It doesn’t require any protective equipment.
It removes the vinyl and the residue. It doesn’t require any other specialty tools. I used the VLR and a rag. You will need a way to open the bottle. I think using a flathead screwdriver and a needle will be the best option.
Parts of the process are sped up so you get the process without the time commitment.
I am excited to have the VLR to use on other projects as well. It will allow me to create one time shirts without wasting the shirt.

Does this remove the vinyl letters and the discoloration from the adhesive underneath? I have an article of clothing where some of the vinyl letters have peeled off and I want to remove all of them but the areas where the vinyl has peeled off are discolored.

Thanks for watching! It does a sufficient job depending on the vinyl and the clothing. Most of the time, it is all removed. Some vinyl on light colored fabric stains the fabric. You will probably need to use a cloth to rub VLR directly on the adhesive.

The big question is right after it mostly dry... that water stain or slight discoloration compared to the original fabric. What’s the best way to get the discoloration /water marks to go away? A quick rinse cycle in washer or?

That's a great question Brandon. I'm not sure. What color and type of material is your blank?

@@HanksMakerMentor it’s a thicker black poly cotton blend and we’re looking n the middle of rinsing / washing without drying a few times to try and dilute or wash away the stain makes from the solvent. I’ve had it happen in smaller doses before and was a able to hand rinse it away by doing multiple layers of water on a hat. This seems more tedious though. They’re claim that it won’t leave any residue marks is bogus, though.

I'm sorry it is making it so difficult to remove those marks. VLR does not do a perfect job. I haven't used it enough to see a pattern on when and why it happens. Can you put a larger design to cover the marks?

Any use of chemicals needs to be an informed decision by an individual. What is fine for me might not work for someone else. I looked at the Material Safety Data for VLR. Skin is probably less of concern and might need medical attention. It can cause 'serious eye irritation' and you need to receive medical attention.
