In the end, the reason why I couldn't sing a whole song without simply ROASTING my throat was the placement. I was placing the grit below my larynx. Chris I have to say this video has nothing short of changed my life. I’ve been struggling to sing with compression and breath support consistently for years. I could never tell if what I was doing was compression or twang or something else. My head voice was too breathy or loud, mix too loud and lacking resonance, falsetto hit and miss, distortion was a pipe dream. Never could pin point what the problem was. Soon as I watched this and went through the exercises something clicked and instantly things have fallen into place. I have so much more control now. I can sing soft. I can sing loud. I can even sing with rasp!! (Ask my wife she’ll tell you how much I have wanted that last one). Sorry for the long post mate but honestly I’m so grateful. Alex Yodson Hey, there are many options depending on how you want to set up a home studio. You can look on eBay for fire retardant acoustic/studio foam as it is cheaper then most places. For around $50-$70 There are also videos that you can see to make patterns on your wall with the foam meaning set up depending on if your doing vocals/guitar/percussion. And go to guitar center or the like and look for a recording kit. Usually around $100 or so for a decent set up. Once you progress you can upgrade to better gear. Hope this helps.

@vladkuznet12 жыл бұрын
This is great as it's like you stretch with CT muscle first (sounds airy, high and weak), then activate the TA muscle which is when you hear the grit and meaty sound. Adding volume or activating support even more to stay engaged with TA muscle. The trick is to develop and master that activation of TA when CT stretches it. Many times people have one or the other but hard to develop coordination of both.

@@chrisliepe I'm at 12:26 in the vid and I'm gonna have to go to bed and resume tomorrow, but this is VERY exciting that you are a vocal coach on KZbin who is actually really teaching us how to make distortion/grit instead of making a clickbait title where they demonstrate it and then refer us to their program. Honestly, just the anticipation of the thought that you are going to actually show me how to make grit for FREE, out of the kindness of your heart and desire to help people, makes me want to PayPal you $50+ and I'm not even 100% sure yet that I will know how to do the grit after I am able to watch the rest of the video.... but even just the IDEA that you care enough to show us how to really do this makes me want to throw money at you in appreciation. And I'm unemployed right now!!! I don't expect anyone to believe this, but I can sing just like Steve Perry and Michael Jackson and Jason Mraz and I can even do an imitation of Smokey Robinson by making my larynx super high and using it (instead of air modulation) for vibrato. I can sing like Layne Staley of Alice IN Chains BUT I CANNOT MAKE ANY GRIT/Distortion!!! So this video is EPIC!!! Thank you so much, Cris! I cannot wait to resume it tomorrow evening! Regarding clearing the scratchiness (prior to your video about it being posted), perhaps Roger Love's technique would be helpful for DTuned? Talk like Yogi Bear saying "Hey hey, boo boo!" with your Larynx super super low. (Look it up if you aren't old enough to know what Yogi Bear sounds like). I ASSume that lowering the larynx like this is probably stretching the vocal chords out kind of like stretching a tight tendon, but I have not idea what I am talking about and am probably wrong! :) I'm really concerned about damaging my voice, so I'm wondering why does DTuned have a scratchy voice from doing these exercises that are supposed to involve no pain or fatigue? Hey, why do Chris Cornell (RIP) and Richie Kotzen (and the singer from the band Big Wreck to a lesser degree) all sound so similar? Are they using the same technique to make their grit? Like, maybe the technique they use to make grit is to constrict and close up the back of their throat (like above the base of the tongue) and so they sound almost the same as each other? I'm also suspecting that this is how Steven Tyler of Aerosmith does that scratchy "Ya ya yow" thing that he does because it sounds really constricted to me. And Angus Young of AC/DC sounds even more constricted. In fact, I can almost get his sound. Maybe this could be a video if you think it is worthy? "Distortion: Why Chris Cornell and Richie Kotzen sound the SAME" :) Thanks for being awesome and giving us this gold, man. It's amazing and greatly appreciated. I mean, I can sing all of Michael Jackson's "Man In the Mirror" (though it is iffy after the modulation) but I can't do ANY of the grit. And when I do the 7 "woos" at karaoke my voice is shot for 2 or 3 days (I quit doing that in 2009!). Same thing happens if I do the "For MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" in Bohemian Rhapsody.... the voice is scratchy and anhilated for 2 days (I quit doing that years ago too). Let me know if this message was too short. :P

StratMatt777 This is a great comment! Cornell, Kotzen and Thornley all have very similar vocal tones/styles. Cornell barely opened his mouth half of the time which shows that I don’t think he was pushing a lot of air for volume. It seems like head “placement/resonance” is where their volume comes from. As far as the scratchyness goes, I get that if I try and do fry or glottal compression without warming my voice up first. Vocal warmups in my experience are critical. If you read about Myles Kennedy and his warmups, they are pretty extensive and he seems to have no vocal issues being on tour constantly. He doesn’t do as much compression now as he did with the Mayfield Four. Personally, I think if you are getting scratchyness or fatigue then you may be doing something incorrectly. I imagine Chris will weigh in here on all of this. Straining and pushing too much air past the folds seems to be the biggest culprits when it comes to fatigue and hoarseness. But I am only speaking from my own experience. I too am looking to get glottal compression into my toolbox so I am very thankful for these videos.

@@theophany1770 I appreciate your comment because you have scared me away from trying to do this exercise... I only got up to 12:26 in the video last night but my voice is a little bit hoarse and that freaks me out. In just the last 4 days I have happened upon 4 different guitarists giving the advice to stop trying to imitate other players because it will hold you back from finding your own voice.... I think I will apply that to my singing too and stop trying to be Layne Staley myself. HUGE LAYNE STALEY FAN HERE. HUGE! I've been singing for 30 years. When AIC "Dirt" was just released I was a teenager driving around in my car singing my ass off to it (but not with grit). I'm in Seattle, so when Layne Died I and a friend went to the unofficial public gathering at the fountain and the Seattle Center which served as an unofficial funeral type gathering to remember the guy. omg 1 year later after watching this video once a month I finally got it!!! Grit, compression, power... Amazing... Thank you so much! For those who are still trying, here is what I found out: The last element I was lacking of was a really strong support. I noticed I made up for my lack of support with vibrato (another topic covered my Chris Liepe). To solve this issue, I tried to really engage my poop muscles to hold long notes without vibrato, and once I figured this out this video made so much sense. I added compression and got the sound I was looking for almost right away. I think what makes it easier is to get in the spirit and the mindset of a rock singer (as you said in the Dave Grohl video) and not be afraid to make some (loud) silly noises. Thanks again!

Oh. My. God. This actually worked, I just managed to scream (okay, screach) two lines distorted with absolutely zero pain or anything. I'll probably need a year of practice to actually get any proper tone and volume, but I finally understood how it is done, and where the harshness happens. Thank you, Chris. I never thought this is something I ever would be able to do.

I honestly don’t think I’d be able to learn everything I want to with just you, but combining your videos with my in-person lessons is helping me improve a lot quicker than I thought. I’ve spent a year learning and finally made it from barely being able to keep up with Sinatra and Richard Cheese to finally being semi-comfortable with System of a Down. Thank you for that, mate!

Ok I'm not quite there yet :D But I have to say your explanation of mixed voice has totally transformed my singing in just a couple of days of trying. It's not super awesome but I can hit higher notes way easier than I did before and without straining my voice. And this fry thing works aswell while I was trying it in this video :D But I think I'm going to stick with clean for now :D Thank you Chris you have no idea how grateful I am for you sharing this stuff. Cheers from Slovenia.

Dude! Some of the noises you did was Matt Bellamy spot on! the transition from soft falsetto with a huge vibrato into full voice! You could totally do a Muse song and explain how does he play so freely with his voice :)

After almost 3 years old watching your videos and learning by myself, i'm starting to get the sensation of what i'm doing wrong with my compression/support. Thanks Chris! Still got alot of work ahead tho, haha. But you help me stay on the right track.

Hi, you are so fun to watch, yet so educational, most of these online coachings are usually boring, and made too short, like just let's get rid of it.. I'm so happy I found this channel, I'm signed for the lessons, and you gave me the motivation back I needed, when I felt like singing is not for me. Thank you!

Great video again! I really learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. It's so great. Because you explain things right down the baby-level. I've got a question: Its interesting that you mention you had to take breaks a few days sometimes when experimenting with this stuff. I've noticed with myself, that I seem to have this repeating cycle: Day 1: Great singing. Energy, power. Can sing for 2-3 hours. Day 2: Good. Some power. Day 3: Not bad. But voice feels tired. Can't hit the notes (in mix voice), that I could on day 1. Day 4: My voice just doesn't wanna go into mix. Every time I try, it takes all my energy, and the notes I hit sound strained. Day 5: Gotta just not sing for the day. Let myself rest. Few days later: Back to day 1, my voice is full of energy and power. If you have the time to kindly (Just looking for a simple answer), is this is quite normal for beginners? Or is this because I'm using bad technique? Thank you so much again! Have a nice day!
@chrisliepe4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, all singers certainly need rest...no one is exempt! That’s great you’re AWARE of some of your own rhythm - that’s an important key to discovering your own voice. Of course, there’s always more for us to learn and grow in and discover, too! Check out this video that talks about taking good care of our voices: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpavdmeOidGHgac

At least one legit guy to explain us what to do ! It’s literally the best information on the internet about distortion. I’ve followed a masterclass in France from a famous screaming teacher and I can say that everything said here is legit ! Thanks a lot Chris. I’m gonna practice that and scream the shit out of my lungs now.
