Found out is when something exists or people know it’s there and you or someone else finds out it exists. Discover is when nobody knows it exists and you or someone finds it for the first time. This is colloquial. Don't use it in exams or in formal situations! This would also be frowned upon by upper-class and upper-middle-class people.
@EnglishwithLucy8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Smith maybe the middle-aged upper-middle but I hear plenty of upper and upper middle using these words in friendly conversation! As I said in the video, I advise against using it in writing.
@andrewsmith748 жыл бұрын
English with Lucy I'd also advise against using them in an English oral exam, as they're colloquial rather than standard English. Yes, age is another major factor. Older people are much less likely to use these informal contractions.

My students don't have a problem with understanding wanna/gonna, primarily because they know those from songs' lyrics. I am usually fighting a war against the use of wanna/gonna in any written form, like a story or letter. But I wanna see more Lucy videos soon. :D
@ZOMGMiki8 жыл бұрын
Also important that 'gonna' can't be used in the place of 'going to' on its own - 'I'm gonna the shop' is incorrect! Always must be used as part of the infinitive. I'm going [to watch] = I'm gonna watch.

I’ve learned something new from you! For example, he, she, it wansta. And the pronunciation of wanna and gonna. I know how to pronounce them correctly after I watched the video. Thank you so much!
@JohnRandomness1057 жыл бұрын
"He wansta" is really just a minor variation of "He wants to", and someone saying the former probably thinks he's really saying the latter. Everyone knows that "wanna" and "gonna" are reductions of "want to" and "going to", but "wansta" is different. Someone trying to say "wanna" properly will probably say, "I wanto" rather than "I want to", merging the two ts together, perhaps with a hard stop of the n before the t. ("I wan-to")
@dirkvasdeferens18604 жыл бұрын
Yeah - wansta doesn't deserve the recognition.

I have always wondered why english teachers speak in english when explaining something to non english people. If for example my english is crap, how am I supposed to understand her?
@katara37978 жыл бұрын
Nomentsoa I think there's two reasons for that: 1) They only speak English (at least in KZbin they don't know where are suscribers from) and 2) Because after a period of time you're going to get used to words in English (but you have to know their meaning in your native language, and I suggest you to learn from someone who speaks English and your first language)
@freaksfly7 жыл бұрын
It's one more way to improve your hearing. If you can not fully understand it, it's more of an incentive for you to seek understanding. I'm learn english alone and 6 months ago I didn't understand anything, now I can understand without subtitles.

What's the point in trying to sound like a native speaker? Foreign accents are fine as they are. Anyone who thinks they can convince a native speaker that they're British, is wasting their time. They will always make mistakes which will sound far more odd than if they were speaking in their own foreign accent. My German friend speaks very good English, and it's difficult to tell he isn't a native, but he slips up sometimes and it sounds really weird. The other lunchtime (in his English accent) he offered to "borrow" me some money to go to the pub. I rest my case.

There's "wants to" and "wants a", which are slightly different. "He wansta go home" / "He wansa bagel". Compare with "I wanna go home" / "I wanna bagel". One instance where "she wanna" works is as a question, for example "Does she wanna go shopping?"
