The reason the pigment became muddy was because of the complimentary colors you used. In your case, it was the purple and yellow that caused it to create that brownish color. It can happen to other complimentary colors such as blue and orange or read and green.
@wolfcry89684 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Complimentary colors can either be your best friends or your ugly enemies when working with any mediums. Blend with caution, my friends. ✌

I've never used watercolor pencils before and I followed your drawing (using blues and purples) and I am so happy with the result!!! I tried drawing something even simpler earlier and couldn't get it to where I wanted at all- but your trick with going over the wet paper really got what I was looking for!!! Thank you so much!!!

Really like the casual approach to instruction. This was very helpful for me, as I'm an experienced acrylic painter and pastel drawer, but entirely new to watercolor, and thus far have *demolished* my watercolor paper by overworking it. I think your tips will help a lot. Thanks!

Love your about-to-laugh voice, and yes, I am not an artist like my mom was, or you are, but I love my pencils and pens for journaling and Zentangle, and you are right about a reference...i shoot myself in the foot by expecting self to know how-to translate what I see into physical application...doesn't happen without a lot of repetition. Great job... and I just learned how smart and appreciative octopi are when rescued...who knew...

Just picked up my first water color pencils today. I've never used them. Not only was this video very informative, you also said something that hit close to home. "Why do artists expect to be able to draw something the first time they ever draw it." Not word for word. But I was REALLY struggling drawing some animals I've never drawn before, and I was mad that I couldnt get it right the first time. Thank you for that. You're an angel and I hope you dont take some of these rude comments personally.

@joelysos8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Gros-Louis faber castel!! It is a very good brand + blending is easy
@fuzzygoldfish8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Gros-Louis As a beginner, I've found that the regular Derwent are the most forgiving to work with, and they work well with the more challenging inktense pencils. Inktense are definitely my favorite (they're super pigmented, blend like a dream, and don't show the graininess you sometimes get out of watercolor pencils), but they set very quickly and aren't as easy to coax around when I inevitably goof. Really, though, I think the Faber Castel and Derwent art-grade pencils are pretty comparable. Just pick the set with a palette that you like better, as their larger sets do seem to have some color selection differences. I would personally advise against the knock-off brands, as I have yet to find one that performs anything like the artist-grade stuff.

Great video. I agree that you have to be loose and relaxed using a medium like this and just go with the flow. There's never any right or wrong way to use a watercolour pencil. I like how you are bold in your choices :) I have some older Derwent watercolour pencils and I'm wondering if the newer ones are the same/better quality, might have to get a few colours to compare! I recently bought the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer ones and they are absolutely gorgeous (I prefer them to my older Derwent ones). Just need to practice using them more so I can get good effects!

@andrewtongue70845 жыл бұрын
That's a seriously deep voice you have there, Natalia - almost sonorous (in the most pleasing manner). I see you use the same watercolour pencil brand as I - they're first rate implements, but do you know, I tend to dip my pencils in the water as a proforma to outline my sketches, & considering your subject matter (here) is aquatic, I might recommend that you draw fish - mine are mostly freshly caught trout, because I live near to a body of fresh flowing water; ostensibly, the subject will be no more - & so, a still life. Not a scale is wasted, for I take them home for dinner, but it's fascinating to compare the play of light by the riverside, & that which falls thru' my kitchen window. I am very fortunate in that, living in the countryside, all of Mother Nature's wonders are right outside my front door - heron, birds of prey, otters, hedgehog, foxes, ducks - it's a watercolourist's dream. Thank you for this delightful presentation - I'll be looking out for more of your material, & I wish you & yours, the Happiest of New Years !! :D
