I've been using w/c pencils for a while now and i agree with all your advice. i was hesitant with them at first, but i really like them now and use them often. if you want to cover a large area with a wash, then it's much better to use ordinary watercolour with a large brush. but when it comes to fine details, i prefer the better control i have with a w/c pencil than with traditional watercolour. you can also create more interesting textures than with watercolour or ordinary pencils alone. you can apply the w/c pencils and then use a nearly dry brush to half dissolve the pigment. that will help fill in the white gaps beneath the tooth of the paper, but also help preserve the texture you drew. and you can mix media, watercolour for a b/g wash, then w/c pencils on top for further details, and finally ordinary pencils (or unactivated w/c pencils) for fine details and adjustments for realism. or you if your drawing has outlines, you can use ordinary pencils for the outlines, then w/c pencils for the colouring. activating the w/c pencils will leave the outlines intact.

I never tried watercolor pencils this way. Because when I want to draw realistic I go for colored pencils which I already have enough. When I want a more expressive painting I use watercolor out of tubes and pans 😊 which looks realistic but in a more stylized way

I’m glad a video like this came out on your channel. I’m a beginner who mostly bought watercolor pencils because I thought they would be more versatile, but there are very few videos about how to use them! I was caught between watching water color tutorials and colored pencils tutorials just to see how I can apply them to coloring my pages. This has helped substantially in getting more experimental with using the watercolor aspect of my pencils. Thank you

Man! I wish that you had this video out two years ago when first got into colored pencils. I bought watercolor pencils thinking that they would be the same as blending colored pencils with solvent. Boy was I wrong! As always LOVED THE VIDEO, thank you for being such a huge inspiration Kirsty.

Hey, I'm a beginner and I want to buy water colour pencils. Would you recommend the coloured pencils, because I thought watercolours would be easier, faster and more efficient I came to a conclusion to buy those but reading your comments has confused me so please do tell me what and why you recommend. Thanks!
@cadencenova2 жыл бұрын
@@venus6858 Well it depends on what your going for. I was going for realism like Kirsty. She has a video on watercolor colored pencils if you want to watch that, she also has a beginners guide to colored pencils too. Both mediums are wonderful but when it comes to watercolor pencils I noticed that they are better for a looser art style (plus they were a little hard for me to work with). Regular colored pencils are better at getting the details and maybe a little less messy lol. In the end, it all depends on YOUR art style and what you find enjoyable. I hope this helps and have a blessed day. (;
@miklosnemeth85662 жыл бұрын
@@cadencenova is completely right. Watercolor pencils are perfect for watercolor pan paint replacement. With some effort they can be used as regular color pencils, too. If you watch Kirsty Partridge tiger portrait video, you will recognize that after the first layer of watercolor she draws a second details layer on top of the base layer using her watercolor pencils as regular color pencils: she did not activate this second layer with water, she just left it dry, very tricky. The result looks as if made with regular color pencils.

@@miklosnemeth8566 so which one should I buy? I'm beginner
@miklosnemeth8566 Жыл бұрын
@@shubham_M7777 I have watercolor (Derwent Inktense, Faber Castell), regular color (Prismacolor) and Pastel (Stabilo, Derwent and Faber Castell) I love them all but a tiny bit I am a pastel fan today, ask me in two months and I might see it differently. :)
@sunnyschramm9650 Жыл бұрын
not really identical imho and you get much more realistic results with colored pencils - you just have to work a little bit more and invest into more layers - which needs a "good paper" like "fabriana hot pressed"-, "Arches Hot Pressed" or "strathmore Bristol vellum" (all watercolor paper with 270/300g/m²). you can use a paper-blender-pencils or "zest-it pencil blender" (fluid to use a brush) to get much more vibrant colors (with a wet look effect if you want) and better and faster transition between different colored pencils. use soft colored pencils like "prismacolor premier" (more poppin colors) or "caran d´ache luminance" (more natural colors) for the base of your panting and then use the harder mines from the "faber-castell polychromos" or "derwent lightfast" for details. but at the end its all a personal style thing. you can make great art with every technique and material ❤ And of course you all know that today as I saw in your newer videos 🙂
@oilonpaper2 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that you're surprised the watercolor pencils worked so well for realism. 😉:) I love them because they are so versatile and easy to use. You don't need any harsh blenders, just water, no burnishing on large areas required either (your hand will thank you), just at the end when you want to put detail in. What's not to like, right? ;)

It depends on what you're going for really. I've noticed a wax or oil based pencil is better for photorealism. While the same look can be achieved with watercolor, I feel it's properties are somewhat wasted going for that look. But I also like to do some parts of a watercolor painting realistic, and other areas more abstract and have a drip look. But I suppose that's all just preference.

I love using watercolour pencils for sketching when I want to go for lineless style. They're so forgiving, too, since all you have to do to correct mistakes is just blend them a bit, and it's also easier on the paper than using rubber. I got mine ages ago, when I was still a kid and for the longest time I didn't know how to use them cause there was no one to teach me nor was I able to find any tutorials myself. I used to think they're crap because I would dip them in water and try to draw like that lol. I wouldn't say I'd replace regular watercolours with them, but they have their uses and truly are an underrated medium.

Recently took the plunge and bought 36 set of F.C. Polychromos along with 36 set of F.C. Albrecht Durer. Bought from Blick's for about $47 - $50 each set. They have the same name and colors for both sets. I like that you can buy open stock on any colored pencils. Bought 1 Caran D'Ache Scarlet red Museum @ 3.46 each. Looking at Faber Castell website says only a few stores are licensed to sell them... Blick's is one.

Both work well but prismas are softer and more waxy and polychromos are oil based and a little harder. or the arteza premium colored pencils are a cheap in between. Still soft but a little harder than prismos, still very vibrant and saturated but doesn’t cause as much wax build up.
