Yep, I was going to be that guy who writes a book size comment about how the whole warm/cool thing is backwards and how we are setting a compensation value… bla,bla, bla. Nope not going to do it. (I mean not now, my ocd will kick in and I’ll leave another comment in an hour). LOL. Another great video, Vanessa, thank you!

Serious question, I am studying this, I clicked this video to practice reviewing the values and the values in the video are backward right? I was trying to memorize the different values (day light, tungsten, shade/heavy overcast etc.) The video says the lower number values like 2800k would be cool colors and the higher values would be warmer colors, but I thought I understood it to be the other way around? I am not trying to be funny and this is the first comment that mentions that might be the case.

@@melindamchurchillso no, not really since I’m talking about the affect that the K has on the photo, vs the K value matching the light temperature. It can be confusing but I prefer explaining it through what it does to your picture as you move the dial ❤

For people thinking the Kelvin scale is normally presented the other way around: It's true, it is due to the fact that Vanessa describes the effect it has on your photos, rather than the Kelvin scale itself. Which is a sensible thing to do....why overcomplicate things? The Kelvin scale for colour temperature itself is indeed warm orange for 2800K and blue for 10000K. If you take a tungsten wire and run current through it... it will first glow red, orange...and then blue the hotter it gets. That is why we call it a colour temperature as it's the colour that the wire emits at a certain temperature (in science temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin instead of Fahrenheit or Celcius). The reason why it is presented backwards here is because Vanessa describes the effect it has on your photos. With the Kelvin setting you will choose what colour temperature the camera sees as 'normal' or 'pure' white. You can imagine with mixed lighting (of different colour temperatures) that perceiving 9000K as pure white (which is very blue on the Kelvin scale), everything will seem orange in comparison. Also, perceiving 2800K as pure white (which is pretty orange on the temp scale) will make almost everything look very blue in comparison. That is why the Kelvin scale and the photo result are the other way around.

Vanessa, The white balance setting is paramount when shooting inside with varied types of lighting in churches, commercial buildings, and Auditoriums. With the extreme ISO settings, you’re able to capture action shots at sporting events, any movement from animals or humans. The white balance neutralizes the yellow or blue ( warm and cold) You can Also create some spectacular fireworks. While post processing is the creative effort for saving or enhancing shots. Learn the complexities of your camera lens combo, utilize your creativity on the composure instead of hundreds of hours in post processing. Tack sharp is an art form. Soft images should be intentional, not covering for out of focus. Vanessa, really appreciate your tips on the latest as well as the entry level body with higher end glass for professional outcome. Continue with outstanding content. TRJM 🍀🦅✡️

Hi Vanessa, first off all I love watching your videos! I have a question about the white balance setting when I use flash light connected on my camera body indoors. As I have hardly experience taking photos indoors, because I normally do outside street photography and not used to flash. Next week I have a five days event for work that will be at different indoors locations and they asked me to take the photos so that will be a challenge LOL. I have 2 older basic bodies the EOS 700D and on loan an even older model the EOS 50D with a Canon speedlight 600. My question: Do I need to set my white balance on flash mode or just leave it at auto or do you have an other suggestion? Thank you, Johan
@VanessaJoy Жыл бұрын
you might like the flash setting, which sets it at 5600k I believe. I think auto would potentially do about the same so i wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're going to put a CTO gel over your flash, and in that case you would set your kelvins to tungsten or about 3000k and that'll get rid of the yellow-look that a lot of on-camera flash indoor photos have

If you picked the wrong colour temperature, you could always fix it in post, but the right colour temperature is also important to pick the right exposure in camera. Not a lot of people know this.
