AT&T doesn't currently allow you to use your own router exclusively, but they do allow your own router behind theirs with few restrictions (and that's the main point). The cable modem router wifi combo I demonstrate is with the Arris/Motorola BGW210-700 that AT&T sent me in July 2020, configuring to use with my pre-existing Netgear Orbi set ( jo.my/orbi ).

Thank you so much! I've had AT&t fiber for about 4 months now and I was forced to buy their crappy extenders because I couldn't get my orbi to work with it. You showed me that all I had to do was two resets back to back on their horrible gateway to get my system to work with thiers. My orbi is running great now and my wifi speeds are no longer in the 30mbps max with their equipment.

Thank you for this straight forward video. There is one error in your explination though; if you have a router connected to the AT&T gateway via a hard wire you do not need to connect your computer directly to the gateway to gain access to it after you turn the wifi off at the gateway. You only need to type the IP address of the gateway into your web browser and it will load up just fine. In essence your computer is indirectly connected over wifi to the gateway through said cable. Again thank you very much for such a helpful video! I too am enjoying a much faster internet connection.

I couldn't get it to work until I switched the subnet on the BGW320 to x.x.0.x since the ASUS was set up on the x.x.1.x subnet. Hi Mike! Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I recently switched from Xfinity to AT&T and had an existing Orbi RBK853 system set up with Xfinity. Right away, when I switched and plugged in my AT&T Modem/Router combo into my Orbi--I knew something was off. This video was extremely helpful in finding a comparable 'bridge mode' option on AT&T's router. The only additional item that I did was, even though none were checked, I disabled all of the packet filtering and also decided to use Google DNS on my Orbi's settings. Things are much smoother now. For those concerned about leaving the AT&T wireless still on while running a router like the Orbi. One suggestion is to turn off the 2.4Ghz radio on the AT&T router but leave the 5Ghz radio on with a different SSID. There is no channel overlap on the 5Ghz spectrum so you can safely leave it on without issue. But, you do just have to connect to the AT&T wireless network with a 5Ghz capable device. But, it does keep you from having to connect wired. locally to the ATT router to manage it.

These directions are tremendously helpful, and got me to a partial success. I didn't have to change the IP address because the new router, TP-Link Archer AX 6600, used a different one than the AT&T modem. Then I followed the rest of the directions. My own laptop and cell phone are connected and whizzing with triple the speed from before. Thank you. But I can't connect any other family devices (phones or laptops). The router won't accept my password, which I've verified repeatedly (and used successfully, above). I got one device to connect via WPS (a tablet), but not another (a cell phone). So then I went into my router's own software ("Tether") and updated the firmware. Now neither that tablet nor the cell phone will connect via WPS or password. I can be taught, but I don't know what to do at this point. Before I pack up the router and send it back, can anyone please rescue me with some ideas?

It worked! _Thank you_ for sparing me a tremendous amount of frustration. I am a subscriber now for sure. As for compatibility mode, I couldn't find a setting like that, so I presume I didn't mess that up. The literature for the TP-Link says that it's supposed to alleviate the very problem you're describing, so TP-LInk probably made it hard for a novice like me to nullify a feature they are proud of. Alternative approach: Instead of configuring the modem-router into virtual bridge mode, you can easily configure Orbi from router to access point mode. This turns off Orbi's DHCP server and avoids "double -NAT" issues while delivering the same Wi-Fi performance with less configuration work.

It doesn't matter if I use IP passthrough or not or whether the wifi is active on the router. Nothing seems to change the speed on my eero. Anything I may have missed?

Hi Mike - Thank you for publishing the series of videos about using your own router with the AT&T BGW210. I do have a question... What is the recommended configuration when you want to hang two routers off the BGW210? I have a NetGear Orbi router that runs my personal mesh network AND my employer provides a Cisco ISR 1100 router for my work systems. I would like to hang both the NetGear router and Cisco router off the BGW210 but that means I cannot use the passthrough function, correct?
@MikeMu
@MikeMu 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, you can use the pass-through function only on one device. But, for business use AT&T may be able to unlock more flexibilty, but ask you to pay more. It wouldn't be residential service anymore, but business class. Or you may ask to get a completely separate AT&T line / service to use with your Cisco/work stuff, and hopefully also paid for by work. (You'd ask for at least 2 dedicated IPs).

Hi Mike, (or anyone reading this) I have couple of questions, please :) 1. Is there not an option for running 2 SSID parallel? meaning two wifi network? What will be the downside for keeping both network up? 2. Do we have to turn off all the firewall on the ATT router? P/S: Im using BGW320-500 For context, before this I was using both Nest Wifi and ATT router concurrently with same SSID. And the issue was my smart home devices was not functioning correctly.... i.e. youtube music not casting correctly to the right devices, as it sense i am on different network. I read if i were to set my ATT router bridge mode that will help with this issue.
@MikeMu
@MikeMu 10 күн бұрын
1. You can run them in parallel, but they will have to be different SSIDs. I see no point in doing this with ATT and your Nest. 2. You don't need to turn it off on the ATT if you don't want. 3. BGW-320-500 is same software so this all still applies. 4. If you want to cast stuff, you need to make sure all your devices are on the same SSID/network (caster and receiver for instance).

Thanks so much for these tutorials! You’re so clear and concise. I have ATT fiber 1gb to the house with the BGW210-700 and I hooked up an Archer AX11000 wifi6 to bypass for better speeds, etc. because I was buffering when streaming and dropping on service. I was wavering between the Archer and a mesh wifi6 and thought I’d try the Archer since I have it. The modem/router and router are on the top floor and the buffering etc was happening on both the top and lower floor. After hooking up the new router, I’m getting much better speeds when I’m using the 5gh, mid 400’s up and down on average, but the 2.4 is really slower than when I only had the BGW. I’m getting mid 40s up and down. Is there a reason for this? I rebooted both routers after configuring, but I did not reset either of them. Will changing the dns as you mentioned somewhere help? Thanks!

Mike, you video is very good - I have watched it several times, each time getting more information and more comfortable with performing the changes to Passthrough Mode. One question - When Passthrough Mode is selected at the Allocation Mode box other videos recommend entering the MAC address of the router, in your case you choose to "choose from list" and that brought up a MAC address without manual entering one. In my case I manually entered the MAC from my router. Help me understand - what is the difference? The MAC address you "selected from list"???? Where did that MAC come from??? I am concerned that my MAC address may not be the correct one. Please reply if you get this notification of my comment. Thanks.

The one from the list is what the router sees as connected. One should match exactly with the one you entered (assuming no other modifications were made).

At 10 and 24 minutes you discuss the option of disabling WiFi on AT&T gateway. For IP passthrough to work you need to disable both 2.4 and 5 ghz WiFi operation on the AT&T gateway. This will also improve latency (ping)
@MikeMu
@MikeMu 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ali, I did some side to side tests and it didn't noticeably affect my configurations at all speed, or ping (the signals from both my units were using different frequency spectrums anyway). But that was within a month of the original video posting. Maybe something has changed, and in that case I'd need to do a bit more testing. I'll get to it next month. I'm glad its working out for you, and when someone asks I'll suggest they do just that (disable wifi) as a potential solution if they run into issues. Hi Mike - This video helped tremendously as I was setting my network up. However something seems to have changed on network and I was hoping you might be so kind as to help me diagnose a bit. I followed the steps on this video as prescribed all the way up to the step of turning off the existing att wifi. I don’t recall if I turned the wifi off or left it on. Having said that - everything worked very well until I came back from a vacation and noticed incredibly slow speeds on my mesh system. So slow that I was unable to login into vpns. Speed test showed incredibly slow speeds. I also noticed that some devices started connecting back to the original att WiFi. So I went back to this video to see what changed with my setup. All I can tell that seems a miss is that regardless of being on att or my mesh system I can acces the att ip address page without issue. So my understanding is that both routers are aligned to the same IP address that I had previously changed only my mesh network to. For context - My area suffers power and internet outages often and one was experienced between the time it was working well and started having trouble. Also the mesh system I am using is the ASUS zen wifi ax. Does this sound right? Should I simply go back to the att WiFi and change the digit again? Thanks for any help that you can suggest in advance!

Corben, Definitely get a good UPS for your systems - that would prevent a lot of issues with networks. Do not skimp on this. Bigger, the better. And don’t plug anything but your critical network stuff (ie AT&T and your first mesh). Here is one that I use amzn.to/3F0Jr0e. With how little the network equipment draws, I can power the system for hours easy and that’s what you want. You may be having an IP conflict. Maybe the systems got reset during power outage. That would definitely cause the symptoms you see. If you can, log into each of the systems and check the settings. Also check the system logs - they will usually pop up some sort of error. On AT&T side, definitely turn off the Wifi. Make sure no other IP addresses are in use on the local side except the one = Asus Zen Mesh system. If there are, it’s not going work as well and may get bogged down. Maybe while it is still on, some devices reverted to AT&T since that came up first or was primary? On the Asus side - I can’t help much except to check the settings are correct and check the error logs or system logs for some details on what is going on. I haven’t used an ASUS router in years so I don’t know my way around any of the newer stuff (for certainty). Also it is possible your network equipment got damaged from power outages/surges/brownouts. Can’t rule that out. It happens much more often than you would think. So… get that UPS. Good luck! -Mike
