I travel the world full time and have t-mobile with free data and texts internationally which works great for sms auth codes.

Nice! Do you know if they have any limits to how long you can be outside the US?

What plan do you have that allows you to use your phone all throughout the world with no additional costs?
@PeggyD1001Ай бұрын
@@ProjectUntethered The T-Mobile website says "With qualifying plans. In select countries. Not for extended international use. Coverage not available in some areas." It doesn't specify how long "extended international use" is. Current qualifying plans are the Go5G plans but we have OnePlan, an older, grandfathered plan that qualifies.

Your channel is awesome! I originally found it because of my interest in traveling to Cali Colombia but I’ve learned a lot about air travel from you. Thanks for creating and sharing your videos.

Sometimes you can’t even get good WiFi at your hotel especially early to mid morning and mid to late afternoon or if the router is blocked by a beam in the hallway

Yeah that is the worst! That's why I always like a Plan B

You are correct for Google Fi. I used your advice and setup a US number while living in Mexico by a eSIM so didn't have to setup in country. Then switched all our banks and cc's to that number.

Nice! Are you staying outside the US long-term?
@Kong-kg6ijАй бұрын
@@ProjectUntethered Yeah, we have been living in Mexico for the past two years and starting next year we are headed for Portugal and plan to spend the year in Europe.
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
Awesome! Has Google Fi worked that entire time? Or do you use a different US number now?
@Kong-kg6ijАй бұрын
@@ProjectUntethered No I had to quit Google Fi after 90 days in Mexico. I'm using US Mobile now on an eSIM.

Hey Mitch, how about WiFi calling?
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
That can help you receive texts/calls to your home number if you set it up right!

Very informative. Thank you for all this info. I just need some clarification: So before you leave the U.S you turn on Wi-Fi calling, toggle Data Roaming to Off, and install the app for the esim? Thanks

Do you need an eSIM to use Google maps? I really don’t understand any of this. What if you don’t use your phone to make calls when overseas, are you charged?
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
You need some sort of internet connection to use Google Maps (unless you download a map offline beforehand). So that internet connection could be from wifi (like at your hotel or a coffee shop) or it could be from a data plan on your phone (like a physical SIM card or an eSIM). Basically this video is showing the different ways you can stay connected to the internet on your phone while you're abroad without getting charged tons of money.

Can you make local calls with just data ? If the locals don’t use messenger or WhatsApp.
@JD-zt3nrАй бұрын
except you cant make phone calls or send text messages with holafly, at least not in the UK. AND Holafly does not support wifi calling. Going back to scotland in november and will get a pay as you go sim from EE, a local carrier.
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
I turn wifi calling on my home line before leaving, then use Holafly data to make/receive calls. Has been working like a charm!
@JD-zt3nrАй бұрын
@@ProjectUntethered I'm confused by you saying you turn on wifi calling on your home line. So you're making the wifi calls from your regular phone plan (via your non-holafly SIM)? I'm talking about wifi calling with actual phone numbers, not with Apps using VOIP. You can't call a tow truck, or a store with an app. If you are able to do this, could you do a quick video on how you can set this up on an Android phone? Thanks.
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
Yup you are making calls through your regular phone plan, but instead of using the roaming cell service from your regular phone plan, you're using the data from your Holafly eSIM (or wifi from your hotel) to make the call. This works with just a normal cell phone line, not a VOIP. I don't have an Android phone unfortunately, but I would just call your home provider and ask about it!
@AmyRogers-w5mАй бұрын
What is the best option then if you mostly use WiFi so don’t need much data but want to be able to make local calls to places that don’t use WhatsApp?
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
If you only need to make a local call once in a while, I like to just charge up some Skype credit on my phone.
@MartinDezionАй бұрын
I am confused. Is the eSIM a physical sim card that must be "installed" that i must wait for it to come in snail mail. With only 4 days remaining before departure, am i out of luck for the Holafly option this time around?

Nothing new to me. I most countries I buy a SIM card if i stay quiet for a while. Problem is when someone likes to communicate with you via WhatsApp you need to go to the first number you used.😅

Do you have dual SIM card slots? I just use my home number as my whatsapp number that never changes.
