The Weight Aids
Believe it or not, the way that you sit in the saddle and where you place your weight can have a big effect on your horse. The main function of your seat is to follow and absorb the motion of your horse but where you place your weight in the saddle can have a big effect on your horse.
In this week's video we give a bit more info on weight placement, why it’s important, and what it means when your weight is in different parts of the saddle.
Here’s a really common example of how your seat can negatively affect your horse - and I see this a lot! Lets say you’re cantering, you feel your horse get tense and speed up, you lean forward, lighten your seat, and pull. Your horse will more than likely get worried and start tensing more and go faster.
If you feel your horse gets tense, you should place your weight onto your horse sit back into the saddle, make yourself heavier and reassure your horse with your seat - do not abandon them. Believe it or not horses get confidence from your seat!
Another reason your weight aids are important is that in dressage, we want our horses to carry more weight behind, so we should consciously think about sitting a little more back onto the horse’s hind end to encourage them to bring their legs under them to bear the weight more behind.
Downward transitions are another situation where people regularly tip forward when they should be sitting back and helping their horse to stay engaged.
Have a look at this video and let me know if you find it helpful!

Thank you, Amelia, for explaining something so fundamental but mostly invisible. One of the hardest things for me is understanding how to ‘do’ the verbal instructions as a visual learner. You break it down and provide the necessary context that makes it clearer to me.

I'd like to see you do these on a horse who reacts the way you say they will react (like on not such a good boy).

Hi Suzannah! Thanks for you reply! I often do my videos on younger less experienced horses but it just so happened that this one was filmed on this (extremely) good boy! But let me know if you find the advice i the video helpful while riding. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!

When you ask the horse to canter, do you put your weight in the middle of the saddle or have more weight on the inside/outside? Thank you!

Please comment on how our weight should be when we need to counter-canter on a circle.

For counter canter, you should have your weight the same as true canter. Ie if you are counter cantering on the right lead on the left rein, you should have your weight aids the same as true right lead canter :)

I am learning to hunter/jumper style. In this style, It seems that riders are mostly in half seat whike cantering. How would we apply these weight aids in this situation?

I understand to weight your seat by not leaning forward, but how do you maintain lightness in the saddle if you are waiting the saddle? Would putting wait in your stirrups be an option? Thanks.

You have to have a strong core so that you can move with the horse and absorb the movement which makes it so you aren't as negatively heavy in the saddle. :)
