This video demonstrates how to use an external MIDI instrument (for example a Yamaha keyboard) with Cubase. Connecting external MIDI instruments via USB MIDI is straightforward and here Greg shows how recording MIDI and then playing it with the instrument’s own sounds through Cubase - including rendering to a Cubase audio track, if desired - is easily accomplished.
We hope you find this video entertaining and useful. If you like what you see, please leave a comment and tell us what you think. Thank you.

it would be amazing to be able to create more than one external instrument per audio-input. so you could have a physical mixer before the interface but still be able to make use of the comfortable external instrument handling.

Thank you for your video. I am using the Roland Octapad SPD-30. I have added the external bass drum (Roland KD-7), snare drum (Roland V-Drum) and the Hi-Hat (Roland FD-8) to the Octapad. I use it as my drum set. I know how to record the Octapad drum set into one track. However, is there a way for me to have each individual pad (in this case 11 pads) be recorded into their own individual track simultaneously? I want to be able to do this in case I want to only change the volume of the snare, or tom tom, or cymbal, etc.? I cannot find anything anywhere to show me how to do this. Thanks.

I just jumped from a very old version of cubase, like 5 to 9 elements. As far as mixing vocals go, why when I add effects to audio channel I'm only allowed 8 total fx all together then it says you're at a limit. But if I insert it to the channel strip I can pretty much use as many effects as I want??? 🤔🤔 Am I doing something wrong?

Home recording hobbyist. I'd say past Beginner, solid Intermediate in skills/knowledge. Do most home recording hobbyists record external device instruments "dry" without effects and add effects in the box? Or like recording a guitar, good habit to record dry and wet? I bought a Korg microStation years ago to have fast access to tons of sounds without taxing the DAW or computer memory. What do most people do when integrating production keyboard sounds?

I can't seem to find any sort of tutorial that properly describes not only how to set up a generic remote for a transport and for some sort of basis for controls, but also how to set up the midi controller to work within individual VST instruments. For example, when I open up Kontakt libraries' violin, there are knobs for Attack and so on that appear on Kontakt's VST interface. I've tried right-clicking the knobs and telling it to "Learn", but it doesn't work -- the problem is that all my knobs do the same thing, which is panning the speakers left and right. Or my sliders, which just turn the volume up or down. I thought this video might explain that, but nope! Could someone PLEASE direct me to the right place? :)

@finsterbaby1996
@finsterbaby1996 2 жыл бұрын
@Simz Kulla I had this same problem, but another KZbinr reminded me that you have to play the MIDI information you recorded in Cubase BACK to the external instrument from which it was recorded. Then once you've recorded all your MIDI tracks, edited them, etc., in order to NOT have to have them play back through your external instrument(s) anymore, you have to create an Audio track for each MIDI track, arm it for recording, Solo the MIDI track you want to record to the new Audio track, and then just hit the main Record button. This will lock in the sound from your external instrument as an Audio signal (where you can't edit the notes or anything else you can do with MIDI information), and then add effects and whatever else you want to do and do your final mix-down and exporting. Hope this is clear enough to be helpful, even after your 3-year-old post.

Thanks for posting. I’m using a UR824 and have eliminated the mixer due to physical space. The zero latency monitor is very good. But, one issue I’ve run into is zero latency monitoring works are regular audio tracks but doesn’t appear to work with external instrument tracks. Any ideas? I use a lot of outboard synthesizers and instead of using external instrument tracks I’m creating individual midi and audio tracks to take advantage of zero latency monitoring. Thanks again.
@teddym2808
@teddym2808 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, to use the zero latency DSP mixing of the UR824 with external instruments, you would use a normal midi track triggering the external synth, and have the instrument plugged into an audio input of the UR824.. The external instrument tracks are not being routed through the DSP mixer at all AFAIK.. You'd need to bypass the UR824 mixer to use the external instrument track of Cubase but then you'd be subject to the monitoring latency of the in and out latency of the UR824's normal driver.

I have faced this also on my attempt to use external instrument. Yes, Cubase compensates delays when it plays the project, it is great. Also I can use Cubase VST-effects, this is also great. But if I play on the midi-keyboard, external synth sounds with a small but noticeable delay.

@mitchiemasha
@mitchiemasha 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. You simply create a new midi track and route it to the midi device that has been loaded as a VST external instrument. Set the midi channel to the right midi number. You'll still get all the names in the inspector. Some synths like the CS2x have master fx and the performance part is the first 4 midi channels (Midi 2-4 can be used for other device). Even though the CS2x is only a 1 performance synth, the other midi are material layers, stacking the midi channels we can recreate the performance sounds. I've expanded The Nord 2, Jv1080, Drum/Bass Station and the CS2x instrument lists. the ones that come with cubase don't go deep enough into their content. I forget how the Proteus handles performance and material voices. I sold my Emu's some time back.

I created an instrument track for the HaLion and used my Nektar Impact LX25+ as the keyboard and it recorded that track. I really want this to work especially since it is 61 keys I can use it as a midi keyboard for any VST instrument. - HELP.

There is an issue with the sequencer in "midi insert" where note length values do not respond correctly. No matter how short you set the synthesizer's decay, the sequencer will respond to the correct note length only when you play a chord. But if you record it as midi, when you play it back, you'll immediately hear the note length become sluggish because it doesn't match the decay of the synth. This is rubbish. Even if you modify the length in the plug-in, it will not match. To summarize, the length of the notes you hear when you play a chord is not the same as the length of the notes you hear when you record it as midi and then play it back.I'm using c12.

@eden rubin Just an idea, but does your Yamaha have a "Layer" function that allows you to combine two (or more) tones and then play and record them all into one track in Cubase? If not, if you want two (or more) sounds from your Yamaha to play exactly the same notes, you can always just copy one track to another after setting up the correct patch(es) in Cubase. Hope this helps.

@@finsterbaby1996 i was more talking about two different parts. You cant make two prts with different sound, you have to render each one of them every time and doing it with the current settings, if you'll change the sound in your synth and won't save it as a preset you'll need to do all the settings again. I'm not complaining, its cool to have this ability to make your synth become a VST in your DAW, but it's still a hassle

@@Eden_Rubin_Music Ok, I think now I understand what you're trying to do. If so, what you need to do is set each sound that you want to record and later play back to a different MIDI channel in Cubase. For example, if you want to use a piano sound, set it up in Cubase as channel 1, for a bass sound, set it as channel 2, and so on. I have been trying to do this same thing with my keyboard in Cubase for almost 6 years, and I finally got it to work just a few nights ago. But another step that I had to do was to enter the corresponding Bank number and Patch number into the MIDI editor for each track. Your keyboard instructions should have come with a list of all the sounds in it with these numbers, or you may have to download the list from their support website. My problem was that the patch numbers in my list needed to be increased by one number to play back the correct sound. I have no idea why this was, but as I said, it took me nearly 6 years, and some accidental messing around with the numbers to find it out. But now that I have, I can finally use all the great sounds on it instead of having to search through my libraries of VSTs to find sounds that I want to use. I hope I understand what you're trying to do and that this helps this time.

It works fine however you have indeed to render the track to free the “external vst” to be able to use the “external vst” on a new track. One track at the time.

I having the same issue where I can only do one sound at a time from my external keyboard and I haven't quite yet figured out how to free up the external vst device.😳 Do I completely delete the original external device track after rendering to audio, and create it again with a new sound? Shouldn't I be able to utilize 16 tracks from the external device and render all those tracks to individual audio tracks?

@@travisepps9695 16 tracks would be nice indeed :-) When i have rendered the track, i keep the midi track of the external vst but i remove the external vst linked to it. Once done i can reassign the external vst to a new track. Cumbersome but i do not have found an alternative way to do it.

hey so when the banks are on the side do those trigger on your keyboard and change sound from say piano to organ? If so mine doesn't work. I have a Roland E09.

When rendering in place, how do I u mute the original track instrument? Pressing the mute button on the track itself doesn't seem to work.

I'm not enjoying this whole experience. I cannot even find that recording window that you have open on AI 10! I have a rack of vintage gear that I want to use with a USB Keyboard, Cubase and a 64bit win 7 laptop.

I need a tutorial on how to set it up with a Waldorf Kyra. An external synth that is not on the list. It's really, really difficult to get it working. This tutorial is more of a show off.

Why is your youtube intro theme music so much louder than your voice? It’s hurting my eardrums and I really like what you are teaching.

You show just a little of what can be done! Great! BUT why is the pace too fast? It simply is too fast! If you paused, REPEATED, and say it twice for each crucial thing you do it would help.

Too much setup just to play an external instrument. Logic Pro X just works instantly. None of this jumping through so many hoops just to record external MIDI - for heaven's sake! Way too much hassle.

Really annoying you can't use render in place on multiple midi tracks when setting the external synth as a rack, the same way you could with a virtual instrument setup as a rack. The only other method I can see is using a bothersome macro. There's no logical reason to not include this functionality as all Cubase would need to do is solo the channel and then real-time render it down as the same with virtual instruments.
