I know there are people who scoff at paying for instructional videos, but when you search for starter clutch tutorials how many people mess them up the first time and have to go back and fix it? Now you're taking your whole engine apart to get to this fix and is your time and frustration worth twenty bucks? Not to mention your flywheel, timing chain, valves and whatever else can break apart if you do this job incorrectly. I took the chance to pay and it was the best decision I could have made. I had some frustrations along the way and Matt answered every single one of my emails with genuine concern and was more than willing to help me make sure the bike was back to perfect. What came with the $20 was not only a great, thorough and well shot video, but also the knowing that there are still people out there who care. In a world where customer service has dwindled down to automated phone systems and dismissive operators when you get one, Matt is one of those guys who cares about the job he does and wants nothing more than for you to succeed at your projects. I can guarantee it. Thanks for all your help, Matt!!

Having problems with my 08 yamaha v star 1100 classic - approx. 18000 miles. When trying to start the bike it turns over but doesn't start. There's a loud clunking noise as the engine turns over. Hi Matt, I am trying to diagnose a starting problem on my 2008 WR250R. It takes multiple cranks to start the bike cold, before it actually starts. I've checked or replaced the battery, spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector, throttle body, air filter, starter relay and starter motor and they all work. Does this sound like it could be starter clutch problem and should I try to take it apart to figure out? Thanks.
@HTMR6 жыл бұрын
If the motor cranks over, it's not the starter clutch. I'm sorry, but I don't have a lot of experience with FI. Maybe a sensor is faulty and not telling the ECM to deliver the right amount of fuel for starting????

Hi Matthew, First off, I support this. I get it, this is how you feed your family, don't sweat the haters. I just have a question. I'm pretty sure after this winter I messed up my starter clutch pretty badly trying to get a stubborn bike going and turning the throttle despite knowing I shouldn't. I had hoped to make it through the riding season before I went in and replaced it, but now I'm getting that whirring sound and the starter isn't grabbing. So when I stop the bike half the time i get a THWACK!, and sometimes when I start it sounds like i'm trying to start the bike with a bag of rocks. Lastly when I am riding and I accelerate past what I guess is about 4k rpms I hear rattling, as if something is loose. Are all three of these problems connected to the starter clutch?
@HTMR7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas, thanks for the supporting words. Yes, I would say all is related to starter clutch. The rollers that are supposed to "grab" and also "let go" are shot.

hello, i just bought a 2001 vstar 1100. The issue seems to be that the battery will not charge. we bought a brand new battery and rode for 40 miles, then at a stop light it all went out. I called a friend and charged it for 30 minutes, then started back up and rode another 20 miles before the battery died. Could this be caused by the stator? i am lost and rightfully pissed because i just bought it and there are only a couple weeks left to ride.

You are doing a video on the 1100... is the 650 done the exact same way? Also, if my starter a) doesn't engage at all, or b) when it does engage, it barely turns a bit, then clicks with a full battery, is this indicative of a bad starter clutch or some other issue?
@HTMR6 жыл бұрын
If the starter clutch is bad, you will here the starter "spin" and the engine will not turn over. If you are getting clicking, then you probably have a poor connection somewhere.

Hey Matt, thanks for the video. I found it to be very helpful to know what I was getting myself into before I started this project. I do have a question if you have a moment to answer it. The dealer listened to my bike try to start and they said that the starter clutch had failed. I originally thought it was the fuel pump, because you could not hear the pump pressurizing the fuel line. They agreed that the fuel pump was also probably bad and agreed that it was a little odd that both systems failed at basically the same time. The bike would start with some effort (I could hit the starter several times in an on/off pattern and based off what I know know, it seems that the starter clutch would eventually engage). The concern that I am having is that I have the flywheel pulled, but the starter clutch seems to be operating normally. It will not turn counter clockwise and turns freely clockwise. Do you think the dealer was wrong in their diagnostics (I agreed with it based on sound and the research I did)? Or do you think that the starter clutch was just starting to slip in my case and that I can't load it enough with my bare hands? I don't want to order the kit if the starter clutch isn't really the problem.
@HTMR9 жыл бұрын
Eric Burkemper Eric, I replied to your email. Due to the high failure rate of starter clutches, just go ahead and replace it. Do any of the rollers looked damaged?
