I periodically look up more information on pigeon health and care to learn how I can avoid letting these diseases into my loft/flock. Can the injection location be at the base of the leg as well? I use this location when giving antibiotics. I find it's easier to control the bird this way.

Yes!! The other location is at the base of the leg, specifically the “webbing”, the stretch of skin between the base of the leg and the body. That vaccination site is more readily accessible and I have done it there, but I’ve heard from multiple sources that the vaccine absorbs better when injected in the skin of the neck-haven’t seen any evidence or medical publication to support that so who knows really. Just get them vaccinated is the main thing, right?

Question, is pmv more common in racers? I have high flyers and they're finally breeding and have had some babies I'm wondering if i need to vaccinate their yound as well?

@@zsxdemon It may be more common in racers only because they get mixed with other fancier’s flocks. But all it takes is for one feral pigeon to mix with your flock and you could be in trouble. I would recommend vaccinating your high flyers. And btw, some day I may have to get some high flyers; they’re just too cool

How you make them fly ? I have racing pigeon 2 months old they don’t fly far

It took time to get them in the routine of loft flying. For the first few weeks it was almost embarrassing the way they just flew crazily around and not in a flock, landing in trees. But after a few weeks it finally starts to click for them and they fly together in a nice flock and then soon after they will start routing, or exploring. That’s when you’ll notice the time they spend in the air increase dramatically. Best wishes!

Are you using the same needle for every bird .?? Or a new syringe each time . ?

I use one needle until the vaccine in the syringe has been depleted. Once that happens, it is best not to reinsert the contaminated needle back into the stock solution of the vaccine. So if I have a new needle I will switch at that point. Using the same needle on multiple birds is no problem though. With the 3 ml syringe I used in this video I had enough total volume to vaccinate 12 birds at 0.25 ml dose with that one needle. If you only have one needle, dip the needle in alcohol and let it dry prior to reinserting it into the vaccine bottle. Hope that helps!

The main vaccinations for pigeons are paramyxovirus (PMV) and salmonella (paratyphoid). If you can find a local pigeon fancier to get a dose of one or both of these it would probably be wise. The vaccines come in 100 dose bottles and are kinda pricey, so it’s probably not worth it to purchase them for a single bird.

@@RFRP i do have a 4 in 1 powder you mix a teaspoon per gallon of water thats for pmv and other common illness.i just dont know how often to give to bird? also it says to remove water surces and give it this medicine water for 7 days but because my birds not sick should i just offer the med water in side dish WITH her normal drinking water dish on the side as well and how often should i do this? any input of a plan for prevention as the med packet says little and think instructions are for sick birds not prevention.thanks a bunch.

The 4 in 1 is a treatment for birds when they are sick and shouldn’t be given as a preventative.

Very hard to say what is going on. What do her droppings look like? I would guess paratyphoid/Salmonella or some virus (maybe pmv?). Isolate her from the rest of your birds right away. You could try a strong antibiotic (baytril/enrofloaxin). Best wishes for her recovery 🙏🏼

@@RFRP Thank you....dropping colour is white n little greenish ( not watery ) and I forgot to mention earlier that he is keep opening his mouth as if something is stuck and still coming and keep on eating n drinking but earlier he used to get scared of me and now he is letting me touch him & not reacting much n watching me n closing his eyes suddenly. Actually that pigeon is not my pet but he stays near my window since 3 years with his family & I'm feeding them since 3 years....he has two babies also around 2 months who still whistles.....I don't know what to do....waiting for morning to see how the situation is....now it's around 1.30 am in India....any advice please

That is a great question. I do not use a new syringe for each bird nor do I disinfect the needle between birds. That said, I do spray the surface of the skin with rubbing alcohol and that disinfects the area and maybe even the needle as it passes through the wet surface of the skin. I do replace the needle after 30-50 birds because it does become ever so slightly less sharp over time. Hope this helps!
