They make a foam filter specifically for water pickup. I'd recommend using that just in case you pick up any other junk along with water. In my experience at least, you're never sucking up perfectly clean water and a good amount of gunk gets stuck on the foam filter that may have otherwise blown through the vac motor which isn't good for it. You don't need the pump unless you're sending the water up vertically (e.g., out of a basement) and you don't have a sump pump. If you have a sump pump, roll the vac to the sump pump, remove the cap at the bottom side of the vac and quickly insert a sock over the hole if you want (as a dirt filter). Gravity works great! No extra water pump needed. ~ Isa, Tiny House Northeast

You can actually run the pump and vac at the same time which I did when my basement took on water - about as much as shown in your video. It would not work for a large amount of water or a body of water like a bathtub then as you indicate it would have to be a 2 step process.

@HomeOwnerRepair7 жыл бұрын

@fungoorstitch4 жыл бұрын
I could be mistaken, but I don't think the accessory pump is necessary. Should work if you just install a shutoff valve in a hole in the bottom of the shop vac basin and close it before starting the vac. Once incoming water fills the basin and submerges the valve, you should be able to simply open the value and allow the water to evacuate through a hose attached to the valve. The lid of the vac must always stay on during operation to maintain vacuum. The only problem you might encounter with this is if the basin fills faster than it empties, triggering the motor cut-off switch. To combat the issue, ensure your new valve and hose are larger than the intake. Also, ensure you use a heavy duty power cord, as a cheap one absolutely WILL burn up from really prolonged use in this manner. Either that or the vac will keep tripping its breaker. Bear in mind too that the life span of the shop vac will definitely be reduced.
@greenbackfunding4182 жыл бұрын
Yes, but location is the key factor here, in a basement you are lower than ground level so to use only gravity you would have to be higher than ground level or where ever you plan on dumping the water. If you are above ground level just open the valve at the bottom and let it flow, or connect a hose to run it down to street or just wheel it down there and open the valve. Basically location being lower than ground level in a basement is the only reason for a pump.

Thanks for your tutorial on how to suck out water using the water pump for your Ridgid wet dry vac. I have the exact same problem you have. My basement is flooded with 1" of water. However, I have a SHOP-VAC wet dry vacuum. I can't find a comparable instruction video similar to yours for the SHOP-VAC. Their website is horrible for any helpful information. Useless. All they want to do is sell you another vacuum. So far, the videos I've found using a Shop-Vac are incomplete, leave out details, don't go through all the steps in the procedure. Most of them show you how to suck up water with a hose, but none (so far) can properly explain how to use the water pump like you did. I used to be a technical trainer for digital electronics debugging, a field where small details and iron-clad logic are imperative. That's the way I work. So I can appreciate a logical presentation like yours. So you wouldn't know of an equivalent video to yours where a Shop-Vac is used with the water pump? I'll also keep searching. Thanks, - Fred

If the pond is deep you can use a transfer pump or a sump pump till they don't pick up water anymore and then finish up with a vac. I believe it will be much faster because you won' have to stop the vac and start the pump then stop the pump and start the vac and so on and so on. Get my drift.

@maycatyuiop5 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea! Legally you probably can't but some jurisdictions Allow it. All you would need to do is plumb the drain to your garden and possibly add a in line pump to it. Shouldn't be too hard although it may be difficult to access the drain
@NeverSuspects5 жыл бұрын
You could probably just use a hose and siphon most of the water out. With one end of the how kept lower then the other and the other end submerged in the tub pull the water from the lower drain to end by eaither using something to suck it and start the flow or just well.. sucking on it.. and once it starts to flow it will go as long as one end stays completely submerged and the other end is lower then the submerged side. gravity will do the rest.. Just like how people used to siphon gas out of older cars tanks.

Sometimes my backyard gets e lot of water. Can I use the pump while I'm using the vacuum. That way I can just vacum and it pumps the water out as I go?

Thank you. I just wish you had shown where the water went. I know you mentioned sump pump, but is that the big whole next to my sump pump, or the actual sump pump?
@HomeOwnerRepair4 жыл бұрын
You can toss it outside somewhere
@gailremp83894 жыл бұрын
Yes, like a French drain..I just put the hose down there in the water just goes away out that hole.

Can you use the vacuum to suck up water thr same time as the pump is on, pumping out water while you suck up water? Or do I have to do one first then the other?
@HomeOwnerRepair3 жыл бұрын
no because the pump pumps the water out too fast.

Can you run both the pump and the vaccum at the same time so it can eject the water as soon as it sucks it up

Did it work did u get an answer?
@HomeOwnerRepair Жыл бұрын
I tried this and the pump pumps the water out faster than the vacuum sucks it in.

This may seem like an odd question but... couldn't you forget the Ridgid pump and garden hose that leads to the sump pump, and just roll the shop vac over to the sump pump, open the spigot and let it drain?
@HomeOwnerRepair4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can just empty it if you wanted to

Could this pump push water uphill 8 feet? We use a wet dry ridgid 15 gallon vac to drain the last of a swimming pool for repairs and you are right about how heavy a full vac is this may save Us about 2 or 3 hours of Heavy grunt work
@HomeOwnerRepair5 жыл бұрын
It may be able to. It's pretty strong

How do you dry vac with it? Seems like everything was blowing out of blower port.
@HomeOwnerRepair10 ай бұрын
If you are dry vacuuming you should be running an air filter. Also make sure that the ball inside where the blower motor is is moving freely.
