How To Vastly Improve Your Lav Mic Audio...From Gross To Classy!

Here are my tips for improving your lav audio in any editing software! I’ve never liked the lav mic sound, I’ve tried lots of lav systems from brands like RØDE…but alas. I always find that it needs a lot of work to get it sounding better. I hope this helps!

Harv! Thank you for making this video. I tried to replicate it on Davinci Resolve 19, the software I use. However, I couldn't find equivalents for many features. The closest I found was the Voice Isolation preference, which effectively removes echo and reverb. Yet, it lacks the richness and bass in the voice that I would love, maybe I just need to upgrade my mic!

That Match EQ sounds really powerful. Would it ever make sense to use it against some audio source other than you? Say, pick some great sounding audiobook or narration that you like the presence of the talent on and then apply it to yourself? Btw, this isn't coming from a sound guy. Just a hobbyist musician that frequently needs to make software demo (non-pro) videos with narration for work.

Ooooh, that sounds like a very cool idea :) And even though all voices are different it might reveal some interesting results for further experimentation, kinda like applying the color look of one image to another, great idea :)

"we expect too much from these"... so true. We're buying an entire wireless mic kit for like $200 and then expect it to sound like a $2000 mic 😅

Great video :) Would love to see/hear your take on the DJI Mic 2, which I find to be very muffled sounding when worn on the chest, with a similar setup, but ditching the «make it sound like»-plugin, doing only manual/by ear adjustments :) I really like the sequence of steps you have here, with first the general cleanup and de-ess’er, then some comp for leveling out things, and only *then* doing the main sculpting of the sound before rounding it off and bringing thw levels up :) Gonna have a go at trying something similar on my Mic 2 audio in DaVinci Resolve this weekend, so thank you :)
