I've seen modern mates do worse with the "Newells" on KZbin, but I think MOST modern rigging experts are missing something vital, about WHAT the "Newells" were probably put there for in the first place, by the the "developers" of Hawaiian lures. Vinyl skirts, being light and supple, tend to "flattenize" without undergirding, and unless you've got a lot of flounder/flying-fish hybrids in your area, it was realized, by the most attentive, that that ain't much of a look in the water... and that something had to be done to counteract it. The solution was to kind of put stiffer hips and shoulders underneath the vinyl, for support, to keep the bottom and top strands from pushing up or down too much, and thus pushing the side strands out in the process, ("flattenizing"), when the lure is going up or down. So, I really think you might do better to put your side "Newells" on the "shoulders" instead of on the "midriff".

Everyone does it differently! This is how we do it for the fishermen who come in the store. Thanks for the info!
