Others from our tour waited up to two hours! We are very grateful for this video and would recommend this to others who are interested in going to the Louvre but have been put off by the long queue. Keep up the good work! My sister and I really enjoy your videos. XX

Isn't it crazy how people seem determined to get in that long line to enter through the main pyramid?! It's like they just love long lines! If a building is that big, you've got to assume it has more than one entrance!

I tried to follow the advice in this vid and still somehow managed to get lost in the Louvre. My sense of direction sucks. I was there for over 3 hours and I never found the way to get from section to section without returning to the pyramid to reorient myself. I'm sure pieces of my soul never made it out of the Louvre and are still trapped there right now.

I was lucky enough to study at the Ecole du Louvre, the most renown institute for History of art in France. We had a lot of lectures inside the museum, around the objects. The Metro entrance seemed to be the best to me. When I did the Louvre in 2005, I had a plan of what I wanted to see and planned to make several visits so I saw pretty much everything I wanted to see. I think the biggest piece of art there is the building itself. We're planning a visit for next year and I know it will be on the list and hope I can make it enjoyable for the rest of the group who have never been.

Ha-ha! You revealed the hushed Pont de Lions entrance. I used that entrance to visit often during my first time in Paris in 1975, it was a lifesaver and no one seemed to know about it. Great guide here to getting in without the major tourist hassles and planning to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of artifacts. The youth discount is available almost everywhere in the EU, but you need to ask for it and carry ID. Don't be put off by some museums that only discount to EU residents, they'll often extend the discount to others--including Americans--if the request is polite, includes a bit of local language (a "bonjour," or a "ya-sas" will open many doors and discounts as long as your children are standing with you and well-behaved). My last visit to the Louvre was bringing the family in 2004 and our daughter wanted to see the Mona Lisa, which was directly up the stairs from the Pont de Lions entrance, looks like she's been moved to a much larger space. It was the first Sunday free entrance and it took all of 5 minutes to cruise in the Pont de Lions entrance while there were mile-long lines around the plaza waiting to enter through the I.M. Pei pyramid.

How could you miss out Napoleon's apartments? They were the most spectacular part of the visit for me. I was at the Louvre from 2:30pm until it closed at six and managed to squeeze those in at the end in addition to most of everything else you explored (except Hammurabi's Code, which I couldn't find). I'm glad I did and my shattered legs held out for long enough to have a look.

Another nice video. I remember my first time in the Louvre, October 2014. I got there an hour before it opened w/my Museum Pass, 5th in line, headed straight to Mona Lisa when it opened, only about 10 of us in the room then I headed out. I just followed the signs/pictures of Mona Lisa. I spent about 45 minutes walking through sections with only myself & security in the area. I have a picture of me in front of a corridor connecting 7 rooms & it was only myself & security in each room. June 2016, I was 3rd in line & only me & security in front of Mona Lisa for about 5 minutes. Again, hit another part of the museum & had rooms to myself for a bit. Cant wait to head back in Aug/Sep 2018. Plan on seeing it during the late evenings that it is open during the week.

Jay, Enjoyed your mini/economy tour! I'll bet security, while scanning the exterior landscaping, discovered and removed the "threat". I have a hopefully diverting little story to relate. My wife and I, with our 14 month old and ~4 year old, took our "trip of a lifetime" in mid-May 1999 (no rain nor mosquitos). One week in Paris and a week in the Loire River Valley. We rented an apartment in the 11th arrondissement and saw EVERYTHING Paris had to offer (we were younger, well researched and determined)! One problem, however.....the George Pompidou, Musee d' Orsay, Sainte Chapelle among others, were on strike (the staffs) including, of course.....the Musee du Louve....now what? We were never going to be able to return! But, it was announced while we were still in Paris that they would open on the Thursday! Great, but everyone else that was on their trip of a lifetime would ALL be there that day too! We were clever little tourists and WE also figured out to take the subway (we had maps) to the Louvre underground exit and just sauntered in with ZERO wait. The line outside the Pyramid stretched on forever. We saw hours worth of iconic art....FABULOUS! The one thing that surprised us was how small the Mona Lisa was. One of our other little triumphs was obtaining food for us and two tiny tired kids! Just by chance on the second floor hidden just off of one the stairways was an uncrowded absolute most charming outdoor terrace overlooking the inner courtyard and the Pyramid especially on a sunny perfect day. The food and price was quite reasonable considering the ambiance. I have lots of other interesting happenings to describe about that trip, and your guided walk brought back many fond memories. Thanks so much! .

Have watched a lot of your KZbin channel. My wife and I visited Paris in mid-May '99 with our two children ~4yrs and 14 months for 7 days and 7 days in the Loire River Valley. While we were in Paris the Musee d'Orsy, San Chappelle, George Pampedou (being renovated) , Villanndry Chateau and gardens and the Louvre and others were on strike. They did open up the Louvre on the Thursday of that week so everyone on THEIR trip of a lifetime were there. We were sauve tourists and took the subway entrance underneath the Louvre and had NO waiting lines and walked right in as apposed to waiting 3hrs in the center court pyramid entrance. Among other interesting surprises was how small the the Mona Lisa portrait was. Another was finding on the second floor, a charming outdoor terrace restaurant overlooking the center courtyard Pyramid with no lines and warm sunlight l. We saw many of the iconic art works with our realistic viewing wish list and pre-planning. Please forgive my spelling mistakes, but it's late and I must "crash".

If you hate selfie sticks, you will really hate them after you go to the Louvre. When we were there, I think some tourists were on a personal mission to take a self in front of each and every piece of art. It's as if they had to prove that visited everything. It's an amazing museum, but I enjoyed the Musee D'Orsay more because it was less crowded when we went in the evening. Not sure if the Louvre is less crowded in the evening, but the lines in the morning were significant.

I went to London then Paris for a first anniversary trip in 1996. Stayed at the hotel du louvre. When you go to the Louvre pay the money to have lunch outdoors at the cafe marly. It’s pricey but it was full sunshine in that setting. Totally worth the money For the experience. We hit the louvre the dorsay and Picasso museums and giverny tour within four days. Don’t miss the Medici fountain either and the hot cocoa in the tullieries garden. After Paris I enjoy even more our art institute in Chicago. We also started by the Eurostar first class from London then climbing to the top of Notre dame at sunset for our first look. Love your videos.

My favorite is the Richelieu wing ,those renaissance statues are amazing, the Denon wing have some really great paintings by the various maestros but then when I got to visit The Prado in Madrid thats when I really was amazed by the paintings hanging on its walls. Visitors especially the first timers should allocate a whole day for their visit.

Greetings! Hands down to this secret guide. We arrived at 08:45 a.m. and the front of the Louvre has the longest queue, So we decided to follow the secret guide as what I called it and wallah! It was only us who actually who walked down that stairs. I observed workers being checked and there were like workers and few people. We already have our tickets and was 10th in line for the inspection. There was one couple though who went their way to ask the security and they were told to go out outside at the pyramid and was told that they prefer that they will go to that area. We did not follow and when it was opened we just went smoothly. I also noticed that not so many tourists start to explore the greek or earlier side and went directly to where Mona Lisa is located. (under construction) It was only us who was on that side of the Louvre. Thank you very much for the secret guide! I highly recommend this video.

I've been in the Louvre only 4 times. I do the tour by "avoid" large crowd game plan. When I see a huge group in front of me, I just moved on and come back to see the whatever that section later, and then either I'm alone in the room or just very few people at the same spot. It's less stress for me and I have more chances to go back and review the art pieces I really love.

I found a toolkit and knives a while back. Now that I know they belonged to a couple goddamned backpack-wearing pinko hippies, I don't feel so bad for taking them.

I visited the Louvre on somewhat of a short schedule and was able to find exactly what I was looking for which was all the famous sculptures (mona lisa, venus de milo, sphinx, winged nike of samothrace, etc) and then the Egyptian exhibit. It is HUGE and i know there were rooms in the Egyptian exhibit that I didnt get to. Planning for a 2021 summer trip currently and plan to spend at least 2 days visiting the Louvre.

Every time I visit this museum I am more impressed by the jewel box that is the palace than by the jewels it contains.

Thanks for the videos as always Jay ! Oh yeah ... where can i find some tips on what to do NYE ?

Once I had a coffee at the café under the arches near the entrance. As you said food and drink at the Louvre is pricey, but it's probably also the most amazing setting you'll ever experience.

Hiding the tool kit reminds me of being at the Petit Palais on Mother's Day. They wouldn't allow any plants or flowers inside and Mothers were carrying the flowers they had received from family. I went outside and "hid" the roses in plain sight in the flower gardens. They were still there when we left!

Went to the louvre last Month October 4 ,19 and bought my ticket online with my phone and use it to skip the lines outside and it was much cheaper with people with no ticket. Get in to see the famous Mona Lisa and a few other artifacts and loved it !

Thanks Jay for your tips, today we followed your direction to take the subway to Carousel/ Palais Royale station around noon, went straight to the Lourves entrance from the mall, waited in line less than 5min at the security, proceeded to the machine kiosk to get ticket, waited in line for less than 10min, and we are in! Considering today Mar 4th, 2020 is first full day after the Lourves closure from coronavirus strike for 3 days, we thought it would be crazy, but not so bad after all, some area are crowded like the Mona Lisa gallery, other areas are less crowdy. Beware some rooms were closed each day of the week, for example the Napoleon apartment is closed today on every Thursday

I watched this video in Sept. 2018, went to Paris in October. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now watching it again today, it's cool to revisit :-) But I spent NINE hours there and I did have a Le Cheeseburger for lunch. Went in with a plan of attack and successfully hit everything I wanted to see and then some. I'm so glad to have found you on youtube. LOVING the 20 in 20.

Great video. Just a quick correction for mesopotamian purists, at 8:22, the lamassu (bulls with humans heads and wings) come from Khorsabad, northern Irak, which is neither the place where the Hammurabi code was found (which is Suse, in today Iran) nor where it was first written (which is Babylon, near Bagdad). These two archeological pieces have little in common (except from being both very old, and from the Near East). In fact, about 1000 years and a whole civilisation separate these statues (built by the Assyrians around 700 BCE) and the code (built by the Babylonians around 1700 BCE).

Hey Jay! So I’m visiting Paris around May 10th-14th. This is possibly a long shot, but thought it would be fun if you could show me around the city a little bit! If not no worries. Love the videos man

Sorry-o - I don't do tours anymore. But I do have some friends who do if you need an introduction. And of course the bike tours with Bike About are WELL worth it. bit.ly/BikeAboutToursJay - they'll hook you up with one of my stickers if you let them know you're coming on my recommendation as well. I hope you have a blast while you're in Paris! (And I probably won't see followup comments as I don't get notifications for those, but you can reach out through my website if you want me to connect you with a guide)

I’ve never had any trouble getting in from the entrance out of the metro, into the mall, and right into the lobby at the center. Maybe I just haven’t hit that 10% yet. Also, don’t know if you mentioned it, the Paris Museum Pass includes the Louvre, and the skip the line privilege (although you still have to go through security). I also that Winged Victory is amazing! And, too many people miss the painting opposite the Mona Lisa called the Wedding of Cana, which is spectacular! If I remember correctly, the Coronation of Napoleon is said to be the largest painting in the Louvre.

Jay Swanson thank you SO SO much for doing this video!! No joke, when I saw the Mona Lisa I got goosebumps!! 👏 I know it's cliche, but my dream is to see Paris & La tour Eiffel, Arc de Triomphe, & the Louvre!! I speak intermediate French I learned in high school & college, but will want to be very fluent before my visit there. This was very helpful FFR for me to utilize when I come see Paris. Cheers!! 😊💓💖
