thanks for this video man. i’m a sophomore in college and i’ve completely wasted my chances on playing in high school. these past few months, i’ve gained such an interest in football and this is the most passionate i’ve ever felt about a sport. i know what i want to do, and that’s being a receiver of some sort, but i feel like i’d probably be outclassed at my university so my mind drifts to practicing on my kicking skills. i feel like no matter what i would do, i would be satisfied just to be able to play the sport

I tried get back in high school sophomore year but the school I was at did not have right helmet size(to tight)so my first game I got concussion and was kicked off the team for being gone to long but I hope that still have chance to play in college, I going to do semi pro before college so I can understand competition that college may give and get back into the sport. thanks for the video

That's great to have that reason "WHY" - but just know that if football isn't the path for you or doesn't work out, you can still fulfill that mission and purpose by doing something else. However, if you truly believe you have a lot of talent, potential, skill, work ethic, and LOVE football, then maybe that's an option to try now while you have the window to do it. Good luck my man - you'll figure it out.

I’ve been playing basketball and football for fun since I was in the 7th grade. The last 4 years I’ve been focusing on basketball but Recently I’ve had a huge surge of motivation to play football at the college level. I have the chance to play football at my HS next year but I probably won’t get on the field at all. Even then I think it would be a great experience to learn from the coaches and be around that environment. I just don’t know if I should put in as much work with football as I do with basketball considering how late I’m starting in the sport. Thanks for the video tho guys. If your true goal is college football then everything you're doing should be focused on that or you it's going to be very difficult to make it. Get clear on your goals and figure out what you really want and then adjust your actions to match those goals. I can't tell you if you should spend more time on one sport or another...and in high school you usually can do both, but you definitely should aim to figure out WHY you want the goal you are after, and then put actions in place to achieve that.

02Icy, excellent question! I would prepare to do the 40 yard dash and Pro Shuttle just in case. Your time to shine, however, is actually kicking/punting footballs. The decision to keep/not keep you will not be based on how fast you are, but rather how you do kicking. The decision will also depend on how many specialists they already have on the roster. What up man! Yes it's definitely possible - I would get on it soon thought because the eligibility clock is definitely ticking. Nick actually did exactly what you said and transferred from a smaller school and walked on. In terms of talking to coaches etc....you could try but I'd say more often that not they won't care enough to respond or give you the time of day if it's a massive D1 school. The route we both took was enrolling in our dream school, finding the open tryout dates, and preparing our ass off for those tryouts. That's the best route if talking to coaches doesn't work.

More realistic at smaller schools as a walk on, but you could also go play flag football or something. Unfortunately, if you've never played before, there's a time window on football careers so it's definitely very unlikely to pick it up later in life and succeed at the highest levels. With that said, there's tons of ways to get involved in the sport as a fan, coach, flag league, etc. If hell bent on playing, try a smaller school and reach out to a bunch of coaches to figure out when tryouts are and go give it a shot

You'll want to double check on your eligibility - but you should have a year or so left to do it. Just need to enroll in Arizona full time (12+ credit hours), and then figure out the tryout date and go perform! In terms of tips and advice, looking muscular from your fitness passion is a bonus, but focus HEAVILY on the 40 yard dash and the shuttle...they judge those to the most - so start tailoring your training to incorporate more athletic movements and a lot of field work.

I had to drop out of high school on my very first day. Some bad stuff happened: lost our house, car; it was not a fun situation. I got into football during what would been my Sophomore year. My "why" factor was the fact that I learned that I had a talent for throwing and catching, and it was something I fell in love with! So I started to study film, learn the mechanics of throwing, and even had a buddy teach me some blocking drills (which I was decent at). I’ll def ask when I get into the university I’m going too, but still curious
@clayraterman2 жыл бұрын
Hmm I'm not sure about dual enrollment. I'm *almost* positive that it shouldn't affect the 4 playing years because I imagine you aren't enrolled FULL time as a student in college. Your eligibility clock starts when you enroll in 12+ credit hours at a 4 year university I believe. Can always check when you get there though

I was hoping this video would be addressed more from a perspective of '"I played other sports in HS and not football so I don't have experience playing the game...but if I have the requisite physical metrics would I be able to tryout and make a team based off those physical qualities alone?" If the tryout is just combine drills then perhaps football playing experience isn't really what coaches are seeking from walk-ons? Basically they just need some big athletic bodies that can run fast and hit hard and take a hit? Thanks for the videos!
@clayraterman4 жыл бұрын
Correct, from my experience, they are looking for really good athletes (that have a lot of potential), or kids who can run well or will be good practice players. If you don't have football experience and have played other sports and are a good athlete and perform well at the drills, you still have a good shot. Generally they won't even know your experience level IN football at just an open tryout.
@drewsus4 жыл бұрын
@@clayraterman Thanks, Clay. Do you think it's easier to walk-on at a large private university (ie., Vandy or USC) vs a state school like OSU? I feel like the higher tuition costs would keep a lot of really good players (who could possibly get a ride to a lower level school) away from the private universities thus making it easier to grab a roster spot?
@clayraterman4 жыл бұрын

I'm in a weird spot. Never played, and I want to try out for nose tackle at a high-tier D2 school. I love watching film and have been working hard learning mechanics, but I know my 5' 10 heavy frame (over 300 pounds), currently slow speed (not marking a 40 time until I get my bearings), and no experience will be a huge downside. I'm thinking of mostly working with pass rush technique, since that will be something I can film and give the coaches at the tryout. How should I go about it since I don't have tackling dummies to work with?
@clayraterman4 жыл бұрын
They don't really care about film! It's mainly about how you perform at the tryout itself. Prepare hard for all of the tryout drills, the football stuff typically comes into play later on...they want athletes first

I’ve never played pad tackle football but I’m a decent athlete (6’4- 177lb) and I know the game well. I’ve played a lot of back yard football and even flag football through middle school. I think I know the answer but there’s basically no chance of me walking on to play at a small college right? If there is a small chance, how would I go about doing it? Thanks. Ps... I have pretty strong/long legs too. Maybe even just getting on as a Kicker/Punter?
@clayraterman4 жыл бұрын
If you enroll in college and show up a tryout, train hard, and learn the game I don't see why there's not a "chance"! Don't count yourself out before the journey even started. But yes lack of experience will make it more difficult, if you can play flag or in some league that would likely help.

Ik this video was made a long time ago but I have very specific circumstances and i'd appreciate it if you could tell me how realistic I am being because I really love football. I was short and stocky my freshman year in hs so i played as a guard, and because of some personal stuff, like moving and moving back, mental health and shit I couldn't play my sophomore or junior years. Now I'm taller (barely over 6 foot) and I WAS more athletic but I was stupid and got into a nasty accident and my legs were destroyed recently (bones broken, ligaments torn, multiple grade 3 sprains, etc.) I won't recover enough to even walk until mid-December 2025 when I'll be a senior in hs, and even then, my athleticism and explosiveness will be capped for up to three years. I really want to work past that. If I slowly build my legs up and train as a mainly pocket passing QB from December to August would I even have a chance at least at an FCS level? D2 or D3? Also forgot to add my hand size (span) is only 8.5 inches, so that's another thing that would work against me. I'd appreciate realistic feedback or advice. Thanks.

giving me your stats and stuff doesnt help with anything - I have no idea if you could or could not do it. Its up for you to go try if its something you want to do. You might fail who knows. Idk whats realistic but you're giving yourself plenty of excuses right off the rip. Either try or don't....or pick a new goal. Either way whatever you go after will be a shit ton of hard work with no guarantee of success and you gotta believe in yourself to even start the process. For the most part! Usually if there's an open tryout the only requirements are that you are enrolled 12+ credit hours at the university and that you have NCAA eligibility left. @@theincrediblehulk5797 lol how am I supposed to answer that...lift what? what position, what lift, what weight are you, how old....lift as much as you can - there's not like a number that coaches will be like do this or you're out. Don't be weak and train super hard. If you make a team you will lift with their coaches and they will assign you goals to hit to get better. If you're looking for a ballpark you could look up what other average college athletes or NFL combine people lift for certain things but everyone's different

As long as you have the ncaa eligibility left then age doesn't matter
