The humour in this vid was fantastic. Timed to perfection! Would expect nothing less from you, I suppose haha

Love the videos jeff. In my opinion i feel like the drummers need to bring energy to the stage and showmanship. And I feel like stick tricks is one way doing that. But of course playing in time always comes first
@JeffRandallDrumming3 жыл бұрын
I totally respect it man! It’s kind of genre-specific for me these days. If I see a metal drummer using them, I’m all about it. If I see more of a pocket drummer using them, it just looks a little off… Know what I mean?
@-ajms-3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffRandallDrumming that's a very good point and I do agree jeff. as I am a metal drummer myself and I do in use stick tricks when I play but it's so impressive too see a pocket drummer show off a great drum groove and fills with good technique.

Thanks for this! I don’t have drum friends so this is a huge help - love how you incorporated it as a warm up - brilliant

I call them cafeteria moves or drum line flash - but it is impression in retrospect when I see it in the set and it looks like magic. Makes me feel insecure now since I too thought 'oh well I'll just learn how to play the kit as best I can'.. and then I tried to twirl with my left hand and discovered MORE imbalance and stiff movement .. even after Gary Chester workouts of being amedextrous on the kit.. .. then back to the psychological debate with myself.. do I need to go there since it's not even doing anything with the kit ? Cheers bro good video it was 'well balanced'.
@SPINNINGMYWHEELS77717 күн бұрын
the whip I learned with chopsticks long before I learned how to drum - I never even considered it a trick but people would point out when I did it 'naturally' when drumming.. I didn't even know I was doing it .

I used to think the helicopter went to the pinky and that's when I gave up until your video today and realized it loops back from the ring.

Interesting; I propel the "Classic" with my middle finger instead of my index. Oh, wait, I think I might twirl my sticks backwards. Hmmm...

Why would stick tricks not be fun or cool? It's your instrument, it's the tools you use. You should be able to do anything you want with them and be good at everything.

As Joe Morello said in his instructional video: stick tricks don’t sound very good. (Paraphrasing)

Stick tricks are for goofing around and showing off. I’d never do it during a performance, too much to go wrong. Use them sparingly.
@simonl17852 жыл бұрын
Never mind the stick tricks surely the proof of the drummers skills is in the playing Youre not twirlling a baton

have only been playing for 5 years and im not that good of a drummer but stick tricks are really important XD

I've tried the classic one for ages, but it doesn't come out as it should. I can only do the helicopter one time, one lap, but never in a playing sitiation. It looks cool, and I want to incorporate it in my drumming, but no use..
@JeffRandallDrumming3 жыл бұрын
Getting the helicopter to flow continuously took me FOREVER. It actually takes a good bit of hand strength to pull off. Give it time dude!
@PezrulezHaakon3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffRandallDrumming Yes I've noticed that the hand and fingers get sore quickly. I have a friend that in his school years managed to do that extremly quick with his pen or pencil. He did it back and forward as he pleased. That looked really cool. I'm not even close to having that motor funktion.

Not gonna lie stick tricks kinda piss me off. Maybe not them in itself but being shamed by time-deaf guitarists for not knowing any gets old haha. Good points though, I'm always looking for ways to practice when im in idle situations.

Definitely felt you on the "actually playing the drums with them" part. Thats what I always tell them haha.

I’ve never been good at this stuff, left hand is atrocious. This takes practice too but your breakdown shedded some light on it. For anyone that reads this, if you check out Zoltan Chaney, you’ll enjoy. He does more stuff than playing. I watch him just because some of the stuff he thinks to do has never crossed my mind…ever. The entertainment value is off the charts.
@robertthompson55683 жыл бұрын
I checked out that Zoltan Chaney...lol! Wow man!!! I'm no fan of that "80s spandex music" but that dude is definitely taking showmanship to level 11...💥😆 (When he kicked the cymbal I had to smile)

Have you ever created a pulse that can easily be laid down and played without thinking about it? I did. It’s a crooked RLRRLRL AND THEN I VAN MORRISON THE SHIT OUT OF IT. I miss the last note of that paradittle but when I chop it up it sounds like a Southern jazz groove. I wanna learn those Texas shuffles as well. God drums are great!!!

In penspinning you would call the tricks Charge FL T1 (Fingerless Charge between thumb and index finger), Charge 12 (normal Charge between index and middle finger) and Fingerpass.

Wait, just looked it up again. The third trick is actually called Drummer/Gunman.

haha! you present your videos very well i enjoy them a lot! it definitely goes much deeper than this in terms of what you can do but i still liked the video even tho 3 tricks doesnt scratch the surface of stick tricking you have good principles in terms of its more important to sound good and i really loved that you use them as a warm up for your hands and arms i never really thought of it like that it takes time to build strength and muscle memory and keeping ambidexterity but if you really find it interesting youll learn over time i started 2 years ago after seeing some superdrummers vids they have a lot to offer people who want to get way more into stick tricks i love to do stick tricks because its a flow art and i find such cool ways to do tricks sometimes you come up with something that is incredibly entertaining so you end up practicing your butt off and it becomes second nature then on to the next trick and before you know it you have a repetoire of moves you can use while playing or not
