How to wash a Jersey - Hand washing and Washing Machine Methods

In this video I'm going to go over how to wash a jersey using two different methods. The first is washing a jersey by hand and the second is washing a jersey in a washing machine. In addition, I'll cover how to pre treat a jersey.

I'm glad someone finally showed this. I have read about others doing this, but they never say how to do it. I have used soap water and a toothbrush to clean the sweatband of some hats, but never tried to do that on a larger and different configured article.

@@jersey_jaguar It worked out well. But the sweatband wasn't too bad to begin with. I wish manufacturers would stop using white sweatbands. But I noticed something when washing other clothes. Can those detergent gel packs remove color if the packs aren't left in the bottom of the washer? I noticed some of my shirts have random faded spots. Or does it not matter where those packs are placed? And maybe the powder detergent I sometimes use is doing it?

I wash my hockey jerseys inside out one per load, wash them cold, and on delicate. Once it is done, I removed it from the washer immediately and then put them outside out then hang it to dry by putting it on the hanger hanging to dry inside my home.

I used good technique to hand wash my stitched nfl jersey and it worked perfectly. I used my hands to gently scrub stains with o I clean and they came right out. Thank you!

Great video. I have had oxy clean ready to go. But finally hyped myself up to actually clean my old CCM Carolina hurricanes jersey. It’s covered in signatures so hopefully those make it through. Another video I have seen says it’s a coin flip on signatures. Especially if they are not on the crest.

Much appreciated! For signatures: Don't use hot water or even warm. Don't apply soap directly on them if your trying to keep them in tact. Spot clean the stained areas by hand cold water and you should be fine. For removing signatures: I'll have a video by next week. Removing them is time consuming but can be done.

I forgot to come back and update. Pretreated all the white areas with oxyclean laundry stain pretreat. I used 3/4 of a scoop of oxyclean clean for a standard double sink full of water. Only filled One side. I soaked for 10 minutes then changed water and added oxyclean again soaking for about an hour. Agitated the jersey half way through. Jersey looks incredible. The white stripes even around the neck are very bright white. All stains no matter how old gone. Cold water seemed to keep signatures in tact for the most part. Signatures on the crest are fine. Silver sharpie signatures on the black parts of the crest faded (cost of doing business). Signatures on the jersey fabric itself only faded where a lighter sharpie stroke were made. Hope this comment helps out some people

What about yellowing. I have a couple old 49ers white jerseys that have that yellowing from age

Hey Emilio thanks for the inquiry. Yellowing is tricky. If its yellowing from sweat, dirt, or dust that's collected over the years you can get it out. Unfortunately if its from oxidation that has occurred over time, you wont be able to get it out fully if at all. The oxidation process causes fading and or discoloration within the fibers of the jersey material. You can try a oxiclean bath soak then wash the jersey as normal. It helps but won't fully reverse the yellowing. Here's a link to the oxiclean. You can also try to soak it in baking soda. Do you have any recommendations on mending some numbers that are already peeling? It's an 03/04 Manchester United jersey with suede lettering. I assume there's some sort of fabric glue that exists for this but I want to make sure I get something that'll hold up.

I would try to find someone with a heat press and try having it repressed. You can also try some 3m spray adhesive and a iron. The heat press is a more sound choice I would say

Yep. Same technique. Always start with cold water and work you way up in temperature to make sure it doesn't bleed

Hey thanks for watching. Hot dog stains aren't that bad if it's the hotdog or ketchup. If it's mustard it's much harder as it has tumeric in it which stains yellow. Best bet use the methods in This video but soak it in a oxiclean bath for a few hours to a day first. Always test the jersey first. If you have any other questions along the way, don't hesitate to ask.

@@waxdoe115 yes if you soak it in the powder for a extended time then use a stain remover. There's one by carbona you can find at Walmart specifically for ketchup and mustard. Grease stains are a little more tricky, I would use a degreaser .but again always test the jersey first
