Good video for those looking for extreme fades, and very good points made about not overstressing the washing aspect. Personally I don't like this kind of extreme fading, I think they look artificial and just plain over the top, but then again, I grew up wearing jeans in the '60s and 70s and they were good quality and faded naturally, because as a kid and teenager we didn't own multiple pairs, most people had one pair they would wear until it got very worn, and then you'd buy a new pair to overlap for a while so you had a good pair to wear when you needed to look less casual, and the heavily worn pair that was supremely comfortable that would be used for hacking around, playing outside, doing chores, etc. The thing I find the most paradoxical these days with many denim heads is that they either have so many pairs they never get to the well-worn stage, and that the search for extreme fades means that the jeans are washed so rarely they start to blow out and tear long before the denim has faded overall and become worn to that soft velvety stage that is impossible to fake and that only lasts a few months before the jeans start to fall apart. I rarely see people these days with a really nice pair of faded worn jeans, they either are super dark, artificially faded, or have these modern extreme fades that lack the elegance and subtlety of a naturally faded and worn pair that have got that way from natural use and occasional but not excessively rare washing.

To be honest I won't need a pair of jeans for a few years, I just bought one of the last pairs of the Lee 101 1950's LHT, on sale no less, with a fairly new pair of 101Z and a few my older faded N&F and Levis Vintage 501s I'm good for a while. I often cheat by buying nice used jeans for 1/3 or less new value . This way I can pick the fade etc and get a nice pair already broke in some..Probably 1/3 of my jeans I got like this.But you're correct about volume .I probably have 50 pairs pant or more but partly because I've worn the same size for 40 years.

I put my selvedge jeans inside out through a warm wash with vinegar and gentle dry with tennis balls. two times. Yes also with a spin cycle. Worked like a charm. No weird creases, just loosened up the fabric so I can actually wear them. Having a high quality washer and dryer helps a great deal.

Me too. I spin wash all my selvedge, but I hang dry. The whole point of jeans is that they're supposed to be rugged, no hassle pants. The dudes who obsess over them are funny to me. I did have one pair of 3sixteens that I didn't wash enough though and they totally fell apart

One of the things I've learned along my 'denim journey' is how conditioned we are to constantly wash our clothes. As you said, hanging clothes out in the sun with a nice breeze is a severely underrated way to save time, wear and tear on your garments, and of course gallons and gallons of water. Great vid and tips for us all. Pretty cool you even got a special guest in the comments section! 🤙

Epic vid again Fjorde. Working on a pair of Japanese Selvedge Nudies right now, but will buy a pair of either IH or PBJs...if you could choose one pair to love and start a fading process on, what would you go for? Utility is a consideration too.

Personal experience and many anecdotes I have heard is that IH are slower to fade but of course YMMV
@Fjorde2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. 🙏 I would highly recommend IH for utility. PBJ has some really really nice fabrics if that’s what you are after. But if you get a pair of IH in your favorite cut… that’s a great first pair. I’d recommend 25oz as the best weight for fading, but thats really heavy. Like, they will stand up on their own like a cardboard box. Try something in the 18oz range. The IH-777S-19L is a great pair of you like a tapered jean cut. 👊👊👊

My machine in the USA is not great for this; even if I stop it before the spin cycle, those lines can still happen. Very annoying. I just washed some 21oz unbranded brand and I got those lines, BUT, since I had turned them inside out, the effect was minimal. May not be visible in the long run. Not too worried about it but I would be very careful with heavier weights since they get stuck in the same position in the machine and repeated movement keeps hitting the same spots over and over.

Something I’ve been looking for an answer to, is after hand washing the jeans are gonna be totally saturated, like dripping, is there anything I can do about that? I don’t want to wring them out or anything because I know that’s not good for them, but I also ideally don’t want them to take like days to dry and id like to take any precaution to avoid a mildewy smell forming from being wet for too long
@Bixnoodle Жыл бұрын
What I used to do is lay them between two towels and walk on them to swish the water out. Now I just air dry them outside. It takes about 12 hours to fully dry. You can also just put it on a spin cycle which rings all the water out
