Literally just watch Bakemonogatari. There is no debate whatsoever that that's where you start. After 2 episodes you'll know if you're interested, after 5 you'll know if you're fascinated, and after 15 you'll know if you're in love. Then novel order for the rest of the series. Anime order is the same as novel order with 3 exceptions (out of 18) that were only out of order because of production issues. There is no reason to not watch in novel order.

Most people agree it's either anime release order or novel release order, the difference being mostly when you watch the movies. I recommend novel release order since that's the closest way to how the author intended the story to be experienced and it handles mystery very well.

I watched it recently with release order. If you enjoy watching a series that starts with a big piece of paper with lots of holes in it and will later be filled up as the series goes on, I highly recommend to watch it according to release order. So you start with lots of questions and mysteries that later will be answered as you go through it.

@@Zo_young_14 well for 1st time watcher i recommend you to do it in this order : Bakemonogatari Kizumonogatari Nisemonogatari Nekomonogatari (kuro) Monogatari 2nd season Hanamonogatari Tsukimonogatari Owarimonogatari Koyomimonogatari Owarimonogatari season 2 Zoku owarimonogatari Well kizumonogatari is a movie which is split into 3 parts and it's a prequel of why oddities happen. But it's best to watch after bakemonogatari so that you won't get confused.

Ok. lets get this straight. You should NEVER watch Monogatari in Chronological order. The story is not meant to be told that way. You are meant to jump to different parts of the time line. Also how is LN release order only important on a rewatch? Thats literally the order that the story was written in. therefor, it is by far the best watch order. The only reason the anime release order is slightly altered is because of production.

@Tsunami Gómez Díaz So many people say to wait to watch the Kizumonogatari films till very late. Their excuse is that they didnt come out till 2016/17. But these idiots dont realize that the films were green lit for production in 2010, after Bakemonogatari finished and before Nisemonogatari even came out. They were decided to be made into movies, and had a completely unique art style and animation compared to the TV seasons. It was also push back at a point. The films are meant to be watched after Bake.

Actually koyomimonogatari can't be skipped, there are minor details and plot details that come later but it's mainly the last episode that is the main plot. Though you should watch all of them as most are fun and give a little nostalgia as they are set out all troughout the series

I think the best order is: Bakemonogatari Kizumonogatri Nisemonogatari Nekomonogatari Kuro Monogatari Series second season Hanamonogatari Tsukimonogatari Owarimonogatari S1 Koyomimonogatari Owarimonogatari s2 Zoku Owarimonogatari That's the order I've been seeing alot new comers to Monogatari watch it in recently, and it's the best order in my opinion, since Kizu is right after Bake like Shaft originally planned it to be, it provides context for Shinobu's and Araragi's relationship in Nise, it avoids the obnoxious stopping through 1 series and start another then coming back that semi-chronological has.

I personally don't recommend to watch it in chronological/semi chronogical order, but in anime release order, that means watch Kizu after owari. Why? Because: Kizu has a unique style, it's completely different to the other series. And it's like a very enjoyable break to the series; You understand more. Like, why, in the films, Araragi looked away when Hanekawa said that she was studying math, and the reason why Araragi says that he doesn't need friends. These two scenes had an huge impact to me, because I knew the story behind them. Those details makes the show, and expecially Kizu, more enjoyable.

Here’s what I did/recommend: 1. Watch Bakemonogatari (to appreciate and understand the uniqueness of every design/cinematic choice) 2. Just read the goddamn Light Novels 3. Go back (optional) and watch some seasons or just everything of Monogatari in Anime format. I watched bakemonogatari then read the light novels then read kizumonogatari then watched the trilogy of films and so on and so on. i cant say im a fan of this whole shuffling around episodes. starting monogatari second season at episode 7 felt wrong, like cheating. I agree with watching kizu early (i watched after bake) but personally i will watch mono 2nd season from 1 to 26. in the end i decided to go with: bake>kizu>nise>neko>mono 2nd > owari> tsuki> >owari 2nd>hana>koyomi im half way mono 2nd and i feel pretty happy so far. ps: i actually went neko before nise but i kinda regret it now. edit: i ended up watching hana koyomi on release order but i wished i watched them on light novel order.

OMG i've been doing this wrong, ok so about 4 years ago i watched Owarimonogatari the first few episode, but i dropped it because i got vertigo watching that anime, too many colors and flashy things in the room i just couldn't watch it. then 2 years later i discovered Kizumonogatari the movies, i just watch it because it has good score. now after 2 years i discovered bakemonogatari from top anime list in MAL, the first few minutes watching it i feel deja vu, i couldn't put finger on it so i kept watching until the main character mention about he was a vampire then turned back into human. Then i remember i watched something like that. There's a whole series about this franchise that i didn't know about and it's more complicated then i imagined. damn i don't know if I should continue, feel like a lot to catch up T_T

I just started watching bakemonogatari and luckily, I put my full attention to the first series when I began it (currently on episode 6 ideally, I could've been through more episodes by now, but I have been researching and frying my brain to better understand how I should watch this, should've just read the comments first). I had no idea that the franchise was this huge I just stumbled upon the other monogataris whilst reading the comment sections in Crunchyroll. I was a little stood back on the idea of watching all of this at once, but now I am really interested.

Watching series in chronological order killing most of story and character grow. And you call "semi-chronological" better for first timers? I think they drop this the moment they need to just from 1 season to another to watch few eps and go back again. It's more confusing than anime itself. This anime is meant to be watching like it was released. There is many foreshadowing and retrospection in it, so structure of story is just great when you watch it like this.

I highly recommend that you watch it in the anime release order with one main difference. Swap Kizumonogatari 1,2 and 3 and Koyomimonogatari. Koyomimonogatari ends on a cliffhanger that ties into Owari Second Season. Make sure you watch Koyomi because it is important. Also, don’t do the Chronological or Semi-Chronological order. Just don’t.

I really just wanted to see the relationship buildup between hitagi and araragi because it was so intresting,but it turns out the anime doesn't really show the buildup overtime, I never really got to see Araragi and Hitagi ever hang out together other in the series Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatar.

why is this always such a big debate... honestly i thought it was common knowledge that the best order (at least for newcomers) is: bake kizu nise neko:Kuro SS 1-11 hana SS 12-26 tsuki owari 1 koyomi owari 2 Zoku owari that's the way the novels are (with the exception of Koyomimonogatari, but that leads right into owari 2 anyways) any confusion while watching it in that order should be intended confusion. Once you've watched it all, do whatever you want. Edit: so yeah basically release order, but kizu belongs after bake and hana in the middle of SS

Watching the Anime release order would be one hell of a ride, so its highly recommended. With a minor change that watch Hanamonogatari after Zokumonogatari bcoz it literally spoils the future events of rest of series.

I know most people watched Monogatari in the Airing order but there are many things wrong with the Anime order. There was a vision of a meta narrative in mind when NisioIsin wrote the novels. There is a reason why each arc comes after or before the ones around it. You can't adapt it faithfully but change the order around. Considering Shaft adapts the novels very faithfully, the Airing order runs into a lot of issues. Why the order matters is because Monogatari is a series is not a plot focused one. It is focused more on the characters. This is why it works non-chronologically. Also it is a mystery series. The Semi-Chronological order you mention takes away this aspect of the story. There is no reason to mess with the meta when there are only superficial benefits and the downsides are much more significant. There are no downsides to the LN order that do not exist in any other order. But there are many downsides to other orders that are non-existant in the LN order. The Anime Order was never the order in which Shaft wanted to adapt Monogatari. Kizumonogatari was supposed to be aired in 2012 after Bake (there is even a low quality upload of the old trailer on YT). {Hanamonogatari was supposed to be aired along wth the rest of Monogatari Second Season in the LN order. Unfortunately Shaft ad production issues. They had the whole thing adapted but didn't have enough episode slots to air the whole of Hana. So they decided to air Hana separately as it occurs after all the Monogatari SS arcs chronologically} - the reason wasn't production issues but strict episode counts in Japan, check edit for more details. In place of the left over episode slots, they decided to air recap episodes. They conducted a poll for what the fans wanted to be recapped (obviously the fans voted for toothbrush!!). Now the problems I have with the Airing order: (Spoiler free Summary) Monogatari Series is a story that isn't told in a chronological order but each installment has hints and foreshadowings for the next installments. So sometimes events that occur in the future are shown before and foreshadow some events that occur before it. The viewer/reader has to piece things together and solve the mystery along with the characters. Why I prefer this order over the airing order is because even though the airing order keeps the non-chronological storytelling, some of the foreshadowing aren't conveyed at all. Also due to the placement of certaing installments in a different portion of the series, a lot of context for certain events is lost. This creates a lot of confusion. Aother issue that existst in the Airing order is that the development of certain characters are hampered. A common argument made in favor of the airing order is that by delayng certain installments more mystery is created regarding the events, but one must keep in mind that confusion doesn't equal mystery. The anime basically expects you to already know the characters. As for the LN, I agree with NisioIsin but Kizu is very different from the rest of the novels in terms of story. It is way more plot focussed, way more fast-paced, way more dramatic and way more action heavy. People who stat with Kizu might have a completely wrong opinion of the series and might be turned off by the slow pace of Bake. I'm sorry for acting like the typical elitist asshole who will attack anyone who doesn't agree with him. But the problem is that almost any order that isn't the LN order messes up very badly because of the meta narrative that exists throughout. I think newcomers should always be advised to watch it in the LN order and then consider which order they personally like better, because that was the order the story was inteded to be told in. Edit: The reason for Hana's delay is slightly different. In Japan they have strict limits on the number of episodes which a season can have. For a two cour season the limit is 26 eps. With Hana the series was 28 eps, instead they had to release Hana separately and make the Second Season a 26 ep season with 3 recap episodes as it is much more practical.

I always recommend Kizu after Owari, then Koyomi, and Owari2............. I don't know I think it links very well with how Owari ends. I think that the way the anime is done, Kizu could be watched at any point in time, but it fits better after Baku or after Owari.

Some different, some similar to each other, an some similar but eith slight changes. I may just say fuck it an Russian Roulette pick one of them just to watch it already. It's because of the different orders of things. Like how the guy somewhat states in this video. Like release order of thr mangas/light novels, the chronological order of the mangas/light novels, the semi chronological order of the manga. Those orders go same for the anime itself. It's crazy!

​ Joe The Juggalo The way I watched it was the anime release order BUT I watched the Kizumonogatari movies right after bakemonogatari and then continued with the anime release order. I found it cleared everything up about certain characters and it helps with understanding some conversations in the arcs after the first season while keeping some aspects of mystery in the later arcs and it made it more enjoyable, at least for me.

We don't know if he'll continued thee novels, he just might because that's what he's been doing: finishing a season or novel volume saying this one is the last and then just writing more, and more, and more. Shaft has said they'll continue adapting so long as the author keep writing, but we have yet to see news for Orokamonogatari from the Off Season novels.
