This device is great it works for idrive 8 or 7 but note you NEED a active 4G nano sim card for this to function. BMW uses wifi to connect to apple carplay/ android auto which is why you can't use your mobile hotspot in this matter or use both simultaneously.

Any update on what is going on with the wifi? After connecting it to the car as best I can tell there is no WiFi to connect to internet from. Several other people in this thread are reporting the same issue. I'm going to return it if I can't figure out what is going on.

Because it connects to bmw wirelessly it does not seem to support carplay/android auto function. It uses the cars carplay function to connect and show its own android interface

you need a sim card to get to the internet. it wont connect to a phone’s hotspot so youll need to add a data plan like $20 a month

I purchased this device and unfortunately it does not have Carplay and also does not have wifi. i've updated the firmware several times but no solution yet provided. also it is laggy. i've been promissed by a firmware to update and fix the issues and operate the carplay as well. but not yet. if any could help please.

Just a general comment for everyone i see lots of questions and i know the answers 1) does this have wifi? Ans) this has wifi but it will use it to connect to the “wireless” carplay of the bmw wifi and therefore you cannot use the Box wifi since it is needed to connect to the car. That is also a reason you need sim card. Because if car connects wifi with the device you cannot use your phones hotspot to give the device internet. 2) how do you connect this? Ans) all you need to do is give this device power and sim card. Then go to your BMW add device settings and it should show you the device. Then just add it like a phone. Once done you will see the screen shown in the video. 3) is it possible to use this with a USB wired carplay system? Ans) I dont think so because the wifi is there to connect to the wireless CarPlay not wired carplay but i could be wrong. Last but not least. Dont use it while driving.

the port is for power. It connect with the wifi and bluetooth of your car just like with your phone. So to have it work you have to buy a data sim to put it in the device

This will work with I4, all you have to do is plug in the power. Go to add device and then add this device and it will display the same screen as the video. I believe this one might be laggy but if you are patient then you can enjoy videos while charging. I have idrive8 too so its a nice screen to watch on 😀

This device is not what you receive. You get a box that does not support carplay or android auto or mirrorlink. These are shown here. You can only use the android apps and you cannot connect your phone to the box for carplay etc. Also the box does not support apple music or apple tv app from play store. This is false advertising! Do not buy!
