Another awesome and informative video, Ana. For my climate here when it comes to watering less is best, and it’s much easier to bring a cactus back from dehydration than it is from rot. CAM is definitely an important thing, ever since I found out about that and been watering my plants at night it didn’t take long to see a difference with the plants and their overall health. Thank you for the mention 😊 And thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful Sunday from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜☕️

I like to bottom water my cactuses and succulents. That way they get a good drink and take as much as they need and I don't have to waste time going back and forth to water until they are no longer thirsty. I also find this helps with keeping pests like fungus gnats away. I grow indoors though as I live in Minnesota. Great video! Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks with us!

As usual, I am learning so much from you, the expert, and my cacti agree. You are the best. Across the valley it has been extremely hot. We are on a well, so no chlorine to worry about. pH I have never tested, did not know about this. Will get the meter from Home Depot today. The only right thing that I have been doing is digging into the soil and if it is dry, saturate the soil like you do, about once per week to 10 days in the summer. When we get showers here, the cacti in the ground get a soaking, so this should not be a problem. Thank you so much!

That was an interesting tip to adjust the ph of tap water. I’ve been buying ph kits, bottled water, and just ordered ammonium sulphate to reduce my water’s ph. I have only a small collection of cacti, aroids , and haworthia so it’s not a big inconvenience to use distilled water. But I liked your method of saving water aside and letting the chlorine evaporate . Half of that bucket would be enough to soak my group of cacti and some of my other patio plants.

Enjoyed!😊👍🏜☀️🏜☀️🏜☀️ I do the same thing😄 I give little water then pour again to go right through... I use 2.5 litres of water per shelf so my pump sprayer holds 5 litres so I can do 2 shelves each sitting. I have to do each entire shelf rack on different days as I use water just from my dehumidifier so have to pour out the water and store it until my pump sprayer is full. But I don't mind tap water for my Ariocarpus, Lophophora or Astrophytums as they're not bothered 🤣 so in case of no water left I use tap water for those cactus. Loved the advert you did for the hose... that was really well done!👍Your video was very informative 😀🌵🏜☀️🌵🏜☀️

Hi thanks for the info. Also most tap water uses chloramines or sometimes ammonia now, which doesn't evaporate. They stopped using chlorine because it evaporates, making it unstable sterilization. You can aquarium dechlorinator like seachem prime which with a few drops neutralize all of those chemicals instantly, just shake the bucket for a few seconds.

Two or three times a week seems like a lot… but I’m used to cactus in ground. Not in relatively small pots. I’ve never watered mine that much in Phoenix. I will have to play around with this as I’m starting to keep them in pots.
@CactusCaffeine

I also have cactus planted in the ground. Those I water only once a week. But for the ones in small terracotta pots, I water more. They dry out fast because their pots are porous. But that is only during the summer. 🙂

I can't believe there was so much I didn't know about watering! Amazing trick with the vinegar - so easy. I have two completely different attitudes when it comes to my smaller potted cacti and the big ones in the ground. I baby the ones in pots but I tend to go with survival of the fittest for the big ones. They have never been fed or given shade and they rarely get water. Now I'm thinking how much bigger they could be, and how many more flowers, if I just put a little effort in. I have heard of people putting sulfur down for fruit trees, but not for cactus. That totally makes sense though since cacti prefer the acid soil. Do you scrape away the top dressing in your gardens before putting the sulfur on? Do you sprinkle it on top or dig it into the soil? Thanks again for the great information and the glimpse into your beauitiful collection.
@CactusCaffeine

I just sprinkle it on my gardens as is. Then I water it heavily. May be better if you mix it in the soil but I’m just too lazy to do it all around my backyard. 😄

Hi Ana, very informative video! My cacti experience tropical climate here in the PH, so I wonder if we growers here would need to withhold watering during their dormant period too, and when would that be when we don't have a winter season?
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is important for some species of cacti to force them to go dormant to get more flowers in the warmer months. Your “winter” will be Dec-Feb. try giving them less water and let them experience the colder night air. Then by March, resume your normal watering routine. 😃

I have the same metal shelves that you keep your cactus on. My question is, is it ok that the water from the cactus above will splash down to the cactus on the next level? I thought “second hand” water is bad for a plant. Also, doesn’t the used water stain the cactus below? Right now I take each cactus to a different location to water it, but that takes a lot of time. I’d love to not worry about water splashing down to the plants on the next level.
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine Жыл бұрын
I haven’t had any problem with water dripping to the pots below it. I actually like it because it saves me water and I find it more efficient. The only downside I know is if the plant on top is sick (or if it has pests), water can carry the sickness to the plant below it. That is a risk that I am taking because like you said, it is too much work to move them every time I water. As for staining, I think maybe only if you have white fuzzy hairs on your cactus. 😉

i'm thinking about making a watering system for my cactus i wondered if you think it is a good idea. i would have them in individual pots that have drainage, those pots would be put into one large container that can hold 10+ pots, The individual pots would be raised from the floor of the main container with a couple of layers of stone and gravel. The main big pot would have a water feed to flood the container to the rim of the individual pots, which would all be set so the cactus base is at the same level. The main pot would also have a drain so after a 5 min soak the water can be let out and the cactus can drain naturally obviously the cactus would be only watered at the correct intervals depending on their soil condition / watering requirement, any cactus that shows signs of not needing to watered with the others can be lifted clear for the watering period. do you think this method would work?
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are doing a bottom watering system. It will work if done correctly. Depending on the size of the pot and the type of soil that you use, 5 minutes may not be enough time to get your soil wet till the top. But once you are able to get the correct time and frequency of watering, I think your system can work.🙂 Good luck!
