One tip that works for me when dealing with hydrophobic soil is using the mist setting on your hose if you have it. Like Gary mentioned in the video if you're soil contracts it's highly likely the water you spray will just leak right through the pot. Misting first will help pre-moisten the soil first. Then you wait a bit and switch to your normal spray setting and water slowly. This is especially helpful before you water in soluble fertilizer so that all the nutrients don't leak right through.

Great info Gary. Here in GA I had to water twice a day to get thru the 100F days. I did notice that all of my container tomatoes started getting purplish leaves which I figured out was loss of phosphorus due to the watering. Once the temps regulated I hit them with water soluble fertilizer and all of the new growth is back on track. So we have to be mindful of washing out nutrients. I haven't have blossom end rot for the first time so consistent watering is definitely the difference. Thanks !!

I always give my containers three passes. I water each container consecutively, then come back to the first container and go down the line two more times. By the third watering, the soil is moistened and the water will penetrate the entire container. I use this same strategy for stuff in the ground as well. Clay will often not even absorb the first watering, but if you do a little at a time, taking a break between watering, eventually the water will start penetrating into the ground.

That was REALLY helpful. I've been agonizing over yellowing leaves in my whiskey barrel containers and could not figure out what it was since I believed I was keeping up nutrients (yes, I thought it must be that) and it didn't help. I thought I was giving them enough water but clearly, in this heat, I was not (and was afraid to over water, i.e., everything you said). I'm going to follow this advice and see how it goes. Thanks so much!

I have found that what works best for me is using a water meter before watering. I can see how deep the dryness goes and tell how much water each plant needs. This has been particularly helpful with the GreenStalk.
@theone0312 жыл бұрын
Yes your plants will grow optimal with the moisture meter. I let mine get down to the middle level/moist before I water again. If it reads "wet" then you know you're fine.

In my area, zone 8b, we've had 2½ months of 100°+ temps every day. I did a grow bag garden this year, but the heat was just too much and I lost everything. I used mostly 7 gallon and 10 gallon grow bags. I purchased heavy duty plant saucers and put one under each grow bag. I lightly sprayed water on the top of the bag and added about 2" of water in the saucer, so the bag could wick it up from the bottom to keep the soil consistently moist. I used a moisture meter to monitor the soil moistness, and using the plant saucers really helped so I didn't have to water as often.

Great video. I garden only in containers. My plants are loaded with fruits/veggies and they have really been struggling this past week in Maryland with the heat. Thankful for this rain right now. I've rearranged everything on the deck so the plants get morning sun and afternoon shade for now, so that's helped some. Thinking of going to even bigger containers next year to have more wiggle room for water.

Something you might consider, I may have to try this myself, is to get a water heater pan to go under containers. That way you catch any water that runs through, and your plants get a chance to reabsorb the water. I am also experimenting with putting a jute mat in a hanging basket drip pan, and my strawberries seem to love it. It holds some water, which can be pulled from the mat as the soil dries out, without holding so much water it causes problems. . But your video is great, and your tips are really helpful, thank you.

This video is bang on time, I literally have my gardening diary in my lap and I was writing about this very issue, I turned to youtube for music and your video pops up on the very issue I've been having. I have four tomato plants of the same variety, two in a 25 litre container and two in containers of between 5 -10 litres. The two in the big containers have been producing spoilt fruit, an ugly brown indented spot appears and then begins to spread (the indent), then blackening. I thought it was a fungal infection but it hasn't occured on my smaller two plants, the fruit on those are perfect. Well, one of the 25 litre containers kept falling over and each time I noticed that the soil was bone dry, each time I was shocked and was happy when I watered and the water didn't run out at the bottom. As you said I was overly concerned about watering too much and root rot. It just dawned on me today, after one of the 25 litre containers fell again and the soil was dry, that this is the issue, irregular watering and the soil drying out The tipping over of the container was also no doubt caused by the decreased weight of the matter in the container. I grew this variety of tomato last year and the first truss of tomato had the same issue but much later on in their development, after the first 6 fruits however all others were perfectly fine. Before this afternoon and clicking that the underwatering is the issue, I was just waiting for the plants to 'correct' themselves, and after at least 5 weeks of spoilt fruit I was going to throw the plants away, there was no point maintaining such big plants bearing no good fruit. Thanks for the video, this has really reaffirmed my suspicion and provided me with confidence in my watering approach.

That is blossom end rot. Happens when plants can access nutrition specifically calcium. Happens when soil dries out at times, Consistent water is key. The roots get messed up when dried and can pull in calcium. Watering will fix it. How very timely Gary! I am struggling with this watering issue right now. I have mostly stock tank beds that definitely get hot and dry around the edges. Mid to high 90s now .I have everything on drip but just not getting enough water. I upped it to twice a day so we will see how things look by the weekend . I too was concerned about nutrients and overwatering. I have been giving all the tanks a good soaking with the hose as well. So maybe this is the reason I can’t grow a darn zucchini without BER 😳. Also stay away from black or tin colored containers. Use blue or White colors to reflect the sun. The dark colored containers heat the soil too hot and stress the plants. Found out the hard way lol.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN yes they do have their own little root system. Not many but some. I had left a few leeks in the garden and didn't pull them out hoping they would go to seed. Five went to seed, the others just continued to grow. When I went to pull one up to use it fresh I noticed all these little baby leeks around the big one. I'll take a picture and try to email it to you. I've never grown leeks before I was inspired to do so because of your videos. I will try and transplant them and let you know how it works out. Hi Gary, love your channel! I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and this year decided to plant my tomatoes and peppers in containers, (i'll be working on a Ruth Stout type garden this fall for next year as well as larger raised beds) My question is my tomato plants are doing really well I have tomatoes on the vine but their not ripening. By the examples you gave on planter pot sizes I did pretty good. Also many of the tomatoes have gotten a type of bottom rot. I pull them off when that happens but not sure what's going on. Of course before I water I do the ole finger test to make sure it really is dry and I'm watering about twice a day depending on storms. Any suggestions on what could be the problem with ripening and the bottom rot on some of the tomatoes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. oh and I do fertilize but only every few weeks to a month. Thanks for all you do!
@SlackerU2 жыл бұрын
Bottom rot is usually a calcium deficiency so you could try a calcium spray on the foliage until you find out why the plants aren't getting enough from the soil. If they are large enough to eat then you can ripen them inside before an animal or bug uses them for a water source, the squirrels like them green here.
@NYR119492 жыл бұрын
For reasons I can't explain, only the first few of my container tomatoes suffer from blossom end rot. After that everything seems to grow fine. This has been happening for the last five or so years....a complete mystery to me.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
So that is blossom end rot. It is due to not having calcium in the soil or the plant cant access the calcium in the soil. The later is caused buy not enough water. So the solution is to add powdered lime to the surface. A good dusting and water it in well but then keep the soil full moist going forward and that should help. Romas are the worst and get it when others dont. Variety impacts the issue. Hi Gary, Have you tried setting up any of your containers as wicking “beds”? Just curious what you thought of them. Usually people are using the wicking design to make raised beds in galvanized stock tanks or IBC totes that are cut in 1/2 but it is possible to scale it down for smaller containers. The larger beds usually only need to be refilled once a week and the plants stay consistently watered. 💦

@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
1 plant per 5 gallon? Anyway if you missed watering and the soil dried 1x, it makes it hard for the plant to get calcium. Even watering is usually the main reason for BER. However, you can add in some calcium via lime. But keep watering consistent. Hi Gary! Good video. My tomatoes are splitting. I was told it is from overwatering. In your video you say don't worry about overwatering. Now I am confused. Why are my tomatoes splitting?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
Its not over watering. Its them drinking it in so fast the skin splits. Some varieties do that more. If you are watering and moisture is consistent then they dont over indulge. But if you have soil that dries, they are in drought, you give them tons of water, they can crack. But it is really more so about the variety. Depends, also, when they are splitting, on the vine or in the house. I was picking what I thought were unsplit cherry tomatoes so after washing and drying inside I'd find quite a few split. So it will bond to particles in the soil so some always stays behind. Some will wash out but you just have to have a more frequent routine of feeding if needed. You can keep the watering can next to it and instead of giving it all at once. Give a little each day over the week. My tomato plants are doing horrible this year. Ive never seen them this bad. I dont know if they are fungused or if I over fertilized them and they are damaged from that. The plants look terrible and the tomatoes are quite small.

I am struggling to get anything to sit fruit in my green stocks! I have peppers and green beans and broccoli and cabbage and other. My lettuces and spinach is Bolton way early. I am so upset… I bought eight green stocks and I’m Not getting any food. Do you have any suggestions?

Hmmm. So fall is coming so cool crops can go back in soon. Im not sure where you are but once June comes its too warm for leafy greens. You can definitely put bush beans in. I think the timing of your cool crops was a little off. Now is nothing but heat loving plants. Peppers should come around. Basil, Swiss chard, beans, bush cucumber (1 in bottom level), can go in now. Wish I could help more. why not use a plate under containers that holds some water? I do and we had very unregulary temperatures, at over 36 C last week, and then dropping with 10 degC so having a bottom off water stay in that plate under container helps me to get it the day through, till i get home from work.

Interesting. The only plants I'm having trouble with is my tomatos. Producing fruit but they're turning yellow. I have almost all my plants in identical 5gal fabric pots. Everything is picture perfect except those tomatoes. Same soil, same fertilizers. The tomatoes may be getting about an hour or 2 more sun. Think it's the pot size ?

Yeah 5 is tight. And might need just a ton of soluble Nitrogen. As they get big the suck the life out of the soil. I would try that on a few and see what happens as an experiment You can find items I use or discuss in videos, by checking out my Amazon Storefront for fertilizer, pest management, shade cloth, seed starting supplies, books and more! at www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. Potatoes are one you can rot but in the heat they usually have a lot of green so you are okay, if you and planting another round, yes less water.
