Hey I have a question! So I got my first brand new snowboard. Which also happens to be my first snowboard. I’ve snowboarded for a while now I just never pulled the trigger on a board. ANYWAYS it feels as if it has some wax on it but since it’s a new board, should I just start over and put a good wax on it or just leave it be for a couple rides? Also, do I need to do anything to the edges since it’s new? Or does it come pretty much ready to rip? Thanks bro!!

Plus if your riding a ski area that has allot of mellow/flat areas like Sunshine Village Canada, fresh wax will help you get through those sections with less chance of getting stuck and having to unstrap and have the skiers make out that there better because the are pushing past with poles... I'd like to see them cross every flat section in the resort without poles or skating... that's what we have to do so it makes us generally better at preserving momentum and planning way ahead... Of course that's a massive generalisation, I got love for skiers, you can borrow their poles when you do get stuck!

Great video! 2 things I would like to add. If you don't remove your bindings, at least loosen the screws. The tension on the inserts + the heat could de-laminate your board and/or form dimples on the base. Plus removing bindings makes it easier. Also, he mentioned pulling your skis/board out of storage from the garage. Because of the temperature swings in a garage or attic I would avoid storing them there. Climate controlled is the better option if you can. Happy boarding & skiing.
@TheMk1000002 жыл бұрын
Plus don't neglect to fully dry and apply a heavy coat of storage wax right round to the edges and onto the topsheet and leave it on thick to protect as much as possible from temp and humidity changes...

I must be a really technical person when it comes to this the bottom of my board looks like a masterpiece of waxing when I'm done. 3 different brushes to smooth it out and the lines are like super straight. Waxing and tuning is so worth doing yourself 👍

Prepping is the most important part of waxing. If you ride a lot of park, your base will have a lot of contaminants. I've always started with the edges, then wipe filings off. Pre-heat the base and give it some good scrapes tip to tail. Then you use base cleaner once the old wax/contamination has been removed. Then you can get to waxing like normal. Brushing is also a very important part of waxing. Many people skip that part, but it does make a difference when you can create grooves in the wax for water displacement.
@milesunderhill90562 жыл бұрын
i would like to note that for skis u want to wax tip to tail, as that is the direction your ski moves which makes your waxing efforts more effective. Also, u really only need to wait around 30 mins after ironing before u scrape it off. And for the brush, try to go over those spots a couple times and really smooth out the surface.
@TheMk1000002 жыл бұрын
Same applies to most snowboards as unless you ride nothing but park you generally spend significantly more time riding in your preferred direction (nose first) as a snowboard instructor i need to demo drills riding switch for the students who ride goofy (I'm regular) so they can visualise properly but overall I still ride 80% one direction but always wax nose to tail as i can definitely feel the difference in friction when switch riding

Novice question here: when you scrape the wax off, how much do you take and how do you know you’ve reached that point?
@rubberonasphalt3 жыл бұрын
Scrape off all. Its the thin layer of wax that gets into the pores of the wood that makes it glide more. If you scrape, and there isnt chunks coming off, your pretty much done
@milesunderhill90562 жыл бұрын
yea basically do it until there is barely any coming off when u scrape it
@SaltAndVi2 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand it, the board has very tiny pockets all over the bottom which traps the wax. When you scrape off the excess wax, you're not removing the wax from those tiny pockets, only what's overflowing from them so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Be careful with the brand of wax you get and the temp type, Some are easier to scrape off than others and some even need to be room temp before you start scraping! Got swix warm wax and did my wax/scrape job in 10 degree weather so it was a nightmare trying to scrape everything off, This is a perfect example of wax that should be room temp when scraping. Never saw this tip on any waxing videos so I hope this saves someone from the trouble I went through lol

If there's a layer of wax on it from the previous wax you didn't scape it well enough before. You wax to fill in micro pores and scratches to make it as smooth as possible. Think of it as the outside of an airplane. Many people make the mistake of thinking wax is a lubricant. It is not.
@jakemartinez31092 жыл бұрын
I’ve also been told to get your board to room temp to open up the pores to get the wax seeping in more. Is that true or a myth?

A certified instructor and a Burton riglet Park and gear. Instructor is optional as it is more about making them experience sliding on snow, but safety wise and precaution a certified instructor have the knowledge of the possible danger.

Snowboard wax is formulated for snow. Skate wax isn't. If you're in a pinch, any wax will work(better than dry base), but it makes a difference using the correct formula for the conditions.

Do you need to scrape it off or can you just ride it off?
@TheMk1000002 жыл бұрын
Always scrape as it will not wear of evenly especially on a non camber board /manufacturers put a ton of engineering into giving you a super smooth and specific shaped base, to give you a predictable ride, not scraping takes away from that and also will make your base dehydrate unevenly

OK Johnathan, I opened up this video and then you mentioned the nerdy way of waxing, in my mind I was "I wonder what the nerdy way is" (I live in hot climate), so I go look up the nerdy way with Tommie and Senna before continuing this video, I then came back to this video and started watching you. I started laughing so hard because it looked like a kid playing with crayons in comparison. (No offence and of course this is the method the majority of people use anyways.)
@ermanakbay2 жыл бұрын
Isn't that the wrong angle to hold the scraper? I thought it should be angled in the direction of travel. So the angle between the scraper and the surface of the board on direction you're scraping should be 45 degrees.

@Robert-un3cf2 жыл бұрын
You want to get as much of the wax off as possible, leaving just what soaked into the pores of the base and a microscopic film. You really want to scrape and then brush as much off as you can.
@JCars-Bikes2 жыл бұрын
so i have a snowboard from 2008 it has been great but feeling a little slow lately i have once in all those years got it serviced somewhere never waxed after that or sharpened is that bad :D
@bhavpatel5922 жыл бұрын
That is why it's been super slow! Waxing, sharpening your edges and filling in any holes or dents is important to maintain your board!
@TheMk1000002 жыл бұрын
Yeah your base is like a sponge which you never want to dry out, wax doesn't just make you faster, it keeps your board supple and more resistant to damage from rocks and roots... It will rehydrate to an extent if you give it a heavy wax and let it sit for a week base up before scraping but you have basically created a beater board... on the plus side you don't need to worry about hitting sketchy jibs or rocks on it 😅
@nathanwimsatt94382 жыл бұрын
im sure it was just to get the video done, but you left a lot of wax on the board. That will slow you down. its not necessary to wait overnight to the was to dry or cure. good rule of thumb is feel the top side of your board or skis right after you lay the wax. It will be warm. once its cool. then scrape. Typically this only takes 15 mins max.

@Fade_Modded2 жыл бұрын
Every other lift. Jk I just go for fun so I’ll wax once I start to notice my base turning white near the edges. This means the wax is drying. Happens at the edges first because most of your weight is on there. But really you only need to do it when you feel it starting to slow you down. But better to catch it before you get to the mountain!

I own a really old board it gets white spots down the edges and across the contact patch on the nose, this has been happening the day after a ride and seems like it needs waxed ever day i ride, would there be a problem with my waxing technique or would getting the board resurfaced be the way to fix this.
@zachzimmer6922 Жыл бұрын
Late reply, but in case your still wondering, you probably haven’t scraped your board well enough, the white spots are likely excess wax drying up on the surface.
@Herryman101 Жыл бұрын
I have taken the board to get resurfaced and to get waxed from a board shop and still have white patches appearing, i dont think its excess wax. The board is from 2003 and i want to believe its the base not holding onto the wax and the oils from the wax, causing the base to dry out quickly and make white patches. Thanks for the advice tho.

Yes! I had and still own a board for almost 20 years. Never waxed it and it still rides fast?? I got a new neversummer and have waxed it a few times in two seasons and it is also fast. Not sure how much faster wax makes you. From a nobody so take it with a grain of salt. I like the waxing station.
