How to wean a toddler off of breastfeeding

I breastfed my baby till 2. By then the feeding pattern was like before afternoon nap, night sleep and countless times while sleeping in the night. I got bites, the sucking was painful and I had a lesser milk supply. So I thought of weaning off. Initially I said "no milk" and that made her scream and whine. So I gave in for a week and gave her all the love and bonded with her more than before. Created that emotion of safety. I calmly said Mama's boobs are getting painful. She understood it gradually. I used to act painful frequently for about 3 days. She understood and one fine day she was too caring and said Mama's boob is broken. I said yes. I took a bandage and put it on my hand said my hand and boob is broken. She believed and she didn't feed for the afternoon nap. I put sleep music and cuddled her to sleep. Night time was tough. So I put bandage on my both breasts to show and she believed it. She whined for a week. It was tough but I tried maximum to keep calm. Didn't have sleep. Just had to sing or rock or calm down her. Slowly she started to learn the new routine. But somedays are tough, others are breeze. One more thing to mention, we shifted our sleep to a big couch instead of bed. So she didn't have memories of boobs. We are cosleepers. Slowly understood her moods and shifted back to bed. I had swelling from the day of stopping. I took hot showers 2 times a day gently massaging the boobs. I kept a count on the times I massaged. Reduced the massage every shower. 3rd and 4th days I kept chilled cabbage leaves on the boobs and the swelling was highly reduced. I think milk stopped after. It is so effective. I hope this gives some idea.

Thing is… my 2.5 YO son DOES eat a normal diet… I don’t make anymore milk. It’s all about comfort to fall asleep but I’m tired of it!!!

So I tried the band aids and it work for a while then it didn’t because she would pull them off..but I took her to the dentist my baby teeth is so rotten from the sugar in my breast milk..fyi I still produce milk after 2yrs and 7 months..so I try to pump some in a bottle and she is disgusted..the dentist said try the old fashion way lemon juice or hot sauce..we chose lemon juice cause my baby like hot sauce..she cried for less than 5m and now is sleep..I’m keep doing this trick see if this

I tried everything and nothing! Someone in the comments mentioned this weening balm of etsy and i got it and omg!! 😩😩 we are 3 weeks boob free!!! My almat 2 1/2 year old was stuckk to the boob at night and even during the day. I thought I was never going tp stop breastfeeding. First week at night was a little rough because she would wake up to cry 1-2 times but i would soothe her back to sleep. Just rub the balm on your nipples during the day and before bed or keep it close thats what i did. She would smell me and just go back to bed 😂 good luck mamas! Don’t give in! Also the balm is organic and harmless. Its also literally like vaseline so your baby won’t know you put anything on it.

My SIL did this and I keep thinking my daughter will be too smart for this trick. I plan to stop my daughter from nursing by her 2nd birthday. I am starting to feel “done” other times I’m sad to say this chapter of our lives is coming to an end. Glad to hear this trick can work and will be trying that. On top of the cold cabbage leaves. A friend of mine did that for about a week and took some Benadryl to help speed up the process. I’ll try the basics for sure.

For my first, when he was around 21 months I applied some Vegemite on my boob he tried it was yukk and he was done with boobs. My second now 22 months, he tell me to wipe the Vegemite that way he can have some more milk 😫

Same, we have tried fruit smoothies, milk with strawberry, milk with chamomile, milk with cocoa, sometime it works sometimes it doesn't, so we always have to switch it up. And offer lots of dairy (cheese strings, yogurt...)

Toddler starts from 1 year old. It is medically advised to breastfeed for at least the child's first year of life. Although it's the mothers and babies right to say when it's time to stop. For me though their is no reason of 2yrs old. That's just me, though 😊

I haven’t tried this yet but telling him he’s a big boy now kindly doesn’t help… talking kindly & explaining things won’t work… I know my son & he will keep nursing to sleep until he gets married & has a wife to nurse him to sleep if I don’t get this under control now!!!
