Unfortunately, around me most of the women I know give up breastfeeding before 4 months, or simply go straight to formula. I bf my son close to two years and felt like a lot of people tried to make me feel like it was "unusual" . By that I mean they continuously asked silly questions like "how long are you going to breastfeed" or "are you going to breastfeed until you are having conversations with your kid about it?" ,l or "maybe you could go to your car to do that" ... I have a little girl that is 14 months and I am proud to still be breastfeeding her, regardless of what the people around me think or what they are doing.

You can tell them that a Dietitian (me) told you that you should breastfeed for at least 2 years (if possible) for your child's health and for your own.

I am also breastfeeding 🤱 my 17 months old daughter and i also get asked not only by family and friends but also from professionals, often as a concern it is very annoying. I tell them atleast till shes 2 years old. Yes it is easy with formulas and whole milk for your self but for the baby its best with breastmilk if you can produce otherwise understandable.

Thank you Sarah for clearing this up! I have been a Waldorf teacher for 25 years and a La Leche League counselor for many years. I breastfed both my children: my son (now 31) until he weaned himself at 5 years, and my daughter (now 18) until she weaned herself at 3 years. Today they are both extremely healthy adults with very strong immunity and healthy teeth with no cavities! They are confident and independent people!

Even if he would have said something about breastfeeding, I guess he was a man. And as a woman, a mother, you know better 🤷🏼‍♀️ there are things that only women can do. Bring a baby to the world and breastfeed. Don‘t let anyone tell you what to do, especially not a man.

Yeah but Steiner was a phenomenological genius, that's why people follow his teachings the way they do. I get you, I agree somewhat but... I'm not close to Steiner's level of amazing. I'm a baby next to him.

I felt terrible and went into depression listening to others about weaning. I weaned my son at a year old and I was so hurt, mothers should listen to their own mother intuition and your baby. I’m expecting now and will do what I feel and what my child wants at this point. I had a problem detachment as well as my child. I felt I was mistreating my child when I stopped nursing. This video is priceless. Thank you for all your help. My daughter is three and still loves to be breastfed but with time she is asking less often. It's wonderful to know that this process can be gradual rather than stopping from one day to the other. I have enjoyed breastfeeding so much as I have seen it as bonding. My husband had wanted me to stop breastfeeding after three months as he finds it disgusting. I chose to ignore it. :)

I'm glad to hear your conclusion. Your videos are very healing. Thank you very much. I'm homeschooling my 6 year old in grade one with a Waldorf system. I was depressed a few months ago and we were watching TV (wholesome things but still...) now we're off it completely and instead my husband is reading the kids some nice books before bed and I get to relax too, he has such a lovely voice. All that to say that my daughter who is 3 and a half years old still wants to breastfeed but I've been weaning her now because 'it feels wrong' to me. My son who is close to 2 is still breastfeeding and it's normal to me.

Hi I have a 22 month toddler and he shows no sign of giving up nursing. My only negative experience is I am always feeling weak. However each time we breastfed I feel it is a profoundly blissful experience energising both of us. I almost want to cry at the idea that in the future this will end. Philosophy from back then doesnt have the scientific back up we have today, not saying his philosophy isnt good. I like that you showed he actually never really addressed the matter on bf in the way they seem to misconstrued he did. WHO recommends a minimum of 2 even for us here in the US. I still nurse my 20month old and i still love following waldorf for my 5yr old. I plan to self wean my son because there is always benefits in the milk, theyve shown its beneficial even in cancer patients. I love your view on the matter, i get self weam isnt for every mom and i wouldnt shame that if weaning at one is whats best for them and i hope they would respect my choice for my children. They are still growing this young and its still so good for their development

Though I suffered mastitis with my first son and only for to breast feed for 4 months, and only got to breastfeed with my second son for 3 weeks because he wasn't gaining weight (and was loosing quite a dangerous amount of weight) I didn't give up. I was finally able to breastfeed my daughter till she was almost 4 yrs old. Like you said, she just stopped asking for it one day. I wouldn't trade my time with the kids for anything in the world. Thank you for making this video. I did have a lot of people in the community looking at me weird for still breastfeeding her as a toddler. Breastfeeding helped her physically to help her grow, but it helped me mentally, giving me the courage to do what was right (and listen to my motherly instinct more) even when people thought I was wrong.

I grew up in a very Waldorf saturated homeschool community and started my own family with a boy from that group many years later. All the mamas breastfed for a range of years and I always go back to those memories as a young mom now when in doubt. My MIL is wonderful, extremely knowledgeable on all things Waldorf edu and we are very involved together in continuing these methods for my littles. I breastfed my oldest till 11 mos who is almost 4 now and my second who is almost 2 is still an avid nurser. Im beginning to tire of it but it’s encouraging to find a video from you like this while I navigate the weaning process. I am very blessed to not have any pressure from family/community to quit. We dont have a Waldorf homeschool group these days but im hoping to create one this coming year so as to cultivate some of the same support, traditions and likeminded community I thrived on throughout my childhood!

Breastfeeding should be between mother and child. It shouldn't be anyone's business when to tell you when to quit or even make you feel like an unfit mother for going over the 1 year old mark. It is upsetting that society finds it even unnatural to still be breastfeeding a toddler. I've even experienced among a conversation of women about how they would never breastfeed because it would ruin their breasts and make them sag all while holding their newborns. Society in this age is truly twisted.

When my 3 year old daughter went to Waldorfkindergarden the teachers were very upset and implied it was abuse. I thaught Rudolf Steiner told so. I think I found more quotes against it. Like that the position while nursing would have a bad impact on the walking? Very interesting.

Evolutionarily, humans should wean between the age of 4 and 7+ at the change of teeth (hence why they are called *milk* teeth). Historically this was weaning age, and in traditional cultures around the world today they still breastfeed well past toddlerhood (Mongolia is a great example)

@searose6192
@searose6192 3 жыл бұрын
@@neuroticgypsy um no, they don't do it for birth control. Lactational Amenorehea only lasts until the child starts eating (between 6 months and 1 year) at which point there is no longer any suppression of fertility. Humans breastfeed for the developmentally appropriate period of time for our species 4-7 years. Cultural factors sometimes extend beyond that, or in a few cases cut it short, but for our rate of development comparing us to our closet relatives 4-7 is the appropriate weaning age. One huge reason is the immune protection offered by breastfeeding, which I am sure you know greatly decreases child mortality for children under age 5 which is a large factor in average life expectancy. Mothers and infants are symbiotic, the benefits for both are numerous.

What is the purpose of breastfeeding so long for? If a baby is walking around, eating mashed potatoes and able to drink from a sippy cup, there is no reason to keep breastfeeding. I honestly think most women extended breastfeed for weight loss reasons or to just say they did.

Mother over here too and I agree with what you say, but I think it extends deeper into the sick heads of these women. I think they NEED a child to NEED them and breastfeed to feel comforted/ good in a selfish way and then make it seem like it's for the child. I am so happy I am not the only one who sees this sickness. It is TRULY absurd and mentally sick to keep breastfeeding a child who has teeth, talks, asks for food and has adequate weight gain. They do not need breast milk hello!

If you’re having issues with it, you can stop. Since they aren’t self weaning, you might want to take it slow; if your feeding them a certain amount of times a day, remove one feeding from the morning and one from the evening and replace with formula/pumped milk. You don’t need to breastfeed till 2 yrs old if it’s not working for you❤️

Dear Sarah, thank You for this video. It is very important. I am breastfeeding my 23 months old daughter and I think, I will continue for so long, as she stops herself... I read Dr. Steiner´s texts regarding mother milk etc. and I am convinced, that he would be fine with breastfeeding for even the first seven years of the child... He didn´t say it, but I think, it follows from what he said. I´m from Czech Republic and also here, in our "anthro" community, I heard this nonsense like "Rudolf Steiner said". So I decided to write an article about "R. Steiner and breastfeeding" for our athroposophic - and also non-anthroposophic parents. Because I hate untrue. And I found an article in english, where is written, that Rudolf Steiner himself was breastfed for 4 years. I would like to use in my article, but I can´t find the source. You are speaking about it, too, so I want to ask You, if You know, where it is (if it is)? It would help me a lot, because I´m not so good in english and in german sources I found nothing... Thank You and have a good time! Katerina

This is such a hot topic, I am not a parent yet I am an Early Childhood Educator that has worked in Waldorf and went to a Waldorf school as a child and did my Foundation studies. Ive shifted the past 4 plus years in the Montessori community I been working as an assistant at Montessori School in a toddler class for just over four years now. Ive worked in a nursery class in a waldorf school so 2.5 to just 3 year olds basically first year Casa. I know in Waldorf having studied Steiner and my experience and love for it does encourage longer as the independance part of the child does not come into curriculum till much later well into kindergarden. Where in the other realm of Montessori independance is one of the main focus espacially in early childhood and building that independance in the child anything that impedes the childs independance Maria Montessori was opposed when she created the philosophy I mean it even goes as far in true montessori she said even cribs and high chairs and essentially all the baby furniture we use today impeads their independance. Breastfeeding beyond 1 probably seen as that. But also soceital views and personal upbringing I think makes a parents decision on how long too and if they can. No right or wrong in my opinion I think its okay till age 2 after that I personally believe child is too old. In my experience with kids in my class that have come to us in Sept that still nurse the attachement to mom and transitioning the child into the classroom and settling them took longer and more of a challenge cause the child found that comfort in nursing have one child in my current class that came to us in the fall still nursing while mom would hold him he would do so himself anywhere he was. Made it a bit harder to transition him into the class the first two weeks almost he had to be picked up half day cause he would not settle for nap and became very unsettled by afternoon. My observations is that in cases like that the detachment from mom is harder on the child and teachers.

So sad that there are so many mother's in the comments who have felt ashamed or embarrassed for extended breastfeeding. My five kids all bf for different lengths of time, 13 months, 7 months, 21 months, 4 months and nearly four years. When they were ready to stop we stopped. None of them remember being breastfed but it provided them with what they needed ( food and comfort, especially comfort as they got older ) at the time, and I'm the one left with the memories. At the end of the day, your boobs your babies your business. Don't mind what anyone else says.

This is a wonderful insightful video and I always make sure to watch for an updated video on your channel. I do have a question to ask now that our lives have changed so much over the past weeks how to provide for young children through this epidemic time in a waldorf way? I'm an earlychildhood educator who is returning to work soon as essential work and our province new regulations is for having limited children and the children must practice soical distancing and keep 6 feet apart. How would you soften an enviorment that require those expectations and help the children cope with the high level of stress that is happening around them? Thank you very much Sarah

I like this ... Don't offer but don't refuse.... I have made it to a year and am incredibly proud I made it there were multiple times I feared my body was gonna fail me .... Now we are starting to wean i have mixed feelings like I'm ready to be done and have a bit of a break from it but ... I'm also kinda sad ... Especially when he is ready for sleep and rolls away from me instead of nuzzling into nurse 🤣 I found my self laughing and crying the other night because of this 🤣🤣

I dont think men should actually have anything to say about breastfeeding. Tbh. Mothers instincts are always best. Alot of tribes still breastfeeding there children till 5. I let my child breastfeed until she was ready to wean which was about 3.5 and the occasional feed until about 3 yrs 9 months until my milk was gone.

I am really glad that I got lucky to watch this video. My daughter is turning 2 in a few days and I was planing to start the process of weaning, however she is very attached to breastmilk which makes the processes harder.I am tired of breastfeeding but she is the exact opposite. What should I do if we dont have mutual feeling towards weaning?

I think, that you did a lot. And if you are tired and have no other way, how to get your strengh back, it is not a bad thing. Better to stop and be strong loving mother, than to be weak and tired mother. I think. Maybe you can try breastfeeding only before sleeping...

In Islam it's written in Quran that it's better to breastfeed a baby till 2 years... For me i believe thag there's a secret benefits for this specific period... But it's not writtrn if we should start food in this 2 years or no... And logically thr front teeths coming up doesn't mean baby is ready to eat... And now my baby is 6 months old and i tried many advises to increase milk supply.. As a working mom im tired also.. But for sure ill try my best to keep breastfeeding him

The thought of a mother forced to wean her child because of community pressure is painful 💔 for me i follow quran guides (And the mothers should suckle their children for two whole years for him who desires to make complete the time of suckling; and their maintenance and their clothing must be-- borne by the father according to usage; no soul shall have imposed upon it a duty but to the extent of its capacity; neither shall a mother be made to suffer harm on account of her child, nor a father on account of his child, and a similar duty (devolves) on the (father's) heir, but if both desire weaning by mutual consent and counsel, there is no blame on them, and if you wish to engage a wet-nurse for your children, there is no blame on you so long as you pay what you promised for according to usage; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah and know that Allah sees what you do.) 2vs233.

All my kids self weaned. The oldest went the longest to 22 months. I think the older kids influenced the younger to move to solids. I was willing to go longer 🤷🏼‍♀️ I wonder if the stats in third world countries has to do with lack of other food options.

Islam taught that a child be breastfed for two years. So there is nothing wrong breastfeeding your child as long is there are no health issues and the mother has enough energy. To Sarah, I appreciate the knowledge and information you shared. However, the percentage of mothers who breastfeed their children up to 4 to 5 years are very small compared to the millions of mothers who don't. But still the vast majority in the third world mothers mostly breastfed up to 2 some from birth while others from since conception. In any case it is very important for babies to be breastfed long enough and weaned off the wright ways to help the child socialize with teachers and friends.

I need your advise, I am trying to wean day time feeding for my child who is 20 months old now, reason is I am all alone in home and need to cook and when he do breast feed it's continuous till he don't wake up for around 2 to 3 hours. It's 3rd day today, yesterday and day before yesterday he cried a lot, I felt like I am getting selfish and but today he slept without asking me to feed, I gave him whatever he asked to eat, played with him and in his sorrow of not getting breastfeed, tried to make him laugh. And now he asked me to move aside that he want to sleep on bed. I just want words of affirmation that I am not doing any wrong

But she's starting to take a cup already maybe I'm crazy but we might just go straight to a cup and continue breast feeding as long as my body will allow and she will hopefully get enough this way. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for giving her a cup but she's doing it and loves it

Am an African,in my culture babies can be breastfeed until they themselves says no to it.It is also very common in my culture for a baby to be made fun of like for example " big old man or woman still breastfeeding " So most Women in my culture will breast baby and stop when they next pregnant.In all breast are made for feeding the young,as long as you the motherboard is healthy,why not go breestfeeding .

It is wrong answer. First Steiner said that nothing should be done instinctly because it is our animal part. Everything shoud be done with deliberation. He said that 6 months is enough but mother can prolong on 9 months, after that there is not benefit of brestfeefing only strengthening the mother’s ego. The same is in macrobitic philosophy

IT IS SURELY POLITICAL, that the USA recommends 1 year, whereas most others recommend 2 years :) If this is really science based (and not politics) then why is Europe and many/most others at 2 years, and USA at 1 YEAR? Methinks this is another instance of the pols and officials to pander/cater/assuage the politically (over) powerful American women who want to feel no guilt about weaning at 1 year ( or 3 months) when the science says it is better for the baby/child to have the superior breast milk for far longer than 1 year! American women go back to their work/careers and need desperately to feel good about weaning their baby earlier and earlier. In the USA for example, you can see that if a vocal group demands abortions and abortions up to and beyond 9 months, THIS tells you all you need to know about the political power of the American woman. The politicians, health organizations inclination to cater to their every need/demand/desire/whim.
