How to wear a Bengali style dhuti with a saree

for the first time I've seen something truly amazing, a man able to tie and wear a full length saree as a dhoti and is able to carry it off extremely well, and it actually looks like an fantastic dhoti just made for him. I will buy myself the first silk saree to wear as a dhoti. Thanks very much guys. love the enthusiasm from Bibi for the Bengali Babu. great work are you able to share other styles of wearing dhoti - like the north indian and the south indian styles as well. I find that the Kerala style is a bit too placid ( although dignified ) and not very showy offy if you know what I mean. But the bengali style clearlywins a lot of hearts. very much appreciated

This style of wrapping is SO MUCH more beautiful than the pre-pleated dhoti. A bit more trouble, yes, but well worth it.

Thanks you, I was looking for exactly the same thing. I purchased a Dhuti with bengali style anchal which was created by artists ( shilpi) and hand printed anchal design. I have to wear it for this years Durga Puka. Thank you for putting this video, the nostalgi effect is enormous .

Very good explanation. I wear a dhuti in this style (minus the fan part as that is not very practical) 24/7 all year round and believe me, it is the most comfortable wear waist down in this hot and humid climate of ours. I even wear it to corporate business meetings and client visits. We were taught how to wear the shirt and trousers by the British. It worked for them in the cold climate of theirs. But not for us. I have distributed by entire wardrobe of branded and bespoke stitched shirts and trousers to people around me and now have a fine collection of dhuties (and panjabis) from various places in India. The day our nation goes back to our age old traditions of clothing, we will have removed one more artifact of colonialism from our minds.

There are many in Gariahat but one of my favourites is Kohinoor. They make bespoke panjabis (kurtas) and can also offer you dhoties to match the panjabi.

The Panjabi ( kurtas) are / become too long. My father's kurtas used to be knee length. Only then the dhuti looks good. Please bring back shorter kurtas. ( Bengali here). Will be in Kolkata soon. :-)

I agree! With dhoti shorter punjabis are worn. Sadly I only have long ones in London, so had to demonstrate with this. I keep short punjabis and dhotis at my Kolkata home. Over the years I've got some of them tailored, and some I've found in retail shops. Try Khadi India and Biswa Bangla, or smaller shops in Gariahat. Bigger stores like Fabindia will definitely NOT have them

Haha yes I did. Actually we have lots of rituals in our weddings. For the main ritual I had traditional dhoti (from my inlaws don't worry :)), this was for one of the sub rituals. My mother and grandmother were both pleased to see me use the saree as a dhoti and it looks gorgeous :) 😃
