This a quick How To tutorial of how to weather any toy or model quick, easy, and cheap. By simply using black shoe polish you can weather any toy or model in a matter of minutes and the results are pretty great. For my example I used a Millennium Falcon I found at Goodwill for .99 cents.
I hope you enjoy this custom toy.
Thanks for visiting DR Toys, have a great one!

Nice tutorial. I'll have to try shoe polish sometime. I usually use acrylic paint. Regarding those killer decals you made- if you use a laser printer (with laser waterslide decals), you won't have to clear coat them prior to placing them on with water and a bit of white glue mixed in. Just a different process because laser runs off toner instead of ink- but a very good one for details. Great if your work has a laser machine. There's even "Ghost ink" you can get to print in white now!

I normally wipe it off right away but only dabbing it with a paper towel. But once dry you can also use the green scrub side of a damp sponge and lightly scrub away and excess.

I loved this video, and I have a similar sized millennium falcon, but no shoe polish. Do you have any alternates. For example would shear black paint work? I don’t exactly know we’re to go looking so if there are no alternatives I would like to know some stores were you bought that paint
@DRToysCreations
@DRToysCreations 2 жыл бұрын
You can make a wash with some black oil paint and some thinner there are also some great tutorials on KZbin that show how to make your own wash. I would be careful using just black acrylic print because it dries so fast and may be hard to get off. I normally use Citadel Nuln Oil black wash. If you have a hobby shop or a gamer shop (like a shop that sells Warhammer stuff) they normally carry that. You can also always find it online. My Hobby Lobby or Michelle’s don’t carry it unfortunately… Hope that helps. 😀

If you used clear Acrylic Foating Medium Get the same effect as Shoe Polish. The advantage is use different Color. Great video. I am thinking of doing this on a very small Bandai Millenium Falcon 001 and Star Destroyer 006 kit (both about 4 inches long). I don't plan to handle the models except for cleaning dust off occasionally so it ok to leave the shoe polish to dry but not use a top coat (like a flat coat)? Thanks for sharing

@@DRToysCreations I've just completed the Millenium Falcon today using your technique and it looks great! I had to figure out how much water to mix and because the kit is so small, it was a challenge wiping off with a paper towel. But in the end, using some water on the paper towel for certain areas and using a brush with water helped to get the right amount of weathering. Thanks again man!

Why shoe polish? Is it better than acrylic proper wash?
@DRToysCreations
@DRToysCreations 2 жыл бұрын
No, not necessarily, just a cheaper alternative. I typically use Citadel Nuln Oil @ $7 for 0.81oz vs Kiwi Shoe Polish @ $3 for 2.5oz. It's a nice alternative and it works pretty great if you're newer to making and on a budget. This video was just to show how to weather a toy with something you may have around the house.

So Citadel Nuln oil is actually a water based wash. Used mostly on War Hammer figures and things like that. I actually really like using it... I've never really done the oil and thinner wash but I'm guessing that works pretty good as well.

The millinium falcon is a piece of junk as Luke Skywalker said, so there are no mistakes when you weather it. A little more grime, a little less, a little more rust? It's all good and looks professional either way.

@DRToysCreations
@DRToysCreations 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can totally do this on a plastic model kit. I like to put the decals on then do the wash over them because it ties the whole thing together. One thing I do is put a clear coat over the whole thing before doing the wash, that helps prevent you scrubbing the decals off. I would still be carful around the decals but it definitely helps.

Sorry to bother you again since this is my first time to ever weather or do something after building a kit and the Millennium Falcon is somewhat a holy grail for me haha! I've read that Tamiya Panel Line can cause damage and brittle Bandai plastic kit and I was thinking of doing the list below. 1. After building, apply decals. 2. Gloss top coat 3. Panel line with acrylic thinned with water, wipe excess but okay to leave some dirt for weathered look 4. Use tamiya weathering kit (soot and rust) 5. Then cover with flat coat Are the steps okay? I don't know how to paint so I'm not taking it as an option now but would very much like to paint the pilots and would probably start there using Vallejo colors
