What about paper macheing *with* monster mud? Rather than glue

Any new ideas? I'm starting a project soon and plan on using the Titebond III and the other suggestions unless something new has come up.

Thanks! You answered my nagging question re going back to a matte finish after applying the too glossy spar varnish. Also, the trash bag idea during rain is a good one.

I built a skelton out off news paper and then used kitchen towel and glue 4 months ago. Do you have a easy way of making a skull
@UnhingedProductions16 жыл бұрын
Yep.. there is a video here on my channel that I believe is titled how to make a skull for under $2.00

Someone suggested to me to use boat paint or sealer to weather proof my props. Have you ever tried it??
@UnhingedProductions15 жыл бұрын
Nope, I’ve never spent the extra money for it./ I’m sure they would work great

What can I use in place of spar urethane? Finding it hard to buy in England
@lasviasirrah68885 жыл бұрын
Ah, you have just answered my question in the video, although I'm not keen on it having a rubbery texture.

I have made a multitude of groundbreakers and Standalone props, when it comes to weatherproofing I use the high gloss or semi-gloss Minwax spray polyurethane. I do probably three or four good coats of this plastic polyurethane and it seems to do a really good job keeping out the weather. I am like you I haven't found anything that is perfect yet but this seems to be doing a pretty decent job so far. Thank you for your videos I love what you do.

Thank you for this!! Have you ever tried using Plastidip to weatherize? I use it to waterproof the bottom of slippers I knit, but have no idea how it lays on smooth surfaces. It's half the price of flexi seal, doesn't smell horrible and comes in tons of colors...
@UnhingedProductions18 жыл бұрын
Nope I haven't given it a try... May have to.. the only thing I worry about is that it can be pulled off after it drys

Cosplayers frequently use Plastidip to seal EVA foam before painting. I don't know how well it would work as weatherproofing, but I don't see it peeling off. One of the upsides of plastidip for a cosplayer is it has some give when the foam moves.
@ErikIsaksen7 жыл бұрын
titebond 3 works great but still requires spar varnish just to be sure (IMO)
@ErikIsaksen7 жыл бұрын
I was happy to find Home Depot & walmart carries Plastidip (tar aerosol) pretty cheap (which is great for eva foam I hear). I tested this on our paper mache alien pieces and found it was ok w/ detail but I found enamel exterior paint & spar varnish worked better for me

also the glue if can't afford that what other glue would you say for out side use or maybe useing plaster of Paris
@UnhingedProductions18 жыл бұрын
Any type of wood glue will help with the fight against the weather. I just use and recommend tightbond II because I have had great luck with it. I'm sure you could use plaster of Pairs but I haven't tried it.

I use Spar Urethane 'semi-gloss' on all of my pumpkins. When I finish with the clay (and it is dry), I urethane both inside and outside of my pumpkins a minimum of '3' coats 'before' a drop of paint ever touches the pumpkin. I then put a 4th coat on both the inside and outside bottom of the pumpkins. Then I will paint the base coat color, and seal the base color with the spar urethane for an additional 2 coats (inside and outside of the pumpkin) and then I do whatever dry-brushing needs to be done. Once the dry-brushing is complete, I do an additional 3 coats on the inside and out, and of course, a 4th coat again on the inside and outside 'bottoms.' (The urethane between the base coat and dry-brushing insures that 'if' I mess up while dry-brushing, I can just wipe it clean without messing up the base coat.) This is only my 7th year of doing this, but all of my pumpkins are all still as fresh as the day they were completed. P.S. -- I also 'sign' all of my pumpkins on the bottoms, right after the first finishing coat of the urethane on the outside so that my signature is protected by at least 2 coats of the urethane once completed... so all together, my pumpkins have roughly 8 to 9 coats of urethane on them once completed.

Nice work. Traditionally, latex (water-based) paints will not adhere to oil based products (like the Minwax Helmsman). Minwax does make a water-based sealer (it comes in gloss and satin), and I wonder if you would have better luck with using latex paint over that (the satin would probably be the better choice)? I personally prefer the ease of latex paints for application, clean-up, drying time, and price. I assume you would want to then finish with the Helmsman. I have also been personally experimenting with a heat gun and plastic wrap, followed by a layer of latex paint. No idea how long that will last though. Thanks for the videos, they're appreciated!
@UnhingedProductions18 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the videos. I have also done the plastic and heat gun, it will last quite a while. So since I filmed this video I have done quite a few projects where I have sealed the raw mache with a spare urethane, then hit it with a primer and finally applied a finish paint. So far it was worked well. Latex paints are by far much easier to work with, I totally agree, but I do believe you need something stronger for a true final weather sealing coat. Thank you for taking the time to comment, hope to see your comments in some other videos as well.
