I show you how to make a rattan weave! Arts, crafts, home decor, and weaving with wood all in one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Drew Scott / Lone fox Collab video: • DIY URBAN OUTFITTERS R...
What up! So today I'm going to show you how to make this rattan weave lil thing. Then I use the same techniques to make this wood weave picture overlay.
First a huge thanks to Drew Scott/Lone fox for helping me with the Collab. ( He was the brains behind the collab) I'll show you how to make the rattan weave sheet, and he is going to show you what to do with them🙌🏻
First take an old picture frame. You will be drilling holes in it that are the same size or a lil bit bigger than 3/4''. You'll be using dowels that are 3/4" to hold the reed in place. (later in the video I show you how to weave using scotch tape instead of holes... so that is an option too)
I made the holes in the frame 1" apart and the reed was 1/4" wide.. that made the holes in the wave 3/4"... so the math there is what ever size you want the hole to be.. add the width of the reed to that, and the number you get is how far apart you should make your holes (how far apart each reed is in the weave). Hopefully that makes sense...
I then cut the dowels into 1.5" pieces.. and to help them go into the holes I tapped on side of it (did that with the pencil sharpener).
So to begin the rattan weave you will want to soak your reed in water for like 5-10 minutes--That will help the reed bend with out breaking...
Start by making horizontal--horizontal meaning left to right--lines with the reed going from hole to hole. Then make vertical stripes over the top of the horizontal ones. Then you will make another layer of horizontal ones that go over the top of Both of those.
On that third layer... its going horizontal like the first layer.. but you don't want it to lie directly on top. Make sure they are all on one side (upper or lower side). I put mine on the side that is closer to me (lower side).
Once those are done you will be doin a 4th layer that is vertical. again make sure they are all on either the right or left side of the other vertical layer of reed strips ( I put mine on the left). This is were you will do the first weaving part.
Do the opposite of the lower vertical strip. In my case the lower strips were first under then over the horizontal reeds... So on the new vertical reed it was first over then under... and you continued that pattern.
Next you will make the diagonal lines. Pick a corner and you will be weaving over the two horizontal reeds and under the two vertical ones. I started on the top left and worked my way down in a zig zag type pattern.. over under over under...
You continue that until you have all the diagonal weaves done ( a good way to check that is to see if the lil circles/square spaces have the top right corner and bottom left corner covered by the diagonal reads.
You'll then do the opposite diagonal line. You'll be doing the same thing only switch... so if you were going over the two horizontal reeds you will now be going under and same goes for the two vertical reeds...
On mine I start on the bottom left.. it doesn't really matter where you start, It was just easiest for me to start in a corner...
This diagonal reed should cover the two corners on the square that are still open..
once you are all done... because we are just cutting it out of the loom and not weaving it to a chair.. add some type of glue (I used super glue) to the edge weaves so it will stay together.
once the glue dries... You can cut it out:)
So I got 1000 ft reed off of amazon and made about 1,400 square inches of the weave... so if my math is right. with every foot of reed you can make 1.4 square inch of reed.
So.. if you just want one 20" x 24" sheet.. You'll need like 350 feet of reed.
Here is the link to the reed I got off amazon:
265 feet of reed: amzn.to/2mKL7Ha
1000 feet of reed: amzn.to/2mLnLkQ

Me too! It honestly makes the process more interesting to watch. I love seeing how trial & error shapes the final project. It’s nice to see some one make amazing art & know they don’t get it right every time. I know it helps me take more risks & now take failures so much to heart.

Pro tip from a fellow weaver: I've never worked with Aspen bark, but many weaving materials benefit from being dried completely first and then soaked until they become flexible again right before weaving. Some materials do fine if you weave them fresh, but many shrink or become brittle. Just figured I would share, since you've taught me so much- for instance, the effectiveness of super glue when dealing with baskets/weaves that will not cooperate, haha :) beautiful stuff, keep it up!

Dude! You totally should! I remember breaking a few as a kid and feeling SUPER bad because they cost a fortune to have re-caned for you, and of course the internet was in its infancy, so there weren’t nearly as many free learning resources! It’s a good thing the pattern is complex but not difficult or confusing. Just time consuming!

well, you made me more aware of how my neighbor do his job for furnitures (rocking chair, chairs, tables, beds, etc). I also see him pass the rattan through homemade holes in a metal sheet (similar to cheese grater) to make sure all of the lengths are same width and doesn't have splinters, also he taps the second rattan to make the gaps smaller and tighter. I believe he also swipe the rattan with candle wax to make the weaving easier and faster. I always see him working on old furnitures that need the rattan/reeds replaced and sometimes with new furnitures for his clients. nice vid.

Perfect collab-type man! There's a lot of creative collaborations out there at the moment but this kind is the BEST KIND! A true division of work and creativity came from both of you going into this project, and it's a fantastic outcome!

I always got my finger stuck in the ratan chairs and thus ended my love for this art form, it's a pretty craft to watch.

This is amazing. I love this design, but furniture with rattan is usually so expensive. Thank you for showing us how to make it yourself and in such a comprehensive and enjoyable way on top!

OMGOODNESS, Shmoxd. Young man, I LOVE everything about you. Don't worry, I live in Australia, and I am in my 70th year. I can dream. Lol. I love your daring, you dare to try anything, and your determination to see it through to the finish. I don't, so I just keep returning to watch one of your vids. Your young lady is beautiful as well as you being quite the looker. I know good things will come your way, you deserve them. Keep up with all the great art that you share with us, it is so appreciated. Makes me smile, and you cat. Hugs and more hugs to you all. Stay safe. Sherie Rodrigues from Australia. 😯
