A Dyson swarm is such a versatile megastructure. It's actually 3 megastructures in one. It can be a regular Dyson swarm (generates energy), it can be a star lifter. Star lifters reflect some energy back into the star to lift massive amounts of hydrogen and helium off the star to be processed into heavier elements through nuclear fusion. It's literally mining a star for near infinite resources and it prolong's the star's lifespan too. And lastly it can be a star laser. And there wouldn't be a whole lot of modification necessary to swap "modes".

The star laser is actually called Nicole-dyson beam

A dyson swarm is basically a better idea than a whole dyson sphere. A grid of satalites surrounding the star so that if anything hits them, it doesn't desroy the wholw thing.
@mxaa97766 ай бұрын
This is right for the wrong reason tbh, cuz on one hand sure, if an asteroid or smth hits one of the sattelites only the on it hit will be destroyed, but on the other hand a full sphere would be more durable, and could quite easily survive. The main reason why a swarm is better than a sphere is the cost. To make a swarm you could just mine like half of Mercury or something, but for a sphere we'd probably have to destroy multiple planets.

Isaac Arthur just released a similar video about space warfare and orbital defense platforms. He goees in depth and provides a juicier commentary on the subject, if you get the chance to watch.

Definitely second the Isaac Arthur suggestion, his videos are good deep dives into theoretical future tech and how they are theorized to function.

FTL Changes it all. Also, if they have high efficiency matter energy transmutation. Logistics become essentially infinite. Something that advanced will utterly smear us among the stars.
@mxaa97766 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how they could achieve M.E. transmutation at all but yea if they could we'd be dead. Also just a random thought: if their M.E. technology was advanced enough couldn't they theoretically just transmute the entire planet and instantly win the war?
@jeremygair40076 ай бұрын
@mxaa9776 I would think so but rate of transmutation would matter. It's like how nanite swarms dissolving everything into more nanites wouldnt necessarily be exponential in function. I think rate of replication matters but also, a limiting factor on speed could be heat dispersion for nanites.
