I appreciate videos like this. It’s great advice. I so don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to long form vids, and short form on KZbin is completely different than on tiktok. I’ve got tiktok figured out(for now.) I had a slump after they completely changed the way they monetize but I’m back in my flow again now with a more profitable RPM. I feel stuck on tiktok and tiktok feels unstable. I’m hoping this year to make time to really learn more about KZbin. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, man!

Hi Mort, have been enjoying your channel for 6 or so months. I enjoy your video game hunting episodes. I would be interested in a “Mort Plays” series where you review some of the games you have been playing the last month (maybe a video to use your great theme song). Wouldn’t mind seeing a video every now and then showing some of your collection. Looking forward to 2024 videos!!

Preach, Brother! You hit on a lot of the things I'm constantly thinking about. I'm trying to grow as a content creator every day...and it's a ton of work. I think we all have our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to making content. For example, I never have to script anything... I can just ramble off the cuff, and people seem to like it. However, I really struggle when it comes to coming up with enticing titles and thumbnails. Maybe I'll sign up for your patreon for some advice. I'm just worried that if I take too much advice, my content won't feel like ME anymore. And I don't want to lose that. It's my biggest asset.

Great video Mort. All of the points really hit. I think the big thing for us is continuing to find the drive. I enjoy making content but I have way more joy for just ignoring the world around me and hanging out in the basement with a good game. JRPG Life is definitely killing it right now and if I could go back in time we wouldn't be Retro Rivals because it's very vague yet at the same time very niche. I think they killed it right off the bat because JRPG is very searchable. Do you find SEO plays into getting views too? Tags? Just curious if you've put any time into analyzing that too? I will confirm that KZbin does cut you off after 50 characters. One of our last videos came out with a very crazy notification because of the title. It was hilarious. Thanks again for taking the time to help the community out. Appreciate you!

Man, I wish that saying something like "when I click on your channel, I'm not sure what I'm gonna get, vending, review, challenge etc" was not a "negative criticism" these days. I hate that the "algorithm" has started pushing everyone towards doing "One Thing" over and over--what happened to variety being a good thing? Isn't it *exciting* that a channel is versatile? I love that you don't just post the exact same kind of video over and over, myself! They're always so much fun because it's obvious that you care about it personally, and you're doing what you enjoy, and that's what matters. Anyway, can't wait to see what comes in the new year, Mort! Always so much fun to see what you have in store for us!

It's wild that in making this video you fall victim to exactly what you said about the feedback to your own channel about "scattershot" ...BUT! I LOVE when you do these kinds of videos. They keep me thinking about my own content and what goes into it. I've also had a video do significantly better as a result of changing a thumbnail and title - and Im pretty sure it was after your last video on this subject. It's SO important to be self-critical and to also be open to positive and corrective criticism. These videos are such a good chance to check-in with our own content and continue to grow as creators. YOU ROCK MORT!

As a newer KZbinr Mort, I thank you for this video. All of it makes plenty of sense. I would have to add another tip, use the trend to your benefit. My last video was an upgrade/update video to my game room. I happened to post it around the same time that everyone else was making game room videos for the end of the year/new year. This last video has taken off for me(at least for my small channel). I've added a lot of new subs and the views are still going. They're not as much now as it was but it's still going. As far as the switching of the thumbnail, I can't always get to a new video when it's posted. I actually find it frustrating when looking for a specific video only to find the video title and thumbnail was changed. I thought that it was a new video which was a semi-turnoff for me. Just my opinion.
@MortsGarage
@MortsGarage 6 ай бұрын
Glad you had success on the game room tour! I think it's an unfortunate downside of making content. We all work really hard to make something and hope it reaches as wide an audience as possible. If that means we have to change titles/thumbnails, then there it is...All the best to you in 2024!
@GameJunctionMedia

I agree with most of what you’ve said. TikTok is pushing 10 minute videos now, but they are not pushing it over their short form. Another thing is that during KZbin Summit ( I forgot the full title) KZbin confirmed doubling down on shorts. So just something to put out there. Long form content will always build a better community, and essentially KZbin Shorts is basically their own subscriber list. I just see them as a separate audience as they rarely transfer to long form, podcasts, and live streams. Thanks for the advice man!

Clickbaiting works but isn't the best strategy Your video with 60k views, I personally clicked on it because the title about reseller booths dying, it didn't really deliver on that title When you don't deliver what you said you see super fall off in viewer retention KZbin values viewer retention over over clicks Which is why your point about having a compelling story is true
@MortsGarage
@MortsGarage 6 ай бұрын
It’s a mixed bag for sure and part of playing the game. I don’t think the title was entirely off (here’s a video about video games - just kidding it’s about 12th grade chemistry!) but I welcome and appreciate the feedback. My typical retention hovers between 50-60% on regular vids. In general, retention dips the bigger a video goes. Regardless I appreciate you trying out the content.

You touched on it with a few of your points, but for years now I think my biggest gripe with KZbin is that because of the algorithm and discoverability in general, the more creators focus on growth, the more they need to begin creating content geared towards people who don't watch their channel yet over the people who are already subscribed. The unfortunate result of this a lot of times is the longer someone is subscribed to a creator, the less relevant their content is to you. This isn't necessarily a knock against a creator trying to grow their business, it's just a bittersweet reality of where the ecosystem is at.

I worry about the need to have a story ark. Look at the classic of MST3K. There are callbacks but there wasn’t a need to watch the series in a certain order. That is until Sci-Fi channel required them to make one. And when they did and Sci-Fi didn’t re-run them in order you felt lost. I feel that way with KZbin when I start playing something I shouldn’t need to go back to the channel, scroll up, hit select just to make sure KZbin is playing in the correct order at the end of each video.

I honestly hate all of the short formats. Any time one of my subscriptions post a new video I get super pumped to watch it, and if it ends up being a short, I honestly don’t even watch it. Like you said, I love creating videos where people put their time and effort into it. Maybe it’s also because of the fact that I also try to make a KZbin channel and just didn’t have the longevity to do so so when my favorite channels are putting out awesome videos, and it takes me out of my realm, it honestly gives me my entertainment that I really look forward to. I also live vicariously through a lot of you guys because I don’t get to go out to flea markets, hang out with a group of gaming friends, or expressed my love for the hobby on KZbin like you do. I definitely want to get my channel back up and running, but I don’t have the confidence honestly. And like all of you big KZbinrs say, all you need is the passion. I definitely agree with that, I just think I’m way too hard on myself.

Thanks for commenting - and many of us are unnecessarily, stiflingly critical of ourselves. ALL of our videos contain an error, a potentially taken out of context cringe moment, or something unless potentially unflattering. So what? The benefit of a format like youTube is unlike film/television, you don't have to wait a year for your next upload. You can get right to it again and apply changes, show growth. The goal I'd encourage you to set is to ask yourself what is one small but notable thing you can do in each video to improve? Watch Hayden Hillier Smith's editing podcast, a good film, a video on how to speak in front of a camera, or research a youtube video about your editing software to learn a new insight - then go apply it :) You got this!

Moe Szyslak would tell you that "garage" is too fancy and French sounding. Maybe people are expecting you to be a French man! Seriously though - when I think of Mort's Garage, I think of the guy with the complete boxed N64 collection. He also goes out there and finds deals and sets up a reseller table, and loves talking with people. One thing I love about Phoenix Resale is he talks a lot about the money he makes or loses - and what went right or wrong. That's what I'm interested in. I subscribed to your channel when you had people visit you in the garage, going through their collection with the intention of selling. I love seeing the condition of their games and systems. I guess I visit your channel to see what's happening in the world of selling and buying video games - and of course for your story telling. You're a fantastic writer.

My tiktok is growing and it's transferring into twitch and back to KZbin soon but you nailed a lot of good points. I'm also learning that a niche hobby like this provides growth but slow growth compared to people that make skits, narratives, and fiction in general. I'm enjoying it and getting my first payout from tiktok and being reached out by game developers is cool and was motivating. The gamecube gambit was a lesson. I unsubbed from his channel after that. The issue with Phoenix wasn't just the selling it was the shilling, timing and baiting. I saw him at a convention not long after that and seeing him beg to not pay entry fee because he had a big following was just sad. And seeing him lean into "hater hank" stuff and be the butt of jokes constantly from others in his own circle doesn't come off as funny but as self aware. Don't get me started on manipulative editing to sway opinions of what he's doing. But I wish you the best Mort. And I hope you find a flow and style that suits you and works out well.

As the serial commentor, you are 1000% right on all the things. I was lookimg back at my KZbin subscription history, and so many times Ive left just as the creator was no longer doing it for the passion. Not to drag Jirard into this but you know, the most hurtful thing was that he wanted to get out of the content creation and has been wanting to for a long time. It really hurt my heart because he really is that gamer but got wrapped up into the economics and the algorithm. I do hope that he eventually finds peace. Anyway back to you for a minute, my wife is a quick study of creators. And I think I probably watch one too many different channels, but the one thing that she always says when you come on, is how's the kids? Yeah she appreciates the editing, the music, but it's knowing the person on the other side. Lastly, before I get back to super Mario RPG by the way, really good takes me right back to the super Nintendo but with that Nintendo switch flair, anyway, is there a reason why you don't post your Instagram stories as KZbin shorts? Like keeping up with the latest of your reselling side seems to be over there, but I get the curated thematic story over here. Here. Does that make sense? Good or bad? It's just different.

First - I always love reading your comments. There’s a level of sincerity there that I appreciate. The concern over my family is realllly appreciated. We are great! I have a pretty flexible schedule which permits all the posting. You may notice I took a small gap in uploads to spend more time with the fam. And yes - I should post more reels with existing content on Instagram. But it’s in part a capacity thing. You may notice the podcast slowed down. We recorded a couple episodes that had technical glitches, so we weren’t able to use them. But I’ve also been too busy to keep up. Thanks for your support - I’ve never been as excited to make videos as I am now. There’s arguably more passion than ever. Thanks for being here since the beginning 👊

@@MortsGarage thank you but seriously thank you for allowing me to watch you grow. Then just how you have so pivoted to giving back, makes this government employee try to do the same here in DC. Nobody wants it, but everybody seems to appreciate it when you do it Sorry the diet Dr. Pepper started kicking back in again. What follows is a long flow thought. Like how you recognize Caleb, that dirty dirty reseller, and I agree that during the game cube collection series and then again on the switch series, it's like you did the thing. But then who were you at the end right? Cuz even I unsubscribed, but when he came on to your show and I got to know him better, I still check him out. Another KZbinr that was really hot this last year was girlfriend reviews. I know the two of them have been around for a little while but I really feel like collectively. They really cemented their audience this last couple of years with their art. And yeah they get crap all the time because he writes some of the scrapped and she's there and you know but they're willing to be themselves even in the humor in the jokes and the songs. They're just isn't anything else like that. If you are the DEVO, well they're the Andy dick and the b****** of the century. And you know what my CD player has room for both of you.

And I’m thankful for that. But let it be known that every human has rough edges. I e come to believe wholeheartedly in the idea of a redemptive culture - to quote a therapist friend: “Life is a cycle of rupture and repair”. The good ones seem to go on with the “repair” part.

@@MortsGarage thanks for the encouragement man. I think I am so used to making short form content, written review work and photography - it's been a bit of a struggle taking all of that experience and doing something with long form. If I ever do, I'll let you know. Keep up the amazing work man!

Hopefully some helpful comments. I am not a fan of shorts. I predominately watch gaming on the long version of youtube. But my shorts i am looking for more of a comedic flow. Even my favourite gaming youtube channels i will just skip past on shorts. I dont pay attention to thumb nails or titles of a video. I will always click on any content from my subscriber list and my favourite youtubers. Initially when i first find a channel i will subscibe only if the content grabs me. So they have to engage me within about 30 secs. I wont watch channels that are over the top or yell for hype. Sorry too long of a comment 😂

@@MortsGarage I mean we're glad that your doing well it's just the vast majority of us despise him. There's entire KZbin channels devoted to trying to get him shut down. He's a stain on this hobby and legitimately takes advantage of people in grotesque ways to try and earn a dollar.
