There’s an old saying that goes something like, “Success is when preparation meets opportunity.” In racing, it is commonly said that races are not won at the racetrack, but in the shop before the event.
In this jig-side chat, Tim gives you something to ponder about... What does it take to win? What are the common pitfalls that racers find themselves running into over and over again?
If you have a braindead or distracted driver and you are not prepared, you will not win unless it’s by accident.

I expect I won't race at the level he mentioned..... But his advice is the same regardless of level. Arrive at the track ready to race and focus on the task at hand. When I started foot brake racing my street car, I started watching what people who go rounds do. From the front gate to the starting line. It was an education you can't buy from a catalog.

I completely agree. Practice how you play. You have to take a systematic approach. We've emailed, aback and forth and you've motivated me with these videos. I also think preparing to win on race days includes being well rested and properly nourished and hydrated, too.

I don't run 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile, but I'm beyond glad my dad never stuck me in something like what I race today when we started racing 15 years ago. It took all that time working our way up to where we are and i never could believe how much I learned along away between how to drive and wrenching on the truck. 100% agree on preparation is everything, you have to go over your stuff or all the little stuff ends up biting you in the ass at the worst times. Great video Tim, enjoying all your content.

For me the years we have done better is when we are prepared and also get out there more. The more we go to the better we do. Not everyone is like Zizzo and can go out rarely and do well. But he does that because they are always working on that car

Tim years ago I crew chiefed a pro4 dirt car. We had a set of prep and scheduled checks and maintenance. On Monday after the race, the driver washed the with a blow dry and a light mist of wd40. Wednesday the entire crew gathered, looked over the whiteboard and each of us had specific jobs after we all checked 1/4 of the chassis for cracks. Every bolt was checked for tightness, oil changed, fill diff, fill trans, fill radiator, check lash on cam followers, check brakes. Everyone worked on everything on different weeks, fresh eyes an different view point. We won 13/16 features we entered. All in the prep. Only on real bad thrash on race day fixing wreck damage from the heat race!! We had so much more fun just being prepared to win!

There is a vast difference between those with $ that buy a car because they think racing is cool ( lasting only a year or two ) and those whom view racing as a process / business / problem to solve / goal to achieve. The year and out people do serve a function as this is where used cars come from.

I agree to a point because many people just have money and can afford the nice stuff but a guy like me has to do most of it by himself and if you don't have a name your not going to find a sponsor and that sucks because I've loved drag racing from the day I was born and I've gone after it but also with a family taking care of them first but a guy that has the Gift without the Money it's almost impossible but I'll tell you this if the Right One comes along I won't be beat believe that because I have every confidence in Myself and My Abilities and I Always have. People know me as EddieFast. I've seen Good Men Struggle and Never make it not because they couldn't because they didn't have the funding. I just wish we could go back to old school pro mod that would be the challenge and those with the money might as well sit home with that deal. I do like a TM car I just can't afford One. So I'm a do it yourself kinda guy but at 65 Year's Old it's getting a lot harder especially with a clutch car but at least I still got those adjustments. It's such a Shame a Gifted person can't Always show there Gifts but they All try and I support everyone of them

Expecting to win only applies once the car and driver have reached a certain level. I ran local oval track for a while and saw too many that were ill prepared expecting to win and get frustrated ( the tool throwers ). Some moved up a class " in order to go faster " then they still performed poorly.

Some of us don't need the pep talk. You have any idea how hard it is to run a competitive small tire car in the southeast nowadays? We have to be on top of everything at all times. It's harder to set up a 275 radial stock suspension car than one of these rockets.
