Hi Dan, depends. Generally yes - you can also try to have it on the rightj hand in case you need it as the right hand barly moves.

I noticed that the line was bending around the gate of the bolt snap, is it not likely that it will slip out? would it not be better to have the line bend around the solid part of the bolt snap jaw while spooling it in a horizontal position? Just wondering. I also noticed the trick or technique how you keep the line in tension when you are moving the clip forward in the horizontal direction you apply tension with the spool by pulling back. Very good learning video. Thank you. I also noticed how the line does not spool bag nicely is that not a big deal I guess if you have plenty of room in your spool.

Interesting demonstration. It is worth noting that you are introducing a twist into the line. Since the way you let the line out is different from the way you're bringing the line in, the line will eventually begin twisting around on itself.

I don't understand why it's a problem if as you say the SMB floats away. How can this be if you're holding the spool in your hand? You are still attached to it, the SMB is still marking your position. If you don't keep a downward pressure/tension on the SMB it will most likely lay flat on the surface and be difficult to see but it certainly won't float away. Also why do you say a straight line to the surface important? Of course there will be a straight line to the surface between you and the SMB. Unless as you say you let the line go slack when reeling it in by which ever method you use. I understand your horizontal method and is a very good idea and skill to learn.

Hi. I'm a very new diver, so I apologize for the silly question: When ascending to the surface, since both hands are occupied with the bolt snap and reel, how do you control your buoyancy. It seems that as the air in the BC expands, you would need a good bit of fancy hand work to control both the reel and the BC. FWIW, that seems to be the part of the puzzle that none of the DSMB videos really address. They all show how to shoot it from depth, but not how to control the BC while taking up the line during the ascent.

Hand off your spool to the right hand. Use your left hand to dump the wing. Will you have some slack? You might have some. Venting the suit and the wing is a procedure you will develop with practice. Can't say for everyone but I usually vent the suit a few times before I vent the wing.

I only do warm water rec diving with a big SMB. Works easy for me just to dump my bcd empty and pull myself up as I reel in the line. Works because I need minimal lift (only 1 alu tank and very little weights) and the SMB provides more than enough. Keeps the line nice and taut too. I can see plenty of reasons why this won't work in a situation with more weight such as cold water or tec gear.

If you're doing this as you ascend, are you able to maintain your rate of ascent? Are you stopping periodically to deflate your BC? If this is a dumb question, I apologize but I have not been diving in a very long time and want to get caught up with current procedures. Thanks.

Hi Rick, not a dump quetion at all! IN fact winding up the spool the way I demostrate makes a controlled ascent pretty easy. I have the spool in my left hand and that way I have good visuall access to my gauge - depth / time. so, wining up the spool give you a very stable acent speed and to be too fast you would have to win up pretty hard :-)

Would there be any benefit in wrapping the line once around the jaw of the double ender clip? That was it would not slip out and would force you to put backward tension with the spool in order to move clip forwards.

HI, in the beginning I did not understand what you mean - so I had to check the video again mysdelf :) I never expirience the line to slip through the gate but I think it runs more alomg the uper bow of the snap then in the gap of the slide. if you turn the clip arpound you need to twist it when you clip it back in the spool. So I dont think it is an issue as you have in in the hnad as well. if it becomes loose - you just clip it back in.

Get a spool in a case with finger holes for winding, you can rewind fast with enough tension to have a tight spool of line.....Commercial Saturation Diver

Thanks for the awesome series. Not sure if this question had been raised before. I started applying the method in your video, but after some time, the line starts to twist on itself. With each wind, you end up introducing a twist to the body of the line and over time it builds up. It’s the reason why in cable coiling there’s a in-n-out method to prevent this twisting. This would not be an issue in a reel though, any thoughts on this?

I get around this problem by flipping the reel every now and then and winding the other way, so every other metre has twists going the other way. This means when the line is next let out there's near zero total twist to the line.

Tom Payne, simple and smart. Gotta tell my instructor colleague whose reel is a kinked up mess :D Myself I used to spin the spool on my hand (since I just do rec safety stops at 5m, it's not too long to "reel in" on a spool), but I'll definitely learn the way you described
