Hi Chris, my spinning top had a leather cord, square cut, on a stick about a foot long. After getting the top spinning in the locker room, I would whip it with the cord to jump it over the mat and out the door to the playground, then keep it going all playtime by keeping on whipping it, jumping it over gutters or even up steps, then back in over the grating and the door mat into the locker room again. That was 70 years ago.❤

I'm 71 years old, and in school, we played a game with tops called cracksies. It was played with wooden tops, and we wound and threw the tops differently. The object of the game was to hit and hopefully slit the otherguys top. We didn't use a slow side throw. We threw them as hard as we could, almost straight down. They always went tip first. Oh, you couldn't use the bearing tiped tops.😊

We use to play tops in grade school,some 60 years ago,we played a game called spike the top,one person threw their wooden top down within a circle about 3 feet in diameter,the next person would try to knock the other person spinning top out of the circle, sometimes a direct hit would split a person's spinning top in half, what a fun game and a memory jogger.😊👍

My pops use to tell me all about that im 32 now and the memory of my pops telling me story's about how they use to play with big wooden tops such a cool and fun skill toy to play with especially now that the spin tops got super advanced my pops told me that back in the day they used nails as there tips it's crazy how things changed over the years

Thanks that helped a lot. I’ve bought the trompos mega pack with dvd and couldn’t figure it out as there are no verbal instructions. Looking forward for more instructional video as there not many around.

as a yoyoer the throw took me so long to get down, having to break the muscle memory from throwing it like a breakaway. i thought i would be able to do it right away. i was very wrong. lol

I throw my tops so weird lol, I basically have my index finger on the left side of the top (I’m a righty) middle finger on the top, and my middle and pinky are support on the right side. I just wrap the string around my index finger and it’s by far the most comfortable grip for me, I’ve always sucked at the upside down grip unless I’m throwing wooden tops or bigger tops

I have been looking for something like this since the internet came out! I had a wooden one back in the early '50s and wondered where one could find one now? To show my 5 YO granddaughter... and perhaps even my 30-ish grandsons or my 45-ish son for that matter.

Thanks man this brings me back to when I use to play with a spin tops before I started to play with yoyo's and kendamas lol I gotta order me a new spin top the one I had was sick it had a bearing on both the top and bottom tips so gyroscopic flops were super easy to do I miss playing with q spin top I could throw it and fly it back into my hand it was such a fun time I was 12 at the time im 32 now and literally about to order one do you have any good recommendations on which spin tops are good im looking for something not too expensive but not too cheap either lol been wanting to learn more string tricks with it as well and that's where the tops that have bearings in the tips come in handy sorry I wrote a long message this just got me excited like a little kid again lmao no joke

When I push I tend to get a very rough unravel of the string. What do I need to make it smoother?
@ChrisNeff2 жыл бұрын
There's lots of things that could be going wrong, but fundamentally the string needs to stay at 90° to the axis of the spin top while it is unwinding. In other words if the tip is kind of pointing back towards the string it will unravel. Concentrate on a release at the end of your throw not during the throat I'm trying to do it as slow as possible

What is the optimal length of string to spin a top? 😊
@ChrisNeff Жыл бұрын
It depends on the style, size, and weight of the spin top and the thickness of the string, but basically the winding of string should stop roughly at the center of mass.

Either the string is too long or you are releasing it with the tip pointing out instead of up

Can you scoop the wooden ones? When I try, it just stops spinning
@ChrisNeff3 жыл бұрын
Dry hands help. If the wood ones you are using have a high gloss finish and your hands are even remotely tacky it will grab and stop spinning pretty quick.
@rac-qb4dt3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisNeff I tried the talc thing you mentioned, but I still haven't gotten it working, maybe if I sand off the finish?
@ChrisNeff3 жыл бұрын
@@rac-qb4dt well that might help, maybe try something more like a sudden pop up than a scoop. In other words, put your fingers on either side of the tip and pop it up in the air real quick and then catch it in your hand... maybe?
